In this study, we fabricated an $NO_X$ gas sensor using a composite film of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)/zinc oxide (ZnO). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) show good electronic conductivity and chemical-stability, and zinc oxide (ZnO) is a wide band gap semiconductor with a large exciton binding energy. Gas sensors require characteristics such as high speed, sensitivity, and selectivity. The fabricated gas sensor was used to detect $NO_X$ gas at different $NO_X$ concentrations. The sensitivity of the gas sensor increased with increasing gas concentrations. Additionally, while changing the temperature inside the chamber containing the MWCNT/ZnO gas sensor, we obtained the sensitivity and normalized responses for detecting $NO_X$ gas in comparison to ZnO and MWCNT film gas sensors. From the experimental results, we confirmed that the gas sensor sensing mechanism was enhanced in the composite-film gas-sensor and that the electronic interaction between MWCNT and ZnO contributed to the improved sensor performance.
Activated carbon (AC) with very large surface area has high capacitance per weight. However, such activation methods tend to suffer from low yields, below 50%, and are low in electrode density and capacitance per volume. Carbon NanoFibers (CNFs) had high surface area polarizability, high electrical conductivity and chemical stability, as well as extremely high mechanical strength and modulus, which make them an important material for electrochemical capacitors. The electrochemical properties of immobilized CNF electrodes were studied for use as in electrical double layer capacitor (EDLC) applications. Immobilized CNFs on Ni foam grown by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) were successfully fabricated. CNFs had a uniform diameter range from 50 to 60 nm. Surface area was 56 m$^2$/g. CNF electrodes were compared with AC and multi wall carbon nanotube (MWNT) electrodes. The electrochemical performance of the various electrodes was examined with aqueous electrolyte of 2M KOH. Equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the CNF electrodes was lower than that of AC and MWNT electrodes. The specific capacitance of 47.5 F/g of the CNF electrodes was achieved with discharge current density of 1 mA/cm$^2$.
In this paper, we fabricated organic compounds detector using the MWCNT/PMMA (multi-walled carbon nanotube / polymethylmethacrylate) composite film. We used polymer film as a matrix material for the device framework, and introduced CNTs for reacting with the organic compounds resulting in changing electrical conductivity. Spray coating method was used to form the MWCNT/PMMA composite film detector, and pattern formation of the detector was done by shadow mask during the spray coating process. We investigated changes of electrical conductivity of the detector before and after the organic compounds exposure. Electrical conductivity of the detector tended to decrease after the exposure with various organic compounds such as acetone, tetrahydrofuran (THF), toluene, and dimethylformamide (DMF). Finally we conclude that organic compounds detection by the MWCNT/PMMA composite film detector was possible, and expect the feasibility of commercial MWCNT/PMMA composite film detector for various organic compounds.
The effects of thermal treatment on CNTs, which were coated with a-$CN_x$ thin film, were investigated and related to variations of chemical bonding and morphologies of CNTs and also properties of field emission induced by thermal treatment. CNTs were directly grown on nano-sized conical-type tungsten tips via the inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD) system, and a-$CN_x$ films were coated on the CNTs using an RF magnetron sputtering system. Thermal treatment on a-$CN_x$ coated CNT-emitters was performed using a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) system by varying temperature ($300-700^{\circ}C$). Morphologies and microstructures of a-$CN_x$/CNTs hetero-structured emitters were analyzed by FESEM and HRTEM. Chemical composition and atomic bonding structures were analyzed by EDX, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS. The field emission properties of the a-$CN_x$/CNTs hetero-structured emitters were measured using a high vacuum (below $10^{-7}$ Torr) field-emission measurement system. For characterization of emission stability, the fluctuation and degradation of the emission current were monitored in terms of operation time. The results were compared with a-$CN_x$ coated CNT-emitters that were not thermally heated as well as with the conventional non-coated CNT-emitters.
