  • In this paper, we propose a skin lesion detection to develop the system of fluorescence image analysis to identify the fluorescence of topical methyl aminolevulinate(MAL) idduced PpIX in patients with BCC accurately. By fluorescence image analysis we define the border between tumo and tumor-free areas on fluorescence image after topical application of MAL ointment. We excised both the tumor and peri-tumoral areas widely from the 10 patients with BCC, and divided tissue samples into 3 area, such as tumor area, suspected tumor area, tumor-free area, respectively. Our proposed method migt play a role as an adjunctive tool to define the border between tumor and tumor-free areas for Mohs' micrographic surgery.

  • Raman spectroscopy has strong potential for providing noninvasive dermatological diagnosis of skin cancer. In this study, we investigated two classification methods with maximum a posteriori (MAP) probability and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) classification. The classification framework consists of preprocessing of Raman spectra, feature extraction, and classification. In the preprocessing step, a simple windowing method is proposed to obtain robust features. Classification results with MLP involving 216 spectra preprocessed with the proposed method gave 97.3% sensitivity, which is very promising results for automatic Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) detection.

  • Humans have a long history of asbestos use. There are reports from the Roman era, of asbestos victims among the slaves who worked in asbestos mines. The fact that asbestos can induce lung cancer and mesothelioma was verified epidemiologically in the 1960s. Asbestos related diseases are predominantly occupational in nature but can be caused by environmental exposure. Environmental mesothelioma is mainly associated with tremolite asbestos and this information comes from many countries including Turkey, Greece, Corsica, New Caledonia and Cyprus. In 1993, the first case of mesothelioma in Korea was reported in an asbestos textile worker. Recently, some asbestos disease victims who lived near an asbestos factory have their cases before the courts. A series of recent asbestos-related events in Korea, for example, the shocking revelation of asbestos containing talc in baby powders have caused the general public to become aware of the health risks of asbestos exposure. Asbestos related diseases are characterized by a long latency period, especially, mesothelioma which has no threshold of safety. Hence the best strategy for preventing asbestos related diseases is to decrease asbestos exposure levels to as low as possible.

  • Recently, after reviewing the online journal, Journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, we found a recently published original article by Manzano et al., entitled, "Retrospective study of osteoradionecrosis in the jaws of patients with head and neck cancer". Although this original article was well written and provided a great deal of information regarding osteoradionecrosis in the jaws, we would like to add a few additional recommendations based on our small concerns and recently updated articles.

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease of unknown etiology limited to the large intestine. The disease is prevalent in industrial societies and is associated with specific ethnic populations. A number of murine models, each focused on distinct aspects of the disease process, were developed over the past 20 years to further our understanding of the pathogenesis of UC. These models have been and remain our best resource for the study of the disorder as a result of their homology to human UC and the ease in which they can be manipulated and examined. This review examines and distills what has been learned from these models and how this information is related back to human UC.

  • Recent years have seen an explosion of new knowledge defining the molecular events that are critical for development and activation of immune cells. Much of this new information has come from a careful molecular dissection of key signal transduction pathways that are initiated when immune cell receptors are engaged. In addition to the receptors themselves and critical effector molecules, these signaling pathways depend on adapters, proteins that have no intrinsic effector function but serve instead as scaffolds to nucleate multimolecular complexes. This review summarizes some of what has been learned about one such adapter protein, SH2 domain-containing leukocyte phosphoprotein of 76 kDa (SLP-76), and how it regulates and integrates signals after engagement of immunoreceptors and integrins on various immune cell lineages.

  • Esophageal fistulas may occur in an advanced stage or as a potentially life-threatening complication of treatment. They can be divided into esophageal-respiratory and esophageal-aorta fistulas. The diagnosis is confirmed with fluoroscopy using dilute barium oral contrast, followed by thin-section computed tomography, which defines the precise location and extent of the fistula. Flexible esophagoscopy and bronchoscopy are required for confirmation and anatomic assessment of the suspected fistula and provide additional information for treatment planning. Contamination is traditionally controlled by surgical exclusion, along with a jejunal feeding tube. Currently, fully covered self-expanding metal stents are the primary treatment option.

  • This paper proposes an efficient feature extraction of the image data using nonlinear principal component analysis neural networks of a new learning algorithm. The proposed method is a learning algorithm with momentum for reflecting the past trends. It is to get the better performance by restraining an oscillation due to converge the global optimum. The proposed algorithm has been applied to the cancer image of $256{\times}256$ pixels and the coin image of $128{\times}128$ pixels respectively. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better performances of the convergence and the nonlinear feature extraction, in comparison with those using the backpropagation and the conventional nonlinear PCA neural networks.

  • Based on the potential cancer chemoprebentive activity of resveratrol, a trihydroxystilbene with the induction of quinone reductase activeity this study was designed to determine if stilbene-related compounds were inducers of phase ll detoxifying metabolic enzyme quinone reductase (QR) in the mouse hepatoma Hepa 1c1c7 cells. Among the thirteen compounds tested, several compounds including 3,4,5,3',5'-pentamethoxy-trans-stibene were found to potentially induce QR activity in this cell line. In addition, substitution with 3-thiofurane ring instead of phenyl ring in the stilbene skeleton also exhibited potential induction of QR activity. This result will give primary information to design the potential inducers of QR activity in the stilbene analogs.
