It is well-known that the presence of NOM (natural organic matter) in water has a negative effect on removing taste and odor compounds by activated carbon adsorption. Therefore, various means such as enhanced coagulation are applied to reduce the NOM. The presence of taste & odor compounds in drinking water even parts per trillion, is enough to generate customer dissatisfaction. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate carbon usage rate (CUR) for conventional coagulation (CC) and enhanced coagulation (EC) in order to improve the efficiency of adsorption of taste and odor compounds. Also, Effect of CC and EC on molecular weight fraction and the early stage breakthrough of 2-MIB and Geosmin are evaluated. When the enhanced coagulation was adapted for pretreatment for activated carbon adsorption the operation period could be prolonged by 3.5~4 times. CUR for CC was about 2 times greater than CUR for EC and this means that EC has more adsorption capacity than CC. To analyze effect of EC and CC on breakthrough of 2-MIB quantitatively, adsorbed NOM mass was calculated based on unit mass of activated carbon. In the early stage breakthrough of 2-MIB, total adsorbed NOM was 23.72mg/g for CC and 34.56mg/g for EC. Therefore, it is shown that the early breakthrough term of 2-MIB and Geosmin was improved due to increased adsorbability. The low-molecular-weight NOM (500~2000Da) compounds were the most competitive, participating in direct competition with 2-MIB for adsorption site.

Electroless nickel plating on porous carbon substrate was investigated. The pore sizes of carbon substrates were 16-20 ${\mu}m$ and over 20 ${\mu}m$. The carbon surface was changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic after immersing the substrate in an ammonia solution for 40 min at $60^{\circ}C$. The contact angle of water was decreased from $85^{\circ}$ to less than $20^{\circ}$ after ammonia pretreatment. The content of phosphorous in nickel deposit was decreased with increasing pH and then deposits became crystallized. The thickness of nickel deposit was increased with increasing pH. The minimum concentration of $PdCl_2$ for the electroless nickel plating was 5 ppm and the thickness of nickel was not significantly affected by the concentration of $PdCl_2$.

Electroless nickel plating on porous carbon substrate for the application of MCFC electrodes was investigated. Acidic and alkaline bath were used for the electroless nickel plating. The pore sizes of carbon substrates were 16-20 ${\mu}m$ and over 20 ${\mu}m$. The carbon surface was changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic after immersing the substrate in an ammonia solution for 40 min at $60^{\circ}C$. The contact angle of water was decreased from $85^{\circ}C$ to less than $20^{\circ}$ after ammonia pretreatment. The deposition rate in the alkaline bath was higher than that in the acidic bath. The deposition rate was increased with increasing pH in both acidic and alkaline bath. The content of phosphorous in nickel deposit was decreased with increasing pH in both acidic and alkaline bath. The contents of phosphorous is low in alkaline bath. The minimum concentration of $PdCl_2$ for the electroless nickel plating was 10 ppm in alkaline bath and 5 ppm in acidic bath. The thickness of nickel was not affected by the concentration of $PdCl_2$.
Lots of pollutants typically originating from urban transportation are accumulating on the paved surfaces during dry periods and are washed-off directly to the river during a storm. Also, paved surfaces are contributing to increase in peak flows and volume of stormwater flows. These are the main reasons why the water quality of rivers and lakes remain polluted and still below standards. Currently, several management practices are being applied in developed countries but the design standards are still lacking. This research was conducted to develop a treatment technology that can be useful to address the problems concerning runoff quality and quantity. A lab scale infiltration device consisting of a pretreatment tank and media zone was designed and tested for various flow regimes characterizing the low, average and high intensity rainfall. Based on the experiments, the high intensity flow resulted to increase in outflow event mean concentration (EMC) of pollutants, about twice as much as the average outflow EMC. However, 78 to 88% of the total suspended solids were captured and retained in the pretreatment tank because of sedimentation. The removal of heavy metals such as zinc and lead was greatly affected by the vertical placement of woodchip layer prior to the media zone. It was observed that the high carbon content (almost 50%) in the woodchip provided opportunity for enhancing its uptake of metal by adsorption. The findings implied that the reduction of pollutants can be greatly achieved by means of proper pretreatment to allow for settling of particles with a combination of using high carbon source media like woodchip and a geotextile mat to reduce the flow before filtering into the media zone and finally discharging to the drainage system.
A pot and laboratory experiments were conducted to find out the effects of pretreatments of rice straw and silica fertilizer in submerged and upland soil condition on the evolution of nitrous oxide with different application time. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Evolution of nitrous oxide was remarkably increased with pretreatment of rice straw and silica in upland condition than that of submerged condition. 2. Effects of application time of rice straw and silica fertilizer on the evolution of nitrous oxide were high in order of two weeks before transplant > early spring (February) > late autumn (November) application. 3. The consumption ratio of carbon for the evolution of one mole nitrogen was pronounced more in submerged condition than that of pretreated in upland condition. Application of rice straw with silica fertilizer was remarkably reduced the consumpotion of carbon on the denitrification path way. 4. Amount of mineral nitrogen as $NH_4^+-N$, $NO_2^--N$, and $NO_3^--N$, and nitrification rate were remarkably high in pretreatment of rice straw and silica in upland condition than that of contineusly submerged soil condition.

