On live performance such as play and musical, various stage effects are utilized to attract a diverse audience. These stage effects include traditional direction techniques, striking display effects and all kinds of ways of being immersed in the scene. In this paper, we propose a novel digital visual effects(digilog) for controlling the surface texture of objects based on spatial augmented reality. For this purpose, we present a method of neutralizing the appearance of an arbitrary object using a projector-camera system. To make the object appear as if it is a transparent object by projecting a carefully determined compensation image onto the surface of objects, we use the homography method for a simple and effective off-line projector-camera calibration. The successful uses of the basic algorithm of Smart Projector for measuring radiometric parameters led us believe that this method may be used for temporal variation of plays and musicals.

In a real scenario, radiometric change has frequently occurred in the stereo image acquisition process using multiple cameras with geometric characteristics or moving a single camera because it has different camera parameters and illumination change. Conventional stereo matching algorithms have a difficulty in finding correct corresponding points because it is assumed that corresponding pixels have similar color values. In this paper, we present a new method based on the local descriptor reflecting intensity, gradient and texture information. Furthermore, an adaptive weight for local descriptor based on the entropy is applied to estimate correct corresponding points under radiometric variation. The proposed method is tested on Middlebury datasets with radiometric changes, and compared with state-of-the-art algorithms. Experimental result shows that the proposed scheme outperforms other comparison algorithms around 5% less matching error on average.
Color correction between two or multiple images is very crucial for the development of subsequent algorithms and stereoscopic 3D camera system. Even though various color correction methods are proposed recently, there are few methods for measuring the performance of these methods. In addition, when two images have view variation by camera positions, previous methods for the performance measurement may not be appropriate. In this paper, we propose a method of measuring color difference between corresponding images for color correction. This method finds matching points that have the same colors between two scenes to consider the view variation by correspondence searches. Then, we calculate statistics from neighbor regions of these matching points to measure color difference. From this approach, we can consider misalignment of corresponding points contrary to conventional geometric transformation by a single homography. To handle the case that matching points cannot cover the whole regions, we calculate statistics of color difference from the whole image regions. Finally, the color difference is computed by the weighted summation between correspondence based and the whole region based approaches. This weight is determined by calculating the ratio of occupying regions by correspondence based color comparison.
Acquisition of reliable depth maps is a critical requirement in many applications such as 3D videos and free-viewpoint TV. Depth information can be obtained from the object directly using physical sensors, such as infrared ray (IR) sensors. Recently, Time-of-Flight (ToF) range camera including KINECT depth camera became popular alternatives for dense depth sensing. Although ToF cameras can capture depth information for object in real time, but are noisy and subject to low resolutions. Recently, filter-based depth up-sampling algorithms such as joint bilateral upsampling (JBU) and noise-aware filter for depth up-sampling (NAFDU) have been proposed to get high quality depth information. However, these methods often lead to texture copying in the upsampled depth map. To overcome this limitation, we formulate a convex optimization problem using higher order regularization for depth map upsampling. We decrease the texture copying problem of the upsampled depth map by using edge weighting term that chosen by the edge information. Experimental results have shown that our scheme produced more reliable depth maps compared with previous methods.

A tidal sandshoal, called 'Puldeung' in the Daeijackdo Marine Protected Area(DMPA), is facing erosion due to sand mining in the nearby coastal region. To monitor the morphologic change and erosion of Puldeung, a camera monitoring system was established at the top of Song-Ee Mountain in Daeijack Island. The system consists of 2 Cannon digital cameras, Eye-fi memory card/Long-Term Evolution wireless network, and solar power supply. The acquired camera images were analyzed to obtain the area of Puldeung by the following methods: geometric correction of image, identification of shoreline, areal measurement of Puldeung and its error estimation. To compare the Puldeung area with previously measured area of 1.79 km2 at tidal height of 137 cm in 2008 and of 1.59 km2 at tidal height of 148 cm in 2010, we selected images with same tidal heights. The Puldeung area was 1.37 and 1.23 km2 at the tidal height of 137 and 148 cm, respectively. The erosion at DMPA is very severe and thus it is imperative to initiate the morphodynamical study on the seasonal variation and long-term evolution of Puldeung as well as the causes and measures of Puldeung erosion.

