  • The mesophase pitch was prepared by adding 1~10 wt% of the borane-pyridine complex (BPC) to decant oil. It was prepared in a reactor held at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in $N_2$ atmosphere. The mesophase pitches were analyzed using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), melting point apparatus, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and polarized optical microscope. The coke yield, softening point, toluene insoluble, density and content of anisotropy in the mesophase pitches were increased with BPC contents. The XRD profiles did not show any effect of addition of BPC on the formation of mesophase pitch, while the crystallinity of mesophase pitches was increased when the materials were heat treated with boron compound.

  • Ultraviolet spectrophotometric investigations have been carried out the systems of monoalkylbenzene with iodine in carbon tetrachloride. The results reveal the formation of one to one molecular complexes. The equilibrium constants for these complexes of representative monosubstituted benzene reveal the following order of increasing stability: benzene < methyl- < ethyl- < n-propyl-benzene. The value of ${\Delta}H$, ${\Delta}G$, and ${\Delta}S$ for interaction of a number of monoalkyl substituted benzene with iodine has been determinated. In general, as ΛH becomes increasingly negative, corresponding decreases in ${\Delta}G$ and ${\Delta}S$ values are observed, and these variation are linear. The thermodynamic constants become increasingly negative with increasing monoalkyl substitution of the aromatic donor nucleus. The complex bond is therefore weak, and its formation is accompanied by relatively small entropy changes.

  • Catalytic performance of Co catalysts supported on MgO for the formation of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) Having 40-60 nm in diameter has been investigated through acetylene decomposition at $600^{\circ}C$. Scanning electron microscopy measurements show that the nanotubes are chain and coiled structures whereas x-ray diffraction patterns indicate the formation of MWCNTs with Co nanoparticles. In addition Raman spectra confirms the format ion of MWCNTs due to presence of characteristic radial breathing mode along with D and G bands.

  • This study investigates the effects of a carbon fiber layer formed on the surface of an etched aluminum current collector on the electrochemical properties of the activated carbon electrodes for an electric double layer capacitor. A particle size analyzer, field-emission SEM, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm analyzer are employed to analyze the structure of the carbon fiber layer. The electric and electrochemical properties of the activated carbon electrodes using a carbon fiber layer are evaluated using an electrode resistance meter and a charge-discharge tester, respectively. To uniformly coat the surface with carbon fiber, we applied a planetary mill process, adjusted the particle size, and prepared the carbon paste by dispersing in a binder. Subsequently, the carbon paste was coated on the surface of the etched aluminum current collector to form the carbon under layer, after which an activated carbon slurry was coated to form the electrodes. Based on the results, the interface resistance of the EDLC cell made of the current collector with the carbon fiber layer was reduced compared to the cell using the pristine current collector. The interfacial resistance decreased from 0.0143 Ω·cm2 to a maximum of 0.0077 Ω·cm2. And degradation reactions of the activated carbon electrodes are suppressed in the 3.3 V floating test. We infer that it is because the improved electric network of the carbon fiber layer coated on the current collector surface enhanced the electron collection and interfacial diffusion while protecting the surface of the cathode etched aluminum; thereby suppressing the formation of Al-F compounds.

  • The components of an aero-engine gas path cannot be monitored in a timely way due to a lack of real-time monitoring technologies. As an attempt to address this problem, we have conducted research on a condition monitoring technology based on the charging characteristics of particles in an aero-engine gas path, and emphatically analyze the formation of particles in an aero-engine gas path, the charging mechanism of carbon particles and the factors that influence the charge quantity and polarity. The verification experiments are performed on the simulated experiment platform and a turbo-shaft engine test bench. The results show the carbon particles' carry charge, and an obvious change in the total electrostatic charge level in the aero-engine gas path due to the increased carbon particles produced by burning or abnormal metal particles; the charge number is related to the size of particles, and the bigger carbon particles carry a negative charge and metal particles carry a positive charge; the change in engine power can lead to an obvious change in the level of electrostatic charge in the gas path, and the change in electrostatic charge results from the extra carbon particles formed in the rich-oil burning process. The research provides a reference for establishing the baseline of electrostatic charge while the engine runs on different power. The study also demonstrates the validity of the electrostatic monitoring technology and establishes a base for developing the application of electrostatic monitoring technology in aero-engines.

