Development of Questionnaire for Automobile Seat Comfort Evaluation (자동차 시트의 안락도 평가를 위한 문항개발에 관한 연구)

  • The automotive seat comfort evaluation was to begin a key aspect in seat design. It depended largely on the basic mechanical aspect such as geometric parameters of seat, choice of suspension system and cushion material used. Until recently, seat comfort evaluation advanced to evaluate subjective sensitivity of human. The external literatures showed in the last decade, there have been very few attempts to establish and document automotive seat comfort evaluation. In 2006 Smith, D. proposed the statistically reliable tool in giving a numeric rating for set comfort and the tool was used in the many country. On the other hands, we, in Korea, had not the reliable tool for the automotive seat comfort evaluation. So that, we studied to develope the questionnaire for seat comfort evaluation based on Smith, D.(2006) and some studies. As a result, we developed 36 contents for the automotive seat comfort evaluation with the help of professional in Korean automotive industry. Here, 36 contents were identified as the dimensions that represent the human sensitivity and psychological feeling on comfortable seat. Also, we derived the priorities for the 36 contents by using analytic hierarchy process (AHP), based on the judgments of 30 experts and drivers. This study will help the designers and developers clarify the conceptual and abstract aspect of the design evaluation by proposing a more systematic and process-oriented method.

A study of the distribution of glass particles on patrol car seats (순찰차량 시트에서 유리조각의 분포 연구)

  • In the present study, the distribution of glass particles inside 10 patrol cars of Chungnam Province has been studied. The target seats were front seats (driver’s seat, passenger’s seat) and the back seat. The target areas were the bottom of the seat (seat contacting buttocks, back of the seat, and the corner of the seat (the bottom and back attached part)). The target areas were tape lifted with an adhesive tape. The glass particles adhering to the adhesive tape were examined and counted under a stereomicroscope. The total number of glass particles found was 679. Among them, 471 (driver’s seat 293, passenger seat 178) were collected from front seats, which are usually occupied by police officers. The majority of glass particles were under 0.49 mm size. The results show that the majority of glass particles can be found on the front seats, rather than on the back seat. There is a high probability that glass particles found on the front seat adhere to police officers, so that to get further transferred to the convict upon physical contact (secondary transfer). Thus, there is a risk of misinterpretation of the value of glass evidence in the course of forensic examinations. Hence, a separate method to prevent cross contamination has to be prepared by police authorities as soon as possible.

  • Recently, as consumer's claim fur car safety is increased, quality inspection method fur welding zone is strengthened. Therefore, from the methods that depend on welding zone bead shape size of seat frame in macrography or passive examination, the quality control by whole recording inspection is required. In this study, the system that is measuring automatically if worker checks welding bead fur quality inspection of seat frame is developed using LabVIEW. If the quality standard for the bead width and length of welding zone is inputted, the system measures automatically whether welding zone is bead length or bead width. Measured data is preserved by points and quality recording of welding zone is stored. The car seat きme welding zone is applied and experimented. The results gave good influence o9 the quality control of work efficiency.

  • Side bolster is a part of the vehicle seat that holds the passenger's body from the side to make it more stable when the passenger is seated in the seat. In this study, the structural and fatigue analyses of the side bolsters at a car seat were carried out with two models of A and B. The heavily loaded parts, the damage by fatigue at driving a car and the difference of durability due to the structure were examined and the distributions of stress and deformation, and the fatigue lives were seen. Also, the strength and durability were examined. This study result is thought to be devoted to decrease the fatigue damage and increase the fatigue life and durability according to the design of bolster. This result is able to improve the product by applying the design of automotive side bolster practically. And it is thought to be the advantage to apply this study result to the convergence research with esthetic sense.

  • Future vehicle must be both driver-friendly and able to adapt to changes in the road's conditions. The system is needed to adapt to both the driver and the circumstance for maximum convenience and safety. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes an algorithm for developing smart vehicles. In this paper, it is simulated to compare the performance of a normal car with that of the algorithm-implemented vehicle in a potential accident. Through the computer simulation, it proved that the algorithm-implemented vehicle automatically adjusted the mirrors and seat for the maximum comfort and driver's awareness of the circumstance.

Role of Side Impact Airbag in Order to Reduce Passenger Injury Value (승객 상해치 감소를 위한 측면 에어백의 역할)

  • In order to reduce passenger injuries in side collisions, car makers are developing a side impact airbag system while Volvo has already adopted. This study examines dummy injury reduction effect of a side airbag system using full car side impact simulation according to FMVSS 214 test procedure. The simulation result without side airbag shows a good correlation with test data. The folded airbag simulation is carried out to check main design factors. Through the simulation with side airbag module integrated in the seat frame, it is found that the side airbag system provides a substantially enhanced protection for car occupants in side collisions.

  • The design of an occupant protection equipment has been considered as the important process in developing a new car since the crash performance plays an important role on the market. The cost is increased when an unexpected real test is carried out in the proto-design stage. Thus, the exact prediction of a crash performance can reduce the number of full-car test. In this research, the robust design of an airbag system considering the frontal crash is suggested to predict the more reliable responses. On the contrary, most existing researches do not consider the uncertainties. The uncertainties treated in this research are the tolerances of the vent hole, the time to fire and the length of a strap in airbag and the tolerance of the load limiter load in seat belt. The Taguchi method is utilized to determine the robust optimum of each parameter

  • In previous fire accident of railway car, the fatality was relatively high by toxic gas poisoning cause of closed space. So the necessity of quantifying toxic gas in combustion gas was recognized and then, FT-IR spectroscopy was introduced for real-time analysis of mixed gases and stimulated analysis of the concentration of several gases. Thus, in this study, absorption bands using FT-IR were obtained by each component of combustion gases for interior materials of railway car such as flooring materials and moquette seat. And then the sample spectra were compared with the spectra of NO, $NO_2$, $SO_2$ reference gases, we could obtain some identical peaks of them.

Modeling of Automobile Suspension System for Analyzing Automobile Vibration (자동차 진동해석을 위한 자동차 현가계의 모델링)

  • As automobile technology advances, a smoother ride with less noise is desired. In order to achieve these purposes, a study on the vibration and noise produced by a moving automobile was carried out and a model for tire vibration characteristics which influence the ride performance was developed. The model was verified through simulations and experiments. The developed model was then applied to a half car model and automobile vibrations were analyzed. The effects of tire design parameters on the automobile vibration energy were investigated. The results from laboratory and field tests confirm the validity of the analytical model. The 17-DOF half-car model was built to analyze automobile vibration. The characteristics of the nonlinear model for a shock absorber were applied to this model. The results from the present 17-DOF half car model incorporating the analytical tire model with tire design parameters, were compared with the 5-DOF half car model where the tire was modeled with linear springs. The results of the 17-DOF model are close to the experimental results. Using the 17-DOF model, the influence of tire design parameter were considered. According to the analysis results, the vibrations at seat/body/wheel were predicted by simulation and experiment.

A Basic Study on Plastic Suspension System for Automotive Seat under Consideration of Body Pressure Distribution (체압 분포를 고려한 자동차 시트용 플라스틱 서스펜션에 대한 기초적 연구)

  • This study investigates the plastic suspension assembly which is installed on inside of vehicle seat and support passenger's back to supply the comfortable ride performance. It aims to develop the structural design in order to support driver's back uniformly and assemble seat back frame with plastic suspension effectively. The part of suspension is designed by considering the body pressure distribution of driver and it has the same size as the practical model on simulation analysis. It is confirmed that the analysis result of plastic suspension approaches the practical measured values and the better body pressure distribution can be obtained as compared with the existing wire type.