In this study, high-density carbon blocks were manufactured using coke, binder pitch, and impregnated pitch, then the effect of pitch fluidity on the densification of carbon blocks during the impregnation process was investigated. A green block was manufactured through high-pressure figuration of coke and binder pitch, and a carbon block was obtained through a heat treatment process. An impregnation process was performed to remove pores generated by volatilization of the binder pitch during the heat treatment process. The impregnation process was carried out the high-pressure reaction step of impregnating the pitch into the carbon block followed by the pretreatment step of melting the impregnation pitch. Melting of the impregnation pitch was carried out at 140~200 ℃, and the viscosity of the impregnation pitch decreased as the heat treatment temperature increased. The decrease in the viscosity of the impregnation pitch improved the fluidity and effectively impregnated the pores inside the carbon block, reducing the porosity of the carbon block by 83% and increasing the apparent density by 5%.
In this study, to improve the low surface area of domestic anthracite as raw materials of activated carbon, characteristics on chemical activation and VOCs adsorption of activated carbon according to mixing ratio of anthracite and lignite. For these, properties of raw materials, parameter characteristics of preparation processes for activated carbon, and VOCs adsorption characteristic of the prepared activated carbon are analyzed. The experimental results showed that, the domestic anthracite had disadvantages of high contents for ash and lead, arsenic, which were exceeded for the heavy metal limits, in the properties of raw materials. To improve these diadvantages, using the mixing ratio of anthracite and lignite, and the optimum conditions for pretreatment, activation, washing, and pellitization process, the activated carbon had a range of BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area of $1,154{\sim}1,420m^2g^{-1}$ with mesopore development and hydrophobic surface property. The carbons were satisfied with the quality standard for granular activated carbon, and had similar physicochemical properties with the commercial activated carbon. The minimum mixing condition for commercial VOCs activated carbon performance must have the caloric value of above $5,640kcal\;kg^{-1}$, and the carbon had higher adsorption capacity with order of xylene > toluene > benzene according to more higher molcular weight and hydrophobic property.
$TiO_2$-coated bamboo activated carbon has been prepared and utilized under UV irradiation as a pretreatment method for an effective biodegradation of the recalcitrant polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The anatase $TiO_2$ was successfully coated on the bamboo activated carbon (AC) and it showed the highest photoactivity against methylene blue. In the absence of the PAHs-degrading bacteria PAHs having low molecular weight (i.e., naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, and fluorene) were degraded by 9.8, 76.2, 74.1, and 40.5%, respectively. Higher molecular weight PAHs, however, maintained high residual concentrations of PAHs (400-1,000 ${\mu}g$/L) after the same treatment. On the other hand, the overall concentrations of PAHs became lower than 340 ${\mu}g$/L when the pretreated PAHs were subjected to biodegradation by a PAH-degrading consortium for a week. Herein, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, and pyrene were removed by 29.3, 61.4, 27.0, and 44.3%, respectively, indicating the facilitated potential biodegradation of PAHs. Activated carbon coated with $TiO_2$ appeared to inhibit growth of PAH degraders on the surface of AC, indicating planktonic degraders were dominantly involved in the PAH biodegradation in presence of the $TiO_2$-coated bamboo AC. It was proposed that an effective remediation technology for the recalcitrant PAHs could be developed when an optimum pretreatment process is further established.

