  • The variations of the positive and negative electrode potentials, and of internal pressure were measured during the charge of the sealed type Ni-Cd cell. Both polarization characteristics of a paste type Cd-electrode as a gas diffusion electrode in 30% KOH solution and the effects of active carbon electrode as an oxygen consuming auxiliary electrode of the Ni-Cd cell on the charging characteristics of the cell were studied. Peak voltage at the end of charge of the cell is ascribed to the peak at the negative electrode potential, which is due to the concentration polarization by the lack of $Cd^{++}$ ion and oxygen concentration. And the recovery of the negative electrode potential is resulted from depolarization by the increasing diffusion limiting current density with the increasing oxygen pressure. The active carbon electrode was effective as an oxygen consuming auxiliary electrode. The internal pressure of the cell could be maintained below 200mmHg even at one hour rate charge and overcharge by the use of active carbon electrode as an auxiliary electrode.

  • In this work, soft carbons produced by pyrolysis of petroleum and coal-tar pitch were used as the negative electrode for Li-ion batteries. We studeid the charge/discharge capacity and the interfacial reaction of these electrodes by constructing a half cell. Charge/discharge property was studied by a constant-current step and the interfacial reaction between the electrolyte and the surface of a carbon electrode was studied by the cyclic voltammetry. The initial charge/discharge capacity for the coal-tar pitch carbon increased exceedingly with the heat treatment temperature. On hte other hand, the capacity of the petroleum pitch carbon increased with temperature up to 1000$^{\circ}C$, thereafter decreased continuously. While the charge capacity decreased with the cycle number, the reversibility increased above 90%. In addition, the thermal stability and crystallization of petroleum and coal-tar pitches were analyzed by TGA and XRD, respectively.

  • A hybrid supercapacitor is fabricated using a composite material from $LiMn_2O_4$ (LMO) and activated carbon (AC) as the positive electrode and AC as the negative electrode to form the (LMO + AC)/AC system. Volume ratio (positive : negative) of electrodes is controlled to investigate of the power and energy balance. The (LMO + AC)/AC system shows better performances than the LMO/AC system. Especially, electrochemical impedance spectra, rate charge.discharge and cycle performance testing show that the (LMO + AC)/AC system have an outstanding electrochemical performance at volume ratios of (LMO + AC)/AC = 1 : 1.7 and 1 : 2. Electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) capacitance between AC of the positive electrode and AC of the negative electrode improves power density without loss of capacitance. Stable capacitance is achieved by lowering the positive electrode resistance and balancing the energy and power densities between the positive and negative electrodes by the addition of AC to the positive electrode at high current density.

  • The purposes of this research are to know the dust removal efficiency according to the changes of gab between positive and negative plates in dust removal chamber. The experiments for dust removal efficiencies were conducted with changing the electrode-plate gab from 2 cm to 1 cm while the electric pressure, influent flow, and linear velocity were kept 5 kV, 80 L/min, and 6 cm/sec, respectively. From the experimental results of the electrode-plate gab of 2 cm, dust removal efficiencies were decreased to as low as about 50%. Attached dust on the surface of electrodes was released due to a reverse electric charge of dust. From the experimental results of the electrode-plate gab of 1 cm, dust removal efficiencies were increased to as high as about 80% due to the dust attachment velocity to the electrodes to be far more fast than influent linear velocity. Finally, to protect a attached dust from occurring a reverse electric charge it is needed to install the non-conductor between positive and negative electrodes and also to remove air humidity.

  • The carbon-coated silicon monoxide (c-SiOx), which is a negative electrode active material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), has a limited cycle performance due to severe volume changes during cycles, despite its high specific capacity. In particular, the significant volume change of the active material can deform the electrode structure and easily damage the electron transfer pathway. To improve performance and mitigate electrode damage caused by volume changes, we replaced parts of the carbon black conducting agent with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) having a linear shape. The content of the entire conductive material in the electrode was fixed at 10% by mass, and the relative content of CNTs ranged from 0% to 25% by mass to prepare electrodes and evaluate electrochemical performance. As the CNT content in the electrode increased, both cycle life and rate capability improved. Even a small amount of CNT can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of a c-SiOx negative electrode with large volume changes. Furthermore, dispersing CNTs effectively can lead to achieving the equivalent performance with a reduced quantity of CNTs.

  • The electrosorption of U(VI) from waste water was carried out by using an activated carbon fiber (ACF) felt electrode in a continuous electrosorption cell. In order to enhance the electrosorption capacity at a lower potential, the ACF was electrochemically modified in an acidic and a basic solution. Pore structure and functional groups of the electrochemically modified ACF were examined, and the effects of the modification conditions were studied for the adsorption of U(VI). Specific surface area of all the ACFs was decreased by this modification. The amount of the acidic functional groups decreased with a basic modification, while the amount increased a lot with an acidic modification. The electrosorption capacity of U(VI) decreased on the acid modified electrode due to the shielding effect of the acidic functional groups. The base modified electrode enhanced the capacity due to a reduction of the acidic functional groups. The electrosorption amount of U(VI) on the base modified electrode at .0.3 V corresponds to that of the as-received ACF electrode at .0.9 V. Such a good adsorption capacity was due to a reduction of the shielding effect and an increase of the hydroxyl ions in the electric double layer on the ACF surface by the application of negative potential.

  • The purposes of this research are to study on optimal distance between positive and negative electrodes in dust removal chamber. The experiments were performed with electrode-plate gab arranging in order of 3 cm, 2 cm, 1 cm in series while varying influent flow-rate. From the experimental results of dust removal the optimal influent linear velocity was 6 cm/sec and the total mass of attached dust on the surface of electrode-plate was increased as electrode-plate gab is closer. But in case of electrode-plate gab being very close about 1 cm or so, the attached dust on the surface of electrode-plate was shown releasing from electrode-plate due to dust electric-charge changing (reverse ionization). Evantually. optimal distance between positive and negative electrode-plates was about 2 cm and also optimal dust loading rate was about $24mg/min{\cdot}m^2$.

  • The electrochemical behaviors of estrone in the presence of various surfactants were examined with great details. It is found that a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), obviously facilitates the electro-oxidation of estrone at carbon paste electrode (CPE) from the significant peak current enhancement and the negative shift of peak potential. Additionally, chronocoulometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were also used for further investigation of the electrode process of estrone, indicating that low concentration of CTAB exhibits excellent enhancement effects on the electrochemical oxidation of estrone, greatly enhances the diffusion coefficient and the electron transfer rate. Based on this, an electrochemical method was proposed for the determination of estrone. The oxidation peak current is proportional to the concentration of estrone in the ranges over 9.0 × 10?8 - 8.0 × 10?6 mol/L, and a low detection limit of 4.0 × 10?8 mol/L was obtained for 180s accumulation at open circuit (S/N = 3). Finally, this proposed method was demonstrated using estrone tablets with good satisfaction.

  • A hybrid electrochemical capacitor having both characteristics of electric double layer capacitance and pseudo-capacitance was studied throughout cell tests. Asymmetric electrodes with $Ni(OH)_2/activated$ carbon based positive electrode and activated carbon based negative electrode were used in preparing test cells of $5\times5cm^2$. Cyclic voltammetry measurements and impedance measurements were conducted to understand electrochemical behavior of each electrode. To find an optimal mass ratio of negative to positive electrode, charge-discharge cycle tests were also performed.