In this study, electromechanical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) thin film on flexible substrates were measured using a micro-tensile machine with functionality of simultaneous measurements of displacement, load and electrical resistance. The CNT thin film of about 100 nm thick was deposited on flexible substrates, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) using spraying and ink-jetting techniques. To investigate the effect of process condition on the electromechanical properties of CNT thin film, sets of CNT samples were fabricated under various heat treatments and microwave process. The microstructures of the CNT thin film before and after tensile test were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and the failure modes of the CNT thin films were identified to understand their electromechanical behaviors and interaction with the flexible substrates. Based on the experimental results, the use of CNT thin film as flexible electrodes and strain gages is discussed.
Carbon nanotube (CNT) field effect transistors and sensors use CNT as a current channel, of which the resistance varies with the gate voltage or upon molecule adsorption. Since the performance of CNT devices depends very much on the CNT/metal contact resistance, the CNT/electrode contact must be stable and the contact resistance must be small. Depending on the geometry of CNT/electrode contact, it can be categorized into the end-contact, embedded-contact (top-contact), and side-contact (bottom-contact). Because of difficulties in the sample preparation, the end-contact CNT device is seldom practiced. The embedded-contact in which CNT is embedded inside the electrode is desirable due to its rigidness and the low contact resistance. Fabrication of this structure is complicated, however, because each CNT has to be located under a high-resolution microscope and then the electrode is patterned by electron beam lithography. The side-contact is done by depositing CNT electrophoretically or by precipitating on the patterned electrode. Although this contact is fragile and the contact resistance is relatively high, the side-contact by far has been widely practiced because of its simple fabrication process. Here we introduce a simple method to embed CNT inside the electrode while taking advantage of the bottom-contact process. The idea is to utilize a eutectic material as an electrode, which melts at low temperature so that CNT is not damaged while annealing to melt the electrode to embed CNT. The lowering of CNT/Au contact resistance upon annealing at mild temperature has been reported, but the electrode in these studies did not melt and CNT laid on the surface of electrode even after annealing. In our experiment, we used a eutectic Au/Al film that melts at 250$^{\circ}C$. After depositing CNT on the electrode made of an Au/Al thin film, we annealed the sample at 250$^{\circ}C$ in air to induce eutectic melting. As a result, Au-Al alloy grains formed, under which the CNT was embedded to produce a rigid and low resistance contact. The embedded CNT contact was as strong as to tolerate the ultrasonic agitation for 90 s and the current-voltage measurement indicated that the contact resistance was lowered by a factor of 4. By performing standard fabrication process on this CNT-deposited substrate to add another pair of electrodes bridged by CNT in perpendicular direction, we could fabricate a CNT cross junction. Finally, we could conclude that the eutectic alloy electrode is valid for CNT sensors by examine the detection of Au ion which is spontaneously reduced to CNT surface. The device sustatined strong washing process and maintained its detection ability.

This paper surveys the physical properties of the multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT) and polyurethane composite film for improvement of mechanical properties and electrical characteristics. The modification of MWNT was carried out by acid treatment with nitric and sulphuric acid mixed solution, and then followed by thermal treatment for enhancing MWNT dispersion with polyurethane. This modified MWNT was mixed with polyurethane by changing the loading content of MWNT and dispersion time under the dimethylformamide solution in the ultrasonic wave apparatus. Various physical characteristics of the modified PU/MWNT films were measured and analyzed in terms of the loading content and dispersion time. The maximum absorbance of the PU/MWNT films were observed with the 2wt% loading at dispersion times of 2 and 24 hour, respectively. The minimum electrical volume resistivity of PU/MWNT film was shown at the loading content of 0.5wt% or more irrespective of dispersion treating time. However the optimum condition was assumed to 2wt% loading at dispersion time of 2 hours by assessing the surface profile of the film using video microscope. The breaking stress and strain of the PU/MWNT film decreased with increasing loading content, but no change of physical properties was shown with increasing in dispersion time.
We report the field emission characteristics of transparent single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) film printed using an inkjet. Pure SWNTs dispersed in dimethylformamide were printed in a transparent layer on indium-tin oxide-coated glass and annealed at $350^{\circ}C$. After taping treatment, SWNTs were oriented vertically on the substrate. The front and the back of the fabricated device produced simultaneous emissions of identical quality. In addition, inkjet printing directly achieved a patterned emission, without a secondary pattern process. This method allows simple fabrication using only SWNTs, without the use of other additives.
