Additive Effect in the Preparation of Carbon-slurry Fuel (Carbon-slurry 연료의 제조에 있어서 첨가제의 효과)

  • Preparation and characterization of carbon-slurry fuel with high dispersion have been carried out. Carbon-slurry fuel was obtained by mixing Jet A-1 liquid fuel with appropriate carbon powders and additives. Dispersion of carbon in Jet A-1 was affected by various factors such as mixing temperature, characteristics of carbon powders, and type and amount of additives. Among these factors, the stability of the slurry fuel was most dependent on the type of additive. A variety of additives such as anionic, cationic, and nonionic additives was tested for the dispersion of carbon in Jet A-1. It was found that anionic additives based on sodium salts showed the highest dispersion of carbon-slurry fuels. The degree of dispersion could be monitored by measuring the luminosity.

  • The effect of chemical additives, such as dimethyl ether(DME), ethanol, carbon disulfide on the soot formation were examined numerically. ill this study, the Frenklach soot mechanism was used as a base mechanism to predict the soot formation in the ethane flame. The combination of Westbrook's DME mechanism, Marinov's ethanol mechanism, and chemical kinetic mechanism for hydrogen sulfide and carbon disulfide flames was made with the base mechanism because the DME, ethanol, $CS_2$ additives are added into the ethane fuel. CHEMKIN code was used as a numerical analysis software to simulate the effect of chemical additives on reduction of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH's) which are soot precursors. From the numerical results it is observed that addition of DME, ethanol and $CS_2$ into ethane fuel can reduce PAH species significantly. That means theses additives can reduce soot formation significantly. Results also strongly suggest suppression of soot formation by these additives to be mainly a chemical effect. Hand OH radicals may be the key species to the reduction of PAH species for additives.

  • Composite specimens, which are composed MDF cement of HAC-PVA system were prepared by adding carbon fiber, hydrated silica and SiC powder, and we studied effect of additives on the flexural strength of the composites. All of additives is effective in the improvement of flexural strength of the composite specimens. The size of average pore diameter in the specimens which have high flexural strength property was small. Specimen mixed with hydrated silica was effective in the particle compact property. Flexural strength of carbon fiber reinforced MDF cement composites were improved because of crack deflection of carbon fiber in cementitious matrix.

  • The particle size of synthesized SiC powders was decreased with increasing carbon content when the mixture of carbon and silica was carbonized at 1, 45$0^{\circ}C$ after hydrolysis of the mixture with the ranges of 3.1 to 3.5 in the mole ratio of Carbon/Alkoxide. The reacted fraction of $\beta$-SiC nearly had nothing to do with the mole ratio of Carbon/Alkoxide. When the reaction was made by adding 0.5wt% additives in the composition of 3.1 in the mole ratio of carbon/alkoxide, the additives decreased the yield of $\beta$-SiC and its sequence was Ba2O3>B>Fe>Al>Al2O3>Si. The effect of additives promoted the transformation of $\beta$-SiC to $\alpha$-SiC form and shwoed the increasing tendency of lattice constant. The two colors of $\beta$-SiC powder came out : one was the black grey with addition of Al, Al2O3 and B the other the light grey with addition of Fe, B2O3 and Si.

Study on Influence of Carbon Nanotubes and Alumina Additives to Lubrication and Wear Characteristics (카본 나노튜브 및 알루미나 첨가제가 윤활 및 마모특성에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구)

  • In this work, carbon nanotube and nano-size alumina particle are exploited as additive for lubrication experiment. We used pin-on-disk type tribometer to investigate the tribological characteristics of lubricants with respect to additives and rotational speed. We conducted more than 15 trials of tribotests for two hours for each specimen to obtain stable and accurate frictional force and to create measurable wear track on the substrate. We conducted tests at the boundary/mixed lubrication regime to evaluate the influence of additives on the tribological characteristics. We found that the friction coefficient decreased as the rotational speed increased and as additives were added. In particular, the reduction of friction by adding additives was more significant at low rotational speed than at high rotational speed. We speculate that the additives helped to separate and protect the two contacting surfaces at low speed, while the influence of additives was not significant at high speed since sufficiently thick lubricant film was formed. The wear of the substrate was also reduced by adding additives to the lubricant. However, in contrast to friction, the amount of wear at high rotational speed was less when alumina particles were added to the lubricant than the amount of wear at low speed. We speculate that the increased wear at low rotational speed is as a result of the intermittent abrasive wear caused by alumina particles with uneven shape, while the reduced wear at high speed is as a result of sufficient film thickness which prevented the abrasive wear.

