  • The laser welding of the car body and components has been spread in the automotive industry. The Nd:YAG laser welding system could be used in 3D welding with robot. However, this system cannot efficiently reduce the welding cycle time according to various welding sequences because the robot's moving time is same that of the resistant spot welding system. But the remote welding system with high power $CO_2$ laser and scanner makes it possible welding cycle time much faster than the robot laser welding system. In the $CO_2$ laser remote welding system, laser beam can be rapidly transferred to a workpiece by moving mirrors of scanner system. So, it makes reducing the cycle time of welding process and shaping various welding patterns easily. Therefore, in this paper, the characteristic of weld strength according to patterns of weld bead on $CO_2$ laser welding was investigated. Also, the relationship between shape of weld bead and value of tensile load was studied. Finally, the optimum remote welding condition for car bumper was investigated.

  • In this paper, we propose a car sealing monitoring system combined with ICT Technology. The automobile sealer is an adhesive used to bond inner and outer panels of doors, hoods and trunks of an automobile body. The proposed car sealer monitoring system is a system that can accurately and automatically inspect the condition of the automobile sealer coating process in the general often factory production line where the lighting change is very severe. The sealer inspection module checks the state of the applied sealer using an area scan camera. The vision inspection algorithm is adaptive to various lighting environments to determine whether the sealer is defective or not. The captured images and test results are configured to send the task results to the task manager in real-time as a smartphone app. Vision inspection algorithms in the plant outdoors are very vulnerable to time-varying external light sources and by configuring a monitoring system based on smart mobile equipment, it is possible to perform production monitoring regardless of time and place. The applicability of this method was verified by applying it to an actual automotive sealer application process.

  • The introduction of a diesel engine into the passenger car and light duty applications in the United States involves significant technical challenges for the automotive makers. This paper describes the SCR System optimization procedure for such a diesel engine application to meet Tier2 Bin5 emission regulation. A urea SCR system, a representative $NO_x$ reduction after-treatment technique, is applied to a 3.0 liter diesel engine. To achieve the maximum $NO_x$ reduction performance, the exhaust system layout was optimized using series of the computational fluid dynamics and the urea distribution uniformity test. Furthermore a comprehensive simulation model for the key factors influencing $NO_x$ reduction performance was developed and embedded in the Simulink/Matlab environment. This model was then applied to the urea SCR system and played a key role to shorten the time needed for SCR control parameter calibration. The potential of a urea SCR system for reducing diesel $NO_x$ emission is shown for FTP75 and US06 emission standard test cycle.

  • This paper presents the correlation between psychological and physiological acoustics for the automotive acceleration sound. The research purpose of this paper is to evaluate the sound quality of acceleration sound of a passenger car based EEG signal. The previous method for the objective evaluation of sound quality is to use sound metrics based on psychological acoustics. This method uses not only psychological acoustics but also physiological acoustics. For this work, the sounds of 7 premium passenger cars are recorded and evaluated subjectively by 33 people. The correlation between the subjective rating and sound metrics is calculated based on physiological acoustics. Finally the correlation between the subjective rating and the EEG signal measured on the brain is also calculated. Throughout these results the new evaluation system for the sound quality on the automotive acceleration sound of a passenger car has been developed based on bio-signal.

  • Objective: This paper studies the method of measuring whole-body vibration in the car and terms associated. Background: Human exposure to vibration can be broadly classified as localized and whole-body vibration. The whole-body vibration affects the entire body of the exposed person. It is mainly transmitted through the seat surfaces, backrests, and through the floor to an individual sitting in the vehicle. It can affect the comfort, performance, and health of individuals. Method: Human responses to whole-body vibration can be evaluated by two main standards such as ISO 2631 and BS 6841. The vibration is measured at 8 axes - three translations at feet, 3 translations of hip and two translations of back proposed by Griffin. B&K's sensors used in this study are the 3-axes translational acceleration sensor to measure the translational accelerations at the hip, back and foot. Results: The parameters associated with the whole-body vibration in the car are frequency weightings, frequency weighted root-mean-square, vibration dose values, maximum transient vibration value, seat effective amplitude transmissibility, ride values and ride comfort. Conclusion: Studied the evaluating methods of vibration exposure and ride comfort. Application: Evaluation of whole-body vibration in the car.

  • Recently, various in-vehicle networks have been developed respectively in order to accomplish their own purposes such as CAN and MOST. Especially, the MOST network is usually adapted to provide entertainment service. The car navigation system is also widely used for guiding driving paths to driver. The position for the navigation system is usually acquired by GPS technology. However, the GPS technique has two serious problems. The first is unavailability in urban canyons. The second is inherent positional error rate. The problems have been studied in many literatures. However, the second still leads to incorrect locational information in some area, especially parallel roads. This paper proposes a performance tuning method of image matching algorithm for the car navigation system. The method utilizes images obtained from in-vehicle MOST network and a real-time image matching algorithm which determines the direction of moving vehicle in parallel section of road. In order to accuracy improvement of image matching algorithm, three conditions are applied. The experimental tests show that the proposed system increases the accuracy.

  • In this paper, the safety for passengers of composite car-body against lightning strikes was analyzed by the application of an impulse generator which can produce impulse current up to 50 kA with 8/$20{\mu}s$ waveform. Potential difference on inside surface of the car-body was measured as a safety parameter for the passengers against lightning strikes. The potential difference between 20 em distant was 175 V at 37.67 kA, and it corresponds to 875 V between 1 m distant. The amount of charge flowing a passenger at 100 kA impulse current can be estimated to $0.31\;mA{\cdot}s$. This is much less than the limit amount of charge for human body, $30\;mA{\cdot}s$ which is presented by Koeppen and Osypka.
