  • Adsorption characteristics of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) by activated carbon fiber(ACF) were investigated using a continuous system for benzene, toluene, xylene(BTX) generation. Studied characteristics for adsorption were equilibrium capacity, accumulative adsorption, and breakthrough curve. Operating variables were adsorption temperature(25~45$^{\circ}C$) and partial pressure(1.2~12 mmHg) of BTX. The experimental results show that the adsorption equilibrium capacity increases with increasing partial pressure of BTX and decreases with increasing temperature. It was also found that the break point was decreased with increasing partial pressure, temperature and gas flow rate due to an effect of mass transfer of adsorbate.

  • Metal containing hydrogen free nanocrystalline structured carbon (Me:nc-C) films were synthesized by closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering system (CFUBM). The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the microstructure and physical properties of Me:nc-C films as a function of the concentration of materials. The film structures were examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The physical properties of the Me:nc-C films were evaluated by using a 4-point probe. The fraction of graphite clusters was found to be increased by containing titanium and the electrical resistivity decreased with increasing amount of containing.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate the relationship between the silver ion concentrations released from the point-of-use(POU) water purification devices installed silver impregnated activated carbon filters and the antibacterial activities against HPC bacteria. Total of 68 POU devices were tested. The concentrations of the eluted silver ion from the silver impregnated activated carbon filter showed the range from $4\;{\mu}g/L$ to $386\;{\mu}g/L$, and the HPC bacteria were found to diversely grow within the range 0-5,200 cfu/mL. The average silver concentrations released from UF units system and RO units system were $30\;{\mu}g/L$ and $73\;{\mu}g/L$, respectively. And the number of colonies were reduced significantly as the elution levels of silver exceeded $100\;{\mu}g/L$, however silver ions below the concentration of $100\;{\mu}g/L$ were not particularly effective for eradicating HPC bacteria from water.

  • In this paper, the removal characteristics of dissolved organic carbon (DOCs) by micro bubble ozonation process and $O_3/UV$ process were comparatively studied. In the point of DOC removing reaction coefficient, micro bubble ozonation system and $O_3/UV$ process had not significant difference, $0.0120sec^{-1}$ and $0.0141sec^{-1}$. Therefore micro bubble ozonation process is more suitable for tertiary treatment of sewage in the point of installation and maintenance cost-reducing. The optimum ozone injection rate was 2.0 g $O_3/g$ DOC and HRT was 3 min for the micro bubble ozonation process. The removal efficiency of DOC and SUVA in micro bubble ozonation system was 32.8% and 58.3% respective. Biological aerated filter (BAF) process was installed to remove soluble organic material increased by micro bubble ozonation system. And the effluent BOD of BAF was below 1.0 mg/L. In the view of cost-effectiveness, $O_3/BAF$ process was more profitable than $O_3/UV/BAF$ process for tertiary treatment of sewage. In order to nitrify ammonia in the BAF process completely, $NH_4{^+}-N$ concentration in the influent water of BAF should be designed considering low water temperature in the winter season.

  • As an environmental pollution and global warming due to an excessive carbon emission are intensified, the importance of renewable energy is in rise today. TCP (Tidal Current Power), one of the renewable energy sources, generates electricity by converting kinetic energy of current into rotational energy of turbine. Also the TCP has a great advantages of predictability and reliability. Because the generating power is proportional to cubic of stream velocity, amplifying current speed by applying duct is highly effective to increase the generating power. SPM (Single Point Mooring) can be applied for the weather vane with various current direction and also augments generating power of the system. In addition, simple installation and retrieval could be a merit of SPM system. By combining duct and SPM, TCP system for relatively low-speed-current and shallow water region can be feasible and economical. In this study, single point moored duct-type TCP system was designed and the motion of submerged structure was investigated in both numerical and experimental method. DNV wadam V4.8-1 and OrcaFlex 10.0a were used for the frequency and time domain motion analysis of system respectively. Duct model scaled by 0.05 of Froude conformity ratio and CWC (Circulate Water Channel) are used for experiment.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the effect of oxidation inhibitor contents on the work of adhesion, fracture toughness, and impact strength of the unidirectional carbon-carbon composites (C/C composites). The molybdenum disilicide ($MoSi_2$) used as an oxidation inhibitor was impregnated with phenolic resins to improve the anti-oxidation properties of the composites in different concentrations of 4, 12 and 20 wt%. Based on Wilhelmy equation, the work of adhesion of C/C composites was calculated by contact angle methods. Fracture toughness and impact strength were pressured by three-point bending test for the critical intensity factor ($K_IC$) and Izod test method, respectively. As a result, the composites made with $MoSi_2$ resulted in an increasing of both fracture toughness and impact strength. Especially, the composites made with 12 wt% $MoSi_2$ content showed the highest value of London dispersive component, $W_A\;^L$, in work of adhesion, resulting from improving the interfacial adhesion force among fibers, filler, and matrix in this system.

  • Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology mitigates the emission amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and can reduce green house effect which causes the climate change. Deep saline aquifer or obsolete oil/gas storage etc. in the marine geological structure are considered as the candidates for the storage. The injection and storage relating technology have been interested in the global society, however the adverse effect caused by leakage from the system failure. Even the safety level of the CCS is very high and there is almost no possibility to leak but, still the risk to marine ecosystem of the high concentrated carbon dioxide exposure is not verified. The present study introduces the system and environmental risk assessment methods. The feature, event and process approach can be a good starting point and we found the some possibility from the fault tree analysis for evaluation. From the FEP analysis, we drove the possible scenario which we need to concentrate on the construction and operation stages.

  • Stormwater runoff from urban road area as non-point source has a tendency of including lots of pollutants at initial rain period. Recently, there are several cases of having installed treatment facilities for reducing pollution discharge from the impervious cover in urban area to prevent watershed environment from getting worse. The filtration type among non-point source treatment systems has been known as one of the most efficient system for treatment of non-point source pollutants. Therefore, various kinds of filter media such as expanded polypropylene(EPP), granular activated carbon, zeolite, perlite, illite, sand, gravel has been developed. This study was conducted to verify performance and hydraulic characteristics of filter media as measures for non-point source. The experiment was carried out to evaluate applicability and variation of 4 kind of most popular filter media(EPP, GAC, Zeolite, Perlite) in headloss with elapsed time and influent flow rate and to obtain data base that could be used to establish management plan for road runoff treatment. In experiment by tap water, it showed that EPP and perlite those are floatable materials showed stable operating performance and lower headloss than the others.

  • Carbon coils could be synthesized on nickel catalyst layer-deposited silicon oxide substrate using $C_2H_2$ and $H_2$ as source gases and $SF_6$ as an additive gas under thermal chemical vapor deposition system. The characteristics (formation density and morphology) of as-grown carbon coils according to the injection stage of $SF_6$ gas incorporation were investigated. A continuous injecting of $SF_6$ gas flow could give rise to many types of carbon coils-related geometries, namely linear tub, micro-sized coil, nano-sized coil, and wave-like nano-sized coil. However, the limitation of the geometry as the nano-sized geometries of carbon coils could be achieved by the incorporation of $SF_6$ in a short time (1 min) during the initial deposition stage. A delayed injection of a short time $SF_6$ gas flow can deteriorate the limitation of the geometries. It confirms that the injection time and its starting point of $SF_6$ gas flow would be very important to determine the geometries of carbon coils.

  • Reducing carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) exhaust has become a major issue for society in the last few years, especially since the initial release of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 that strictly limited the emissions of greenhouse gas for each country. One of the primary sectors affecting the levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases is agriculture where $CO_2$ is not only consumed by plants but also produced from various types of soil and agricultural ecosystems including greenhouses. In greenhouse cultivation, $CO_2$ concentration plays an essential role in the photosynthesis process of crops. Optimum control of greenhouse $CO_2$ enrichment based on accurate monitoring of the added $CO_2$ can improve profitability through efficient crop production and reduce environmental impact, compared to traditional management practices. In this study, a sensor-based control system that could estimate the required $CO_2$ concentration considering emission from soil for cucumber greenhouses was developed and evaluated. The relative profitability index (RPI) was defined by the ratio of growth rate to supplied $CO_2$. RPI for a greenhouse controlled at lower set point of $CO_2$ concentration (500 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$) was greater than that of greenhouse at higher set point (800 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$). Evaluation tests to optimize $CO_2$ enrichment concluded that the developed control system would be applicable not only to minimize over-exhaust of $CO_2$ but also to maintain the crop profitability.