Performance of modified graphite as anode material for lithium-ion secondary battery

  • Two different types of graphite, such as flake graphite (FG) and spherical graphite (SG), were used as anode materials for a lithium-ion secondary battery in order to investigate their electrochemical performance. The FG particles were prepared by pulverizing natural graphite with a planetary mill. The SG particles were treated by immersing them in acid solutions or mixing them with various carbon additives. With a longer milling time, the particle size of the FG decreased. Since smaller particles allow more exposure of the edge planes toward the electrolyte, it could be possible for the FG anodes with longer milling time to deliver high reversible capacity; however, their initial efficiency was found to have decreased. The initial efficiency of SG anodes with acid treatments was about 90%, showing an over 20% higher value than that of FG anodes. With acid treatment, the discharge rate capability and the initial efficiency improved slightly. The electrochemical properties of the SG anodes improved slightly with carbon additives such as acetylene black (AB), Super P, Ketjen black, and carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, the cyclability was much improved due to the effect of the conductive bridge made by carbon additives such as AB and Super P.

Hot Pressing and Spark Plasma Sintering of AlN-SiC-TiB2 Systems using Boron and Carbon Additives (보론과 카본 조제를 사용한 AlN-SiC-TiB2계의 고온가압 및 Spark Plasma Sintering)

  • Effects of boron and carbon on the densification and thermal decomposition of an AlN-SiC-$TiB_2$ system were investigated. $SiO_2$ was mostly removed by the addition of carbon, while $Al_2O_3$ formed $Al_4O_4C$ and promoted the densification of the systems above $1850^{\circ}C$. Rather porous specimens were obtained without the additives after hot pressing at $2100^{\circ}C$, while densification was mostly completed at $2000^{\circ}C$ by using the additives. The sintering temperature decreased further to $1950^{\circ}C$ by applying spark plasma sintering. The additives promoted the shrinkage of AlN by forming a liquid phase which was originated from the carbo- and boro-thermal reduction of $Al_2O_3$ and AlN.

Effects of additives and sintering temperature on phase evolution and properties of carbon-clay ceramic composites

  • Effects of additives on phase development and physico-mechanical properties of mullite-carbon was investigated. Powdered clay, kaolinite and graphite of predetermined compositions were blended with additives using ball mill for 3 hrs at 60 rev/min. Samples were produced by uniaxial compression and sintered between $1400^{\circ}C$ and $1600^{\circ}C$ for one hr. They were characterized for various properties, developed phases and microstructural features. It was observed that the properties and phase developments in the samples were influenced by the additives. 10 wt % SiC served as nucleating point for SiC around $1400^{\circ}C$. 10wt % $TiO_2$ lead to development of 2.5 wt % TiC at $1500^{\circ}C$ which increased to 6.8 wt % at $1600^{\circ}C$. Ifon clay in the sample leads to development of anorthite and microcline in the samples. 10wt % $TiO_2$ is effective as anti-oxidant for graphite up to $1500^{\circ}C$. Base on strength and absorbed energy, sample C (with 10wt % $TiO_2$) sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$ is considered to be optimum.

  • We have been fabricated Thin-walled carbon nanotubes (TWNTs)/amine epoxy additives composite using Eco-friendly solvent system such as supercritical process and dry mixed process. TWNTs/amine epoxy additives composite has used as a curing agent for urethane based bisphenol A type epoxy resin. The thermo-mechanical property of the epoxy resin cured by TWNTs/amine epoxy additives composite is characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA) and dispersability of the nanotubes in the epoxy matrix is also confirmed by scanning electron microscope(SEM). As a results, the epoxy resin cured by TWNTs/amine epoxy additives composite with supercritical process shows enhanced dispersability of the TWNTs in the matrix and thermo-mechanical property when compare to dry mixed process.

Effects of Applyng Two Different Chemical Additives to the Litter on Broiler Performance and the Carbon Dioxide Gas Production in Poultry Houses (깔짚에 두 가지의 다른 화학제제를 첨가하였을 때 육계의 생산성과 계사내의 이산화탄소 가스 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of applying two different additives to the litter on broiler performance and the carbon dioxide gas production in poultry cages. In two different experiments, the carbon dioxide gas production in poultry litter used for 42 days was measured. The chemical additives were applied to the litter at a rate of 200 g aluminum chloride(A1Cl$_3$ㆍ6$H_2O$) or 200 g aluminum sulfate [Al$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ㆍ14$H_2O$, Alum] + 50 g carbon carbonate per kg litter. There was no effect on broiler performance by the litter additives, but the values of carbon dioxide gas produced from broiler litters which were treated with chemical additives were significantly lower(P < 0.05 and 0.01) than that of the control. This study showed that carbon dioxide gas production can be reduced by chemically treating the litter with A1Cl$_3$ or Alum + CaCO$_3$.
