  • Many therapeutic class drugs such as beta-blocker, corticosteroids, NSAIDs, etc are prohibited substances in the horse racing industry. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technology makes it possible to isolate drugs from interference, enables various drug analyses in complex biological samples due to its sensitive sensitivity, and has been successfully applied to doping control. In this paper, we describe a rapid and sensitive method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) using solid phase cartridge and LC-MS/MS to screen for different class's 35 drug targets in equine plasma. Plasma samples were pretreated by SPE with the NEXUS cartridge consisted non-polar carbon resin and minimum buffer solvent. Chromatographic separation of the analytes was performed on ACQUITY HSS C18 column (2.1 × 150 mm, 1.8 ㎛). The elution gradient was conducted with 5 mM ammonium formate (pH 3.0) in distilled water and 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile at a flow rate of 0.25 mL/min. The selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode was used for drug screening with multiple transitions in the positive ionization mode. The specificity, limit of detection, recovery, and stability was evaluated for validation. The method was found to be sensitive and reproducible for drug screening. The method was applied to plasma sample analysis for the proficiency test from the Association of Racing Chemist.

  • Various inorganic alignment layers of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) molecules were investigated. Ar ion beam (IB) irradiation was utilized for alignment method and homogenous and homeotropic orientations with tilt angle were obtained on the suitable inorganic thin films. Proper doping materials were added to diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. In the case of homogeneous alignment, nitrogen doping affected the increase of pretilt angle, while the fluorine bonding in the DLC films was induced the tilted homeotropic alignment cause its extreme hydrophobic property. These results showed that ion beam irradiation method could be applied to the various alignment mode of NLC such as IPS, TN and MVA.

  • We have examined the effect of ball-milling on the superconducting properties of $MgB_2$ doped with C. The ball-milling of pre-reacted $MgB_2$ powder was carried out in dry or wet state using C or diethylenetriamine ($C_{4}H_{13}N_3$) as additives. The diethylenetriamine, whose chemical formula contains no oxygen, was chosen to avoid an excess oxidation during doping. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of the ball-milled or doped $MgB_2$ powders was only slightly smaller than that of undoped $MgB_2$. The critical current density (Jc) of the highly ball-milled $MgB_2$ was higher than that of C-doped $MgB_2$. The addition of diethylenetriamine was detrimental to Jc, although Tc was almost unchanged.

  • Bundles of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNTs) were grown using catalytic layer supported by self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Amine-SAMs were introduced on SiO2/Si substrate (SAMs/Si) there then iron nanoclusters solution was dropped on it through spin-coating (Fe/SAMs/Si). This catalytic template was used to grow CNTs and the synthesized carbon material was confirmed the bundles of dense SWCNTs with incorporation of ca.1% nitrogen. The SAMs has played an active role to support catalytic layer and also acted as a source of N-dope onto SWCNTs in CVD.

  • A simple preparation method on creating superhydrophobic surface using non-aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was demonstrated. Superhydrophobic CNT thin films were prepared by doping a sonicated mixture of CNTs and chloroform onto a glass slide. Water contact angles of the CNT thin films were measured using a contact angle goniometer. The thin films were characterized using laser microscope and scanning electron microscope. Experimental results revealed that the highest average contact angle of $162{\pm}2^{\circ}$ was achieved when the films' thickness was $1.628{\mu}m$. The superhydrophobic surface was stable as the contact angle only receded from $162{\pm}2$ to $157{\pm}2^{\circ}$ after 10 min under normal atmospheric condition.

  • In order to elucidate the crystallographic orientation dependence of electrical properties of carbon (C)-doped GaAs epilayers, C incorporation into GaAs epilayers on high-index GaAs substrates with various crystallographic orientations from (100) to (111)A has been performed by a low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition using C tetrabromide ($CBt_4$) as a C source. The hole concentration of C-doped GaAs epilayers rapidly decreases with a hump at (311)A with increasing the offset angle. Although the growth temperature and the V/III ratio are varied, the crystallographic orientation dependence of hole concentration show a same trend. The above behaviors indicate that the bonding strength of As sites on a glowing surface plays an important role in the C incorporation into the high-index GaAs substrates.

  • Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) can be modified to produce a new concept of hybrid materials by introducing atoms or molecules inside their cylindrical empty space. Such an endohedral doping of the SWCNTs is expected to decisively alter their electronic transport and mechanical properties, In this study, we purified SWCNTs by three-step purification processes and formed the peapod structure by introducing $C_{60}$ fullerenes inside the SWCNTs. $C_{60}$ molecules were observed to be regularly arranged by transmission electron microscopy. In Raman spectra, the radial breathing mode (RBM) rather than the other modes was significantly affected by the endohedral injection of $C_{60}$. The RBM intensity was more greatly reduced in the large-diameter SWCNTs than the small-diameter ones, Raman spectroscopy is expected to be a key technique for analyzing $C_{60}$-encapsulated SWCNTs.

  • We have fabricated twisted nematic (TN) cell doped by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNTs with a minute amount of doping do not perturb the liquid crystal orientation in the off- and on-state. The hysteresis studies of voltage-dependent transmittance and capacitance under ac and dc electric field show that the amount of residual dc, which is related to image sticking problem in liquid crystal displays, is greatly reduced due to ion trapping by CNTs.

  • The oxidation of carbon monoxide has been investigated on Ni-doped ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ catalyst at 300 to $450^{\circ}$. The oxidation rates have been correlated with 1.5-order kinetics; first with respect to CO and 1/2 with respect to $O_2$. Carbon monoxide is adsorbed on lattice oxygen of Ni-doped ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$, while oxygen appears to be adsorbed on oxygen vacancy formed by Ni-doping. The conductivities show that adsorption of CO on O-lattice produces conduction electron and adsorption of $O_2$ on O-vacancy withdraws the conduction electron from vacancy. The adsorption process of CO on O-lattice is rate-determining step and dominant defect of Ni-doped ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ is suggested from the agreement between kinetic and conductivity data.

  • In this paper, cobalt embedded in nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon nanotubes (CoNSTs) were synthesized for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. The CoNSTs were prepared through a facile heat treatment method without any templates. Different amounts of the metal salt were employed to examine the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the CoNSTs. The CoNSTs showed the bamboo-like tube morphology with the encased Co nanoparticles in the tubes. Through the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, the catalysts exhibited different chemical states of the nitrogen and sulfur species. As a result, the CoNST performed high activity toward the ORR in an acidic condition with the onset potential of 0.863 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). It was clearly demonstrated from the electrochemical characterizations that the quality of the nitrogen and sulfur species significantly influences the ORR activity rather than the total amount of the dopants.