  • It was the first time the MgO-C brick was developed for the lining materials in the hot spots in electric are furnace in 1972. MgO-C brick is high registant to thermal and structural spalling. Futhermore for the reason that carbon is hard to react with slag and MgO is high fireproof MgO-C brick shows a high corrosion registance to slag attack compared with conventional basic refractories. Owing to their excellent properties the use of MgO-C refractories are being developed widely in the field of shaped refractories and even in that of monolithic refractories. In this paper the oxidation of carbon the infiltration of slag into the brick texture and effects of additions were investigated. The results obtained were as follows : 1) The use of fused MgO-clinker and high purity carbon as raw materials increased the corosion registance and hot modulus of rupture of MgO-C brick. 2) As the oxidation reaction of the carbon proceeded the slag infiltrated into the brick texture. And then the slag components reacted with the MgO grains and formed low melting point compounds particulary CaO.MgO.$SiO_2$ and 3CaO.MgO.$2SiO_2$ that resulted in the wear of the brick. 3) It is recongnized the Al, Si, $B_3C$ effects on the oxidation registant properties of MgO-C brick by contribu-ting to the decrease of permeability according to the formation of $Al_4C_3$, SiC, $B_2O_3$ and the decrease of open pores relating to the formation of MgO.Al2O3, $SiO_2$, 3MgO.$B_2O_3$ at the decarbonized layer.

  • In this study, we have analyzed relationship between the measured Water Soluble Organic Carbon (WSOC) concentrations and the estimated aerosol water content of $PM_{10}$ (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than or equal to $10{\mu}m$) for the period between September 2006 and August 2007 at Seoul, Korea. Water content of $PM_{10}$ was estimated by using a gas/particle equilibrium model, Simulating composition of Atmospheric Particles at Equilibrium 2 (SCAPE2). The WSOC concentrations showed low correlation with Elemental Carbon (EC), but Water Insoluble Organic Carbon (WISOC) were highly correlated with EC. It seemed that hydrophilic groups were produced by secondary formation rather than primary formation. As with the previous studies, WSOC showed good correlation with secondary ions ($NO_3{^-}$, $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NH_4{^+}$), especially WSOC was highly correlated with $NO_3{^-}$ that is a secondary ion formed by photochemical oxidation from more local sources than $SO_4{^{2-}}$. No apparent correlation between the measured WSOC and estimated water content was observed. However, WSOC showed good correlation with estimated water content when it was assumed that relative humidity was higher than the deliquescence relative humidity of the system. In conclusion, WSOC is correlated with water content by hygroscopic ions and it is expected that nitrate play an important role among the water content and WSOC.

  • Phase mixtures of Titanium boride, nitride, and carbide powder were produced by the reduction of a mixture of titanium and boron oxides with carbon via a gas-solid phase reaction. Boron oxides produce a vapour phase or decompose to a metal sub-oxide gaseous species when reduced at elevated temperature. The mechanism of BO sub-oxide gas formation from $B_2O_3$ and its subsequent reduction to titanium diboride for the production of uniform size hexagonal platelets is explained. These gaseous phases are critical for the formation of boride, nitride and carbide ceramics. For the production of ceramic phase composite microstructures, the nitrogen partial pressure was the most critical factor. Some calculated equilibrium phase fields has been verified experimentally. The theoretical approach therefore identifies conditions for the formation of phase mixtures. The thermodynamic and kinetic factors that govern the phase constituents are also discussed.

  • A surface hardenable low alloy carbon steel was implanted with medium energy (20 - 50KeV) $N_2^+$ ions to produced a modified hardened surface. The implantation conditions were varied and are given in several doses. The surface hardness of treated and untreated steels were measured using depth sensing ultra micro indentation system (UMIS). It is shown that the hardness of nitrogen ion implanted steels varied from 20 to 50GPa depending on the implantation conditions and the doses of implantation. The structure of the modified surfaces was examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the high hardness on the implanted surfaces was as a result of formation of non-equilibrium nitrides. High-resolution XPS studies indicated that the nitride formers were essentially C and Si from the alloy steel. The result suggests that the ion implantation provided the conditions for a preferential formation of C and Si nitrides. The combination of evidences from nano-indentation and XPS, provided a strong evidence for the existence of $sp^3$ type of bonding in a suspected $(C,Si)_xN_y$ stoichiometry. The formation of ultra hard surface from relatively cheap low alloy steel has significant implication for wear resistance implanted low alloy steels.

  • A comprehensive fractionation technique was applied to a set of water samples obtained along drinking water treatment process with ozonation and biological activated carbon (BAC) process to obtain detailed profiles of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and to evaluate the haloacetic acid (HAA) formation potentials of these DOM fractions. The results indicated that coagulation-sedimentation-sand filtration treatment showed limited ability to remove hydrophilic fraction (28%), while removal of hydrophobic and transphilic fraction were 57% and 40%, respectively. And ozonation and BAC treatment showed limited ability to remove hydrophobic fractions (6%), while removal of hydrophilic and transphilic fractions were 25% and 18%. The haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP)/dissolved organic carbon (DOC) of hydrophilic fraction was the highest along the treatment train and HAAFP/DOC of hydrophilic fraction was higher than hydrophobic and transphilic fraction as 23%~30%, because of better removal for hydrophobic fraction both in concentration and reactivity.
