Flexible electrodes for wearable devices have been actively studied in not only achieving mechanical/electrical stability, but also providing various functionalities for extending its industrial application. In this study, a flexible carbon/PDMS composite is prepared by addition of carbon black (CB) as a conductive filler, and effect of CB with different contents on electrical properties of the composite was investigated for the application of flexible electrodes, temperature sensor and heater. With increase of CB contents, resistivity of the carbon/PDMS was increased, and excellent durability was observed, confirmed by repetitive stretching deformation test. Resistance increase of the carbon/PDMS with temperature reveals the property of positive temperature coefficient, which can be applied for temperature sensor. Also, joule heating on the carbon/PDMS was observed when electrical potential was applied, indicating the applicability of the carbon/PDMS for heater.

We report on the preparation of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) followed by their dispersion in various solvents. To disperse MWNTs without acids of surfactants, which are the commonly used methods, hydrophobic PDMS coating was selected. It was determined that the PDMS coated MWNTs are more dispersed in diverse solvents such as dimethyl formamide (DMF) and acetone than bare MWNTs. In case of DMF solvent, dispersion of MWNT was improved by 40 % upon PDMS-coating of MWNT, which was confirmed by UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy. In this work, the PDMS coated MWNTs dispersed solution was also used for the fabrication of film, which is conductive, transparent and superhydrophobic because of the reduced aggregation and increased water repellency of MWNTs.

Poly(ether block amide) (PEBA)/poly(dimethyl-siloxane) (PDMS) blend membranes (PEBA : PDMS = 5 : 2, 6 : 1 wt%) were prepared through the solution-casting and phase inversion process in order to demonstrate their superior performance in carbon dioxide separation. PDMS and PEBA (4033) were also prepared by the same method using n-butanol as a solvent. To study the gas permeation properties, the membranes were characterized with SEM and tested with carbon dioxide and nitrogen at $35^{\circ}C$ and pressure ranging from 3 to 5 atm. In conclusion, PEBA/PDMS blend membranes were shown to have selectivity for $CO_2/N_2$ separation that is 4 to 5 magnitudes greater than that of PDMS membrane at 3 atm.

We report a facile method to fabricate superhydrophobic, transparent and conductive film using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) which are coated by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). In order to prepare a film, PDMS coated MWCNTs were dispersed in solvents and the solution was drop-casted on substrates. It was demonstrated that the PDMS coating enhanced the dispersion of MWCNTs in diverse solvents such as dimethyl formamide(DMF) and acetone without the use of acids or surfactants, which are the common methods. In the case of DMF solvent, dispersion of MWCNT was improved by 40 % upon PDMS-coating of MWCNT. Enhanced dispersion of MWCNTs made it possible to fabricate transparent and conductive film homogeneously on the substrate and PDMS-coating on MWCNTs also made the surface hydrophobic. We can fabricate a uniform and multifunctional MWCNT film (transparent, conductive, superhydrophobic and flexible) which is applicable on large area without any physical damage and expensive equipment.

When a laser pulse is irradiated on a CNT (Carbon Nanotube) and PDMS (Poly dimethylsiloxane) composite coated on a transparent PMMA (Poly methyl methacrylate) substrate, a strong ultrasonic wave is generated due to the thermoelastic effect. In this paper, the thermoacoustic theory related to the wave generation by the CNT/PDMS composite was established. The waveforms of ultrasonic waves when a laser pulse having a Gaussian waveform is irradiated on the composite with a thickness of $20{\mu}m$ were numerically simulated. From the results, it was confirmed that ultrasonic shock waves can be generated from the CNT/PDMS composite and the waveforms are changed little even if the physical properties of the composite are changed by ${\pm}20%$. It was found that the peak positive and negative pressures increase as the thermal expansion coefficient increases, or as density, heat capacity and sound speed decreased. However, those changes were not so sensitive with thermal conductivity. In addition, the physical properties of the CNT/PDMS composite fabricated in this study were estimated from the comparison of the measurement and simulation results.

