This study was conducted for the establishment of the analytical method of pesticide residues in rice straw for 9 pesticides; etofenprox, tricyclazole, diazinon, edifenphos, propiconazole, carbaryl, carbofuran, 3-hydroxy carbofuran and 3-keto carbofuran and for the monitoring of these pesticides in rice straw for livestock feed in Korea. These pesticides were classified into 4 groups according to analytical instrument condition. Group 1 (HPLC-UVD1) included tricyclazole and etofenprox while group 2 (HPLC-UVD2) included propiconazole and edifenphos. Group 3 (HPLC-FLD) included carbaryl, carbofuran, 3-hydroxy carbofuran and 3-keto carbofuran. Group 4 (GC-NPD) included Diazinon. The dried rice straw samples were extracted with acetone and purified by liquid-liquid partition and solid phase extraction (SPE): Combination of Florisil SPE and amino-propyl SPE was used for group 1 and group 2, amino-propyl SPE for group 3, and Florisil SPE was for group 4. Recovery was in the ranged 70~110% and the limits of quantitation (LOQ) were lower than the half of maximum residue limits. Therefore this method was proved to be efficient for monitoring of these pesticides residue in rice straw. A total of 18 rice straw samples from 6 provinces in Korea in 2010 were analyzed using established method and, only 3-keto carbofuran was detected in one sample at concentration of 0.04 mg/kg.
Carbofuran was incubated for four weeks in three differenf types of paddy soil samples at 25$\circ$C. The soil samples prepared in the present study were as follows: control soil, 3% cellulose added soil and 10% cellulose added soil. The degradation rate of carbofuran significantly decreased by the addition of cellulose to soil(p<0.05). The initial pH of soils was 5.0. After incubation for four weeks, the pH of 10% cellulose added soil sample was lower than those of control soil and 3% cellulose added soil. According to increased organic carbon content of the soil, redox potentials of soils decreased. The decreased degradation rate of carbofuran in 10% cellulose added soil was related to the highly negative redox potentials in contrast with the oxidised conditions of control soil and 3% cellulose added soil.

Sphingomonas sp. strain SB5 could degrade carbofuran and carbofuran-7-phenol to a hydrolytic product, 2-hydroxy-3-(3-methlypropan-2-o1)phenol, and several red metabolites. However, the chemical structures of the red metabolites have largely remained unidentified. In this study, we identified the structure of one of the red metabolites as 5-(2-hydroxy-2-methyl-propyl)-2,2-dimethyl- 2,3-dihydro-naphtho[2,3-6]furan-4,6,7,9-tetrone by using mass spectrometric and NMR ($^1$H, $^{13}$C) analyses. It is suggested that the red metabolite resulted from condensation of some metabolites in the degradation of 2-hydroxy-3-(3-methlypropan-2-o1)phenol, a hydrolytic product derived from carbofuran. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to report a red metabolite in bacterial degradation of the insecticide carbofuran.
The systemic insecticides carbofuran $(Curaterr\; 3\%\; G)$ mephosfolan $(Cytrolane\; 2\%\; G)$ and disulfoton$(Disyston\; 5\%\; G)$ were evaluated in the field for conrol of some insects on soybeans when the insecticides were applied in seeding-pits at the rates of 4.6, 9.2 and 13.8 mg(a.i)/pit at the planting time. Control of the soybean aphid (Aphis glycines Matsumura) and the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus telarius(L.)) on soybeans was obtained for about 2 to 3 months, but their treatments were ineffective against the soybean moth (Grapholitha glycinivorella Matsumura). For the control of aphids and mites, disulfoton was better than carbofuran and mephosfolan. The insecticides slightly reduced the soybean stands, while the low-dose treatments of carbofuran slightly increased the stands. Carbofuran and mephosfolan caused severe phytotoxicity at the early stages, but disulfoton showed slight or negligible phytotoxicity. The phytotoxic symptoms in carbofuran and mephosfolan treatments were shelving the large number of brown or black-brown spots on the cotyledon and the first-leaves, and in addition to that showing necrosis along the leaf-margin. The symptoms in disulfoton treatments were slight withering along the leaf-margin of the first-leaves. In spite of good control of aphids and mites, there were no differences in soybean yield.
The leaching behavior of $^{14}C-carbofuran$, $^{14}C-bentazon$, and $^{14}C-3,3,4,4'-tetrachloroazobenzene(TCAB)$ in the forms of freshly treated, 3-month-aged, and 6-month-aged residues, respectively, was investigated in a loamy soil column system. The degradation and mobility of pesticides in soil and the possibility of the contamination of groundwater were followed by this approach: The ambient temperature of $15{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, irrigation by the constant-head method on soil columns, and leaching with 1332 ml of simulated precipitation during 90 days. While the fresh residues of $^{14}C-carbofuran$ and $^{14}C-bentazon$ were very mobile, the aged ones were remarkably reduced in their mobility. Fresh and aged residues of $^{14}C-TCAB$ were very immobile, instead. 3-Keto carbofuran phenol(2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-3-oxo-7-benzofuranol) was the major degradation product present in the leachate from the soil column containing freshly treated $^{14}C-carbofuran$, while no metabolites could be detected in the leachates from the columns containing $^{14}C-bentazon$ or $^{14}C-TCAB$.
