  • In this paper a self-tuning modified skyhook control for the semi-active suspension systems is investigated. The damping force generation mechanism is modeled We consider a 2 DOF time-varying quarter car model that permits parameter variations of the sprung mass and suspension spring coefficient. The modified skyhook control algorithm proposed in this paper requires only the measurement of body acceleration. The absolute velocity of the sprung mass and the relative velocity of the suspension deflection are estimated by using integral filters, according to parameter variations. The skyhook gains are designed in such a way that the body acceleration and the dynamic tire force are optimized. An ECU prototype will be discussed

  • 2 DOF half-car model with 6 semi-active suspension units is utilized to evaluate the tracked vehicle dynamic performance simulated by several suspension control algorithms. The target of this research is to improve the ride comfort to maintain operator's handling capability when the tracked vehicle travels fast on the rough road. The control algorithms for suspension systems, such as full state feedback active, full state feedback semi-active, sky-hook active, sky-hook semi-active, and on-off systems, are evaluated and analyzed in view point of ride comfort. The dynamic performances of vehicle are expressed and evaluated by vibratory characteristic evaluation curves, performance indices and frequency characteristic curves. The simulation results show that the performances of sky-hook algorithms for ride comfort nearly follow those of full state feedback algorithms and on-off algorithm is recommendatory when the vehicle runs relatively fast.

  • In this paper the effects of suspension design parameters on the steady-state cornering performance of vehicles are studied. To investigate the understeer characteristics of vehicles, steady-state cornering equatons are derived from a two-track model which is expanded from a simple one track model. The effects of the suspension design parameters as well as those of lateral load transfer are taken into consideration. To verify the equation, a skid pad test was carried out with a domestic passenger car. The design parameters of the vehicle are measured using a Suspension Parameter Measuring Device(SPMD). Based on these results, parameter studies are carried out to determine the effect of design parameters on the cornering performance of a vehicle, both in low and high acceleration region.

  • A functional suspension model is proposed as a kinematic describing function of the suspension that represents the relative wheel displacement in polynomial form in terms of the vertical displacement of the wheel center and steering rack displacement. The relative velocity and acceleration of the wheel is represented in terms of first and second derivatives of the kinematic describing function. The system equations of motion for the full vehicle dynamic model are systematically derived by using velocity transformation method of multi-body dynamics. The comparison of field test results and simulation results of the ADAMS/Car demonstrates the validity of the proposed functional suspension modeling method. This model is suitable for real-time vehicle dynamics analysis.

  • The vibrations of steering wheel are required to be reduced for convenient ride quality and good controllability. This phenomenon, vibration of steering wheel, is occured by interaction with suspension system, steering system, vehicle body, engine/transmission and tire complicately. But reviewing the current research activities, most researches are performed for the vibration analysis of steering wheel with a simple model, and mot easy to be applied to the variation of each component element connected with steering system as well as that of the steering system. In this study, suspension system and steering system are modelled by the T.L.H. coordinate system which is usually used by a passenger car maker. Also, rigid body motions of engine and elastic motions of vehicle body in the previous study are considered. Derive the equation of motion in 29 d.o.f. and the vibration of steering wheel is analyzed numerically and verify the midelling of steering system by comparison with test results for real car. And then, the optimal design values of the engine mount system obtained from the previous study are applied to the verified steering system model and investigate the effects of various engine mount design values on the vibration of steering wheel.

  • We have performed two kinds of experimental modal analyses fur a radial tire for passenger car under free-suspension. One is the modal analysis to obtain three-dimensional modes of tire using accelerometers and the other is the one to identify cavity resonance frequency using a pressure sensor. From the first analysis, we have obtained the three-dimensional natural modes, which makes it possible to grasp the features of the modes and to classify the vibrational modes into symmetric, non-symmetric, and antisymmetric modes in a simple way by using the experimental results. From the first and the second experimental analyses we have identified the cavity resonance frequency and its three-dimensional mode shape.

  • Springs for vehicle suspension control the vibration of a car and influence on the ridability, safety, and life of a car. In the paper, the computer aided design program has been developed, which design the leaf spring shape from the given specifications using basic theory and the expert's knowledge, and the design results are checked by the analysis theory in order to increase the accuracy, and feed back to the design input. For the purpose of easy use, this program consists of pull-down menu and interactive input mode. To prove the effectiveness of this program. two springs, of which one is symmetric, other asymmetric, are designed and analyzed, and the outputs are compared to the experiments. Considering the tolerance of the given specifications, the results are good.

  • The nonlinear characteristics of a damper is directly related to the car behavior and performance, both for handling and comfort. So considering the nonlinear characteristics of a damper such as hysteresis is important to analyze the dynamic characteristics of a car suspension. In this study, a mathematical nonlinear dynamic damper model based on experimental data is devised to estimate the nonlinear parameters of a NEW EF-SONATA damper using the least square method. The devised nonlinear dynamic damper model is used to analyze the reaction force of a NEW EF-SONATA suspension using ADAMS. The simulation results are good agreement with the experimental data than those of the linear model.

  • A semi-active suspension test system was designed and built for the experimental study. Vehicle parameters were estimated through tests and a quarter-car model was validated by comparing computer simulation results and laboratory test results. Alternative semi-active suspension control laws have been tested using the test system. Modulable damper used in this study is a "reverse" damper with 42 states which is controlled by a stepper motor. Experimental results have shown that semi-active suspensions have potential to improve ride quality of automobiles.tomobiles.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the parameters of the suspension system in railway rolling-stock for KT-23 type passenger vehicle. According to the results of simulation and the small scale vehicle test. Optimal condition was obtained for the stiffness ratio of the primary spring and secondary spring of the suspension system. When the stiffness ratio was Increased, the vortical vibration was increased on the car body for empty and weight car. The result of this study are stable to use of the optimum parameter of the ride duality of KT-23 type vehicle. Also, it is usefull to development of full scale vehicle dynamomer