Photoacoustic generation of ultrasound is an effective approach for development of high-frequency and high-amplitude ultrasound transmitters. This requires an efficient energy converter from optical input to acoustic output. For such photoacoustic conversion, various light-absorbing materials have been used such as metallic coating, dye-doped polymer composite, and nanostructure composite. These transmitters absorb laser pulses with 5-10 ns widths for generation of tens-of-MHz frequency ultrasound. The short optical pulse leads to rapid heating of the irradiated region and therefore fast thermal expansion before significant heat diffusion occurs to the surrounding. In this purpose, nanocomposite thin films containing gold nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), or carbon nanofibers have been recently proposed for high optical absorption, efficient thermoacosutic transfer, and mechanical robustness. These properties are necessary to produce a high-amplitude ultrasonic output under a low-energy optical input. Here, we investigate carbon nanotube (CNT)-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite transmitters and their nanostructure-originated characteristics enabling extraordinary energy conversion. We explain a thermoelastic energy conversion mechanism within the nanocomposite and examine nanostructures by using a scanning electron microscopy. Then, we measure laser-induced damage threshold of the transmitters against pulsed laser ablation. Particularly, laser-induced damage threshold has been largely overlooked so far in the development of photoacoustic transmitters. Higher damage threshold means that transmitters can withstand optical irradiation with higher laser energy and produce higher pressure output proportional to such optical input. We discuss an optimal design of CNT-PDMS composite transmitter for high-amplitude pressure generation (e.g. focused ultrasound transmitter) useful for therapeutic applications. It is fabricated using a focal structure (spherically concave substrate) that is coated with a CNT-PDMS composite layer. We also introduce some application examples of the high-amplitude focused transmitter based on the CNT-PDMS composite film.
This paper investigated the electrical properties of multiwall carbon nanotube reinforced polydimethylsiloxane (CNT-PDMS) strain sensors with copper electrodes on the wet-etched surface. MWCNT-PDMS strain sensors were fabricated according to the wt% of MWCNT. Surfaces on the electrode area were wet-etched with various etching duration and silver epoxy adhesives were spread on the wet-etched surface. Finally, we attached the copper electrodes to the MWCNT-PMDS strain sensors. We checked the electric conductivities by the two-probe method and sensing characteristics under the cyclic loading. We observed the electric conductivity of MWCNT-PDMS strain sensors increased sharply and the scattering of the measured data decreased when the surface of the electrode area was wet-etched. Initial resistances of MWCNT-PDMS strain sensors were inversely proportion to wt% of MWCNT and the etching duration. However, the resistance changing rates under 30% strain increased as wt% of MWCNT and the etching duration increased. Decreasing rate of the electric resistance change after 100 repetitions was smaller when wt% of MWCNT was larger and the etching duration was short. This was due to the low initial resistance of the MWCNT-PMDS strain sensors by the wet-etching.
We proposed new and easy fabrication method of micro-nano hierarchical structures for synthetic dry adhesives and conducted feasibility tests of alignment characteristics of nano-materials in the microstructures by capillary effect. Candidates of fabrication conditions were selected based on the degree of cure and viscosity of mixtures of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which were measured with respect to the fabrication conditions. Scanning electron microscopy images of cross sections of MWCNT-PDMS microstructures were analyzed. MWCNT alignment in microstructures was better when fabrication temperature and degree of cure at fabricating start were lower, but areal density of MWCNTs was little affected by fabrication conditions.
A carbon-containing silica glass was prepared from orgaincally modified silicate(Ormosil) by heat treatment in N2 atmosphere after the ormosil was synthesized using sol-gel method. The Ormosil was fabricated from the TEOS as the inorganic component and the PDMS as the organic component. The Ormosil changed to balck-coloured glass by carbon decomposed from the PDMS when the Ormosil was heated to 450$^{\circ}C$ 20hrs. A dense silicon oxycarbide glass with 2.08 g/cm3 was obtained by heating the Ormosil at 1050$^{\circ}C$ 10hrs. The microstructure of the carbon-containing silica glass was observed by SEM and the SiOxC4-x structure was confirmed by XPS measurement. The densification of the glass was studied by measurements of specific surface area linear shrinkage and geometric density.
