Recently, the Carbon Fiber Sheet(CFS) is widely used to strengthen the RC beams. But the behaviour of the RC beams which is strengthened with the CFS is not clearly defined yet. So, in this study we experimented with simply supported RC beams strengthened with the CFS, under monotonic loads. We included three parameters in this experiment which are the number of the sheets, the length of the sheets, and the existence of the anchor bolts. We investigated the strength effect of the RC beams by adhesion of the CFS, and the strengthening effect of CFS as to the respective parameters.
External Confinement of concrete in CFS enhances strength and ductility of concrete columns. This paper presents the test results on the study of reinforced concrete columns strengthened with carbon fiber sheets. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the CFS confinement characteristics of square reinforced concrete columns and the CFS efficiency. The tests were performed with different lateral reinforcement ratios, CFS reinforcement ratios and concrete strength. Test results were characterized according to maximum loads and lateral strain of CFS.
We have demonstrated the feasibility of using electrospinning method to fabricate long and continuous composite nanofiber sheets of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) incorporated with zinc oxide (ZnO). Such PAN/ZnO composite nanofiber sheets represent an important step toward utilizing carbon nanofibers (CNFs) as materials to achieve remarkably enhanced physico-chemical properties. In an attempt to derive these advantages, we have used a variety of techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD) to obtain quantitative data on the materials. The CNFs produced are in the diameter range of 100 to 350 nm after carbonization at $1000^{\circ}C$. Electrical conductivity of the random CNFs was increased by increasing the concentration of ZnO. A dramatic improvement in porosity and specific surface area of the CNFs was a clear evidence of the novelty of the method used. This study indicated that the optimal ZnO concentration of 3 wt% is enough to produce CNFs having enhanced electrical and physico-chemical properties.
An experimental study was carried out to examine the structural behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams strengthened with aramid fiber sheets, carbon fiber sheets and plates, and to propose the reasonable strengthening method for the deteriorated R.C. deep beams. Results show that the most significant differences in behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams strengthened with fiber sheet and plate were mainly due to various fiber orientations and anchorage. Deep beams diagonally strengthened with carbon fibers show better performance compared with those of vertically, horizontally strengthened specimens and produce the increase in the shear resistance through the redistribution of internal forces after the initial cracks occur. However, strengthened deep beams without anchorages might show unreasonable, brittle peeling-off failure of fiber reinforcements.
It is known that physical and chemical changes of cement hydrates cause problems in the volume stability of concrete. In order to overcome these problems, there is a growing interest in research on mixing technology of cement-based materials and nanomaterials. Among the nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attracting attention due to their excellent mechanical properties. The CNTs are made of cylindrically shaped graphene sheets. According to the number of sheets, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are classified. Although the SWCNT has superior mechanical properties, the research using MWCNT is vigorous due to the difficulty of marketability and manufacturing, but the research using SWCNT is insufficient. In this study, we investigate the effect of SWCNT on the formation of hydrate of cement paste by observing the microstructure of broken cement paste after measuring the flexural strength of cement paste with SWCNT dispersion.
The effectiveness of the use of modern repair schemes for the seismic retrofit of existing RC structures were assessed on a comparative experimental study of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips and sheets for the repair of reinforced concrete members of RC frames, damaged because of cyclic loading. Two virgin, single - story, one - bay, 1/3 - scale frame specimens were tested under cyclic horizontal loading, up to a drift level of 4%. Then, virgin specimens, B and F, respectively, were repaired and retested in the same way. One, specimen RB, was repaired with epoxy injections and CFRP strips and one, specimen RF, was repaired with epoxy injections and CFRP sheets. The two specimens are used to examine the differences between the structural behavior of frames repaired using CFRP strips and frames repaired using CFRP sheets. Both qualitative and quantitative conclusions, based on the observed maximum loads, loading and reloading stiffness, hysteretic energy absorption and failure mechanisms are presented and compared. The repaired frames recovered their strength, stiffness and energy dissipated reasonably. The use of CFRP sheets was found more effective than CFRP strips, due to the proper anchorage.
Many existing concrete structures suffer from low quality of concrete and inadequate confinement reinforcement. These deficiencies cause low strength and ductility. Wrapping concrete by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite sheets enhances compressive strength and deformability. In this study, the effects of the thickness of the CFRP composite wraps on the behavior of concrete are investigated experimentally. Both monotonic and repeated compressive loads are considered during the tests, which are carried out on strengthened undamaged specimens, as well as the specimens, which were tested and damaged priorly and strengthened after repairing. The experimental data shows that, external confinement of concrete by CFRP composite sheets improves both compressive strength and deformability of concrete significantly as a function of the thickness of the CFRP composite wraps around concrete. Empirical equations are also proposed for compressive strength and ultimate axial deformation of FRP composite wrapped concrete. Test results available in the literature, as well as the experimental results presented in this paper, are compared with the analytical results predicted by the proposed equations.
The numerical study focuses on the analysis of the structural behavior of concrete beams containing outdated concrete and offers an innovative method of strengthening them using carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer sheets (CFRP). The focus is on modeling and analyzing the performance of aged concrete beams strengthened by CFRP in the flexural direction. This study presents an ultimate load model for CFRP-strengthened RC beams featuring outdated concrete layers. Validation through four-point bending tests and finite element modeling demonstrated the efficacy of the model. Findings indicate that CFRP sheets significantly enhance beam strength, particularly in structures with outdated concrete layers, resulting in increased ultimate load capacity. Moreover, an inverse relationship between ultimate load and concrete layer height was observed, with the CFS-21-15-30 sample exhibiting the most substantial reduction. Validation of the model was achieved using finite element analysis con-ducted in Abaqus software.