A study was undertaken to investigate the absorption, translocation and metabolism of carbofuran in rice paddies. Ring-3-$^{14}C-carbofuran$ applied onto the paddy soil surface was rapidly absorbed and translocated into rice plants. Within 2 days after treatment, it was observed that carbofuran reached shoot tips and accumulated. More than 15% of total radioactivity was recovered in rice plant from 3 to 20 days after treatment. In organic soluble fraction of rice plant extract, 3-hydroxycarbofuran was the major metabolite recording 43% and 4% of total organic soluble radioactivity in shoot and root at 20 days respectively. 3-Ketocarbofuran and phenolic metabolites including carbofuran phenol, 3-hydroxycarbofuran phenol and 3-ketocarbofuran phenol were also detected in the organic soluble fractions. Some glycosidic conjugates of carbofuran metabolites were found in water soluble fraction of rice plant extract and 3-hydroxycarbofuran was the most abundant aglycone. Radioactivity in paddy soil was rapidly decreased until 3 days after treatment and then maintained almost constant level. A significant portion (42∼56 %) of the total radioactivity remained in soil as nonextractable residue from 5 to 20 days after treatment. The nonextractable radioactivity was mainly located in soil organic matter distributing in humin, fulvic acid and humic acid fractions with the decreasing order. Evolution of $^{14}CO_2$ from ring cleavage of $3-^{14}C-carbofuran$ was negligible recording only 1.8% of total radioactivity during 20 days after treatment.
The pesticide is raising public interest in the world, because it causes damage to an environmental pollution and the human health remaining agricultural products and an ecosystem, in spite of the advantages. Particularly, each country restricts the residual pesticide and induces observance about the safety and usage standard so that they can control the amount of pesticide used and defend the safety of agricultural products. The habitual practice for the analysis of the residual pesticide depends on GC (gas chromatography), HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) and GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy), which triturate the fixed quantity of samples, abstract and purify as a suitable organic solvent. These methods have the highly efficient in aspects of sensitivity and accuracy. On the other hand, they need the high cost, time consuming, much effort, expensive equipment and the skillful management. Carbofuran is highly toxic by inhalation and ingestion and moderately toxic by dermal absorption. As with other carbamate compounds, it is metabolized in the liver and eventually excreted in the urine. The half-life of carbofuran on crops is about 4 days when applied to roots, and longer than 4 days if applied to the leaves. This research was conducted to develop immunoassay for detecting carbofuran residue quickly on the basis of surface plasmon resonance and to evaluate the measurement sensitivity. Gold chip used was CM5 spreaded dextran on the surface. An applied antibody to Immunoassay was GST (glutathione-s-transferase). The association and the dissociation time were 176 second and 215 second between GST and carbofuran. The total analysis time using surface plasmon resonance was 13 minutes including regeneration time, on the other hand HPLC and GC/MS was 2 hours usually. The minimum detection limit of a permissible amount for carbofuran in the country is 0.1 ppm. The immunoassay method using surface plasmon resonance was 0.002 ppm.

This study was initiated to understand the mechanism of selective toxicity of diazinon and carbofuran to killifish and loach. Conventional LC50 was calculated from fish test. IC50 with acetylcholinesterase activity was estimated using whole body and wet brain homogenate of the two fish species. Acetylcholinesterase activity of killifish was approximately twice as high as that of loach. The selective toxicity of diazinon to killifish and loach was partly (14 : 4) explained by the IC50 of diazoxon, a toxic metabolite of diazinon. IC50 of carbofuran also partly (14 : 3.4) contributed to the selectivity. These result suggested that the enzymatic method might be utilized as a screening tool for the chemicals affecting fish species of environmental concern with certain limitations which should be overcome in future studies.
This study was conducted to find out the biochemical or metabolic resistance mechanism of brown planthopper (BPH) to carbofuran. Differences between resistant ($LD_{50};\;20.3{\mu}g/g$) and susceptible strains($LD_{50};\;0.3{\mu}g/g$) were shown. The amounts of carbofuran metabolite, benzofuranol, and the origin, not developed by Thin Layer Chromatography, were much more in the susceptible strain. But the mother compound, carbofuran, was much more in the resistant strain. The tendencies of metabolism one and three hours after treatment were similar in both strains except for the amounts of metabolites described above. From the study, it is supposed that hydrolytic enzyme, esterase, changes its role from cleaving the esteric bond of carbofuran to making conjugates with carbofuran. This seems to be the main resistance mechanism of BPH to carbofuran. Oxidase and transferase may play little or no role in resistance mechanism. Oxidative and transferring enzymes gave no effects on the metabolism of carbofuran in the resistant strain compared with the susceptible strain.