In this study, effect of carbon source on the hydrolytic ability of the enzyme from Fomitopsis pinicola, a brown rot fungi, for lignocellulosic biomass were examined on two lignocellulosic biomasses (rice straw and wood) without any pretreatment. Cellulase activities of crude enzyme from F. pinicola, which was cultured on softwood mixture as a carbon source, were 19.10 U/$m{\ell}$ for endo-${\beta}$-1,4-gulcanase (EG), 36.1 U/$m{\ell}$ for ${\beta}$-glucosidase (BGL), 7.27 U/$m{\ell}$ for cellobiohydrolase (CBH), and 7.12 U/$m{\ell}$ for ${\beta}$-1,4 xylosidase (BXL). Softwood mixture as a carbon source in F. pinicola comparatively enhanced cellulase activities than rice straw. The optimal pH and temperature of the cellulase was identified to pH 5 and $50^{\circ}C$for the hydrolysis of rice straw. Under these condition rice straw was hydrolyzed to glucose by the cellulase up to $32.0{\pm}3.1%$ based on the glucan amount of the rice straw for 72 h, while the hydrolytic capability of commercial enzyme (Celluclast 1.5${\ell}$) from rice straw to glucose was estimated to $53.7{\pm}4.7%$ at the same experimental condition. In case of addition of Tween 20 (0.1% w/w, substrate) to the cellulase the hydrolysis of rice straw to glucose was enhanced to $38.1{\pm}2.0%$.

As flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater contains high concentrations of nitrate and is very low in organic carbon, the feasibility of nitrate removal by autotrophic denitrification using Thiobacillus denitrificans was studied. This autotrophic bacteria oxidizes elemental sulfur to sulfate while reducing nitrate to elemental nitrogen gas, thereby eliminating the need for addition of organic compounds such as methanol. Owing to the unusually high concentrations of dissolved salts $(Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+},\;Na^+,\;K^+,\;B^+,\;SO_4^{2-},\;Cl^-,\;F^-,)$ in the FGD wastewater, extensive laboratory-scale and pilot-scale tests were carried out in sulfur-limestone reactors (1) to determine the effect of salinity on autotrophic denitrification, (2) to evaluate the use of limestone for pH control and as source of inorganic carbon for microbial growth, and, (3) to find the optimum environmental and operational conditions for autotrophic denitrification of FGD wastewater. The experimental results demonstrated that (1) autotrophic denitrification is not inhibited up to 1.8 mol total dissolved salt content; (2) inorganic carbon and inorganic phosphorus must be present in sufficiently high concentrations; (3) limestone can supply effective buffering capacity and inorganic carbon; (4) the high calcium concentration may interfere with pH control, phosphorus solubility and limestone dissolution, hence requiring pretreatment of the FGD wastewater; and, 5) under optimum conditions, complete autotrophic denitrification of FGD wastewater was obtained in a sulfur-limestone packed bed reactor with a sulfur:limestone volume ratio of 2:1 for volumetric loading rates up to 400g $NO_{3^-}N/m^3.d$. The interesting interactions between autotrophic denitrification, pH, alkalinity, and the unusually high calcium and boron content of the FGD wastewater are highlighted. The engineering significance of the results is discussed.
