The preservation of historic masonry-arch railway bridges is of paramount importance due to their economic benefits. These bridges which belong to past centuries may nowadays be expected to carry loads higher than those for which they were designed. Such an increase in loads may be because of increase in transportation speed or in the capacity of freight-wagons. Anyway, adequate increase in their load-carrying-capacity through structural-strengthening is required. Moreover, the increasing costs of material/construction urge engineers to optimize their designs to obtain the minimum-cost one. This paper proposes a novel numerical optimization method to minimize the costs associated with strengthening of masonry-arch railway bridges. To do so, the stress/displacement responses of Sahand-Goltappeh bridge are assessed under ordinary train pass as a case study. For this aim, 3D-Finite-Element-Model is created and calibrated using experimental test results. Then, it is strengthened such that following goals are achieved simultaneously: (1) the load-carrying-capacity of the bridge is increased; (2) the structural response of the bridge is reduced to a certain limit; and, (3) the costs needed for such strengthening are minimized as far as possible. The results of the case study demonstrate the applicability/superiority of the proposed approach. Some economic measures are also recommended to further reduce the total strengthening cost.
Intersection control has dual-purposes; increasing capacity and reducing delay. The primary concern of efficient intersection control under oversaturated condition as in Korea is to increase capacity. Prevailing intersection operation technique permits thru traffic to utilize left turn lane, because the intersection without left turn pocket has left turn signal interval. In this situation, it seems not to be valid to calculate capacity, delay, and signal timings by conventional methods. By critical lane technique, capacity increases as cycle length increases. However, when thru traffic utilize LT lane, the capacity varies according to LT volume, LT interval as well as cycle length, which implies that specific cycle length and LT interval exist to maximize capacity for given LT volume. The study is designed is designed to calculate utilization factors of LT lane for thru traffic and capacities, and identify signal timings to yield maximum capacity. The experimental design involved has 3 variables; 1)LT volumes at each approach(20-300 vph), 2)cycle lengths (60-220 sec), and 3)LT intervals(2.6-42 sec) for one scenario of isolated intersection crossing two 6-lanes streets. For LT volume of 50-150 vph, capacity calculated by using the utilization factor is about 25% higher than that by critical lane method. The range of optimum cycle length to yield maximum capapcity for LT volume less than 120 vph is 140-180 sec, and increases as LT volume increases. The optimum LT interval to yield maximum capacity is longer than the intrval necessary to accommodate LT volume at saturation flow rate.
Recently, the social and environmental functions of nature river are important due to the increase of expectation for river restoration. So it should be considered the effect of vegetation affecting the conveyance capacity and hydraulic resistance. However, it has not yet proposed a objective standard and modeling method to estimate the effect of conveyance capacity according to vegetaion distribution in the watercourse such as water level or velocity. Therefore, this study simulates the variations of water level and velocity using 3-dimensional hydrodynamic model, EFDC, to consider a conveyance capacity in downstream of the Soyang Reservoir. The simulation results were validated using statistical index such as F-test and T-test. As results, the water level rises about 0.01 to 0.47m and velocity difference are about -0.95m/s to 0.23m/s.
To develop high performance nickel-iron secondary battery, the characteristics of charge-discharge reaction of iron electrode were examined by cyclic voltammetry technique, SEM and XRD analysis. The capacity of the test electrodes was determined by the constant current charge-discharge method. It was found that the temperature and concentration of electrolyte were the major determinant factors of electrode capacity, and especially the 1st discharge capacity was increased with the increase of temperature. The effect of fore forming agent on the electrode capacity was negligible. The electrode capacity was above 350 ㎃h/g(36% utility) at 0.25C discharge rate. The stability of electrode was very good, but the activation occurred slowly.
In a distributed streaming system using an advanced coding scheme that encodes a video into multiple substreams, the capacity of the system depends on the amount of contribution of participating peers. Thus, an incentive mechanism for peers to contribute voluntarily is needed to increase system capacity. In addition, since peers are not only a provider but also a consumer in the system (i.e. prosumer), the overall capacity of the system must be allocated fairly among the peers while it must be allocated in a way that can maximize the net quality of experience of peers to increase system efficiency. In this paper, we propose a substream allocation method to solve the problems taking an optimization approach. Unlike the other optimization approaches, the proposed method is verified quantitatively in a simulation study that it can use the capacity of video streaming system efficiently while allocating fair amount of substreams among peers because it considers explicitly the prosumer characteristics of peers.
Small-cells in heterogeneous networks are one of the important technologies to increase the coverage and capacity in 5G cellular networks. However, due to the randomly arranged small-cells, co-tier and cross-tier interference increase, deteriorating the system performance of the network. In order to manage the interference, some channel management methods use fractional frequency reuse(FFR) that divides the cell coverage into the inner region(IR) and outer region(OR) based on the distance from the macro base station(MBS). However, since it is impossible to properly measure the distance in the method with FFR, we propose a new interference aware FFR(IA-FFR) method to enhance the system performance. That is, the proposed IA-FFR method divides the MUEs and SBSs into the IR and OR groups based on the signal to interference plus noise ratio(SINR) of macro user equipments(MUEs) and received signals strength of small-cell base stations(SBSs) from the MBS, respectively, and then dynamically assigns subchannels to MUEs and small-cell user equipments. As a result, the proposed IA-FFR method outperforms other methods in terms of the system capacity and outage probability.

We investigated the operating characteristics of the hybrid-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) according to the inductance of secondary windings. The hybrid type SFCL consists of a transformer that has a primary winding and a secondary winding with serially connected $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ (YBCO) films. The resistive-type SFCL has difficulty when it comes to raising the capacity of the SFCL due to slight differences of critical current densities between units and structure of the SFCL. The hybrid-type SFCL with closed-loop is able to achieve capacity increase through the electrical isolation and reduction of the inductance of the secondary winding with a superconducting element of the same critical current. On the other hand, the current limiting characteristics were nearly identical in the hybrid-type SFCL with open-loop compared to closed-loop, but quench time was longer than the hybrid-type SFCL with closed-loop. We confirmed that the capacity of the SFCL was increased effectively by the reduced inductance of the secondary winding. In addition, the power burden of the system also could be lowered by reducing the inductance of secondary winding.

We propose an approximation of the M/G/1 system with finite workload capacity, where those customers whose admission to the system would increase the workload beyond a prespecified finite capacity limit are not accepted. Our approximation method is based on the idea that the service time of a customer in the M/G/1 system can be approximated as the sum of service times of a batch of customers in the $M^X/d/1$ system where the deterministic service time d is small enough. That is, the original service time is discretized and approximated by the batch size. We exemplified our method by obtaining the average workload of the M/M/1 system by means of the $M^X/d/1$ system, where the batch size is geometric. In addition, the approximate blocking probabilities of the M/M/1 and $M/E_k/1$ system with finite workload capacities are sought. The proposed method turns out to give a good approximation, which is compared with a simulation.
In this study, a new empirical method is presented to obtain Dynamic Increase Factor (DIF) in nonlinear static analysis of structures against sudden removal of a gravity load-bearing element. In this method, DIF is defined as a function of minimum ratio of difference between maximum moment capacity ($M_u$) and moment demand ($M_d$) to plastic moment capacity ($M_p$) under unamplified gravity loads of elements. This function determines the residual strength of a damaged building before amplified gravity loads. For each column removal location, a nonlinear dynamic analysis and a step-by-step nonlinear static analysis are carried out and the modified empirical DIF formulas are derived, which correspond to the ratio min $[(M_u-M_d)/M_p]$ of beams in the bays immediately adjacent to the removed column, and at all floors above it. Therefore, the new DIF can be used with nonlinear static analysis instead of nonlinear dynamic analysis to assess the progressive collapse potential of a moment frame structure. The proposed DIF formulas can estimate the real residual strength of a structure based on critical member.
This work analyzes the behaviors of aerated lubricant in the gap between con-rod bearing and journal. It is assumed that the film formation with aerated lubricant is influenced by the two major factors. One is the density characteristics of the lubricant due to the volume change of lubricant for the formation of bubbles and the other is the viscosity characteristics of the lubricant due to the surface tension of the bubble in the lubricant. These two major factors surprisingly increase the load capacity in some ranges of bubble sizes and densities. Modified Reynolds' equation is developed for the computation of fluid film pressure with the effects of aeration ratio in the lubricant. From the calculated load capacity by solving modified Reynolds' equation, journal locus is computed with Mobility method after comparing it with the applied load at each time step. The differences of journal orbits between aerated and pure lubricants are shown in the computed results.