Gait is defined as a manner or characteristics of walking. Recently, the study on extracting features of the gait to identify the individual has been progressed actively, within the computer vision community. Even if the camera is fixed, gait features extracted from images are varied according to the direction of walking. In this paper, we propose the method which compensates for the drawback of the gait recognition which is dependant on the direction. First, we search a direction of walking and estimate the planar homography with simple operations. Through synthesizing canonical viewed images by using the estimated homography, viewpoint variation by the direction of walking is compensated. In this paper, we segment gait silhouette into sub-regions and use averaged feature and its variation of each region to recognition experiment. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust for directional variation of the gait.

Deep UBVI and $H{\alpha}$ photometry of the ${\eta}$ Carina nebula, one of the brightest nebulae on the sky, was obtained with the CTIO 4m telescope and MOSAIC II CCD Camera to determine the initial mass function down to low-mass (~1 M¤) stars. We modified the spatial variation coefficients in transformation relations of the MOSAIC II CCD. From the cross-identification of optical sources with previous surveys in X-ray, near-infrared, and mid-infrared, a clear PMS sequence is revealed in the optical color-magnitude diagrams down to V=23 mag. Our previous SSO 1m UBVI data for Trumpler 14 (Tr 14) and Trumpler 16 (Tr 16) region, and additional SSO 1m UBVI data for Trumpler 15 (Tr 15) region were combined with the CTIO 4m data to re-examine the reddening law and distance of the young open clusters in the ${\eta}$ Carina nebula. From the new photometric data for Tr 15 region, we report that RV[=AV/E(B-V)], the total-to-selective extinction ratio, decreases from southern part of the nebula (Tr 14 and Tr 16) to northern part (Tr 15) in our field of view.
We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of the globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4636 in the Virgo cluster. The photometry of the GCs is based on HST/WFPC2 images for the inner region and deep, wide field Washington $CT_1$ CCD images for the outer region. We investigated the color distribution, the radial number density profile, the spatial distribution, and the mean color of the bright blue GCs about the GCs in NGC 4636. We obtained spectra of the GC candidates in NGC 4636 using the Multi-Object Spectroscopy (MOS) mode of Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) on the SUBARU 8.2m Telescope. We measured the velocities for 105 GCs in NGC 4636. Using the 238 GCs obtained from combining our results with data in the literature, we investigated the kinematics of the GC system of NGC 4636: the rotation, the velocity dispersion, the radial variation, and the orbit. We also investigated the distribution and the radial variation of the metallicities, ages, and alpha-elements of the GCs in NGC 4636 derived using the absorption lines. We compared the GC kinematics of NGC 4636 with those of other six gEs, finding that the kinematic properties of the GCs are diverse among gEs. We found several correlations between the kinematics of the GCs and the global parameters of their host galaxies. Finally we discuss the implication of the results for the formation models of the GC system in gEs, and suggest a mixture scenario for the origin of the GCs in gEs.
In the present study, spread-recoil behavior of a drop of shear-thinning liquid (xanthan solution) on a dry wall (polished stainless-steel plate) was examined and compared with that of Newtonian liquid (glycerin solution). Nine different kinds of xanthan and glycerin solutions were tested, including three pairs of xanthan and glycerin solutions, each having the same viscosity in low shear rate region ($10^{-2}-10^0\;l/s$). The drop behavior was visualized and recorded using a CCD camera. The maximum diameter and the spreading velocity of the xanthan drops turned out to be significantly larger and the time to reach their final shape was much shorter compared to the cases with the glycerin solutions, due to the smaller viscous dissipation resulted from lower viscosity in the higher shear rate region (>$10^0\;l/s$). As a result, the maximum diameters were measured to be larger than the predicted values based on the model proposed for Newtonian liquids, and the deviation was more pronounced with the solution with the larger viscosity variation. Consequently, viscosity variation with the shear rate was found to be a dominant factor governing the spread-recoil behavior of shear-thinning drops.

In this paper, we propose an efficient method that is tracking an object in real time using particle filter and adaptive observation model. When tracking object, it happens object shape variation by camera or object movement in variety environments. The traditional method has an error of tracking from these variation, because it has fixed observation model about the selected object by the user in the initial frame. In order to overcome these problems, we propose a method that updates the observation model by calculating the similarity between the used observation model and the eight-way of edge model from the current position. If the similarity is higher than the threshold value, tracking the object using updated observation model to reset observation model. On the contrary to this, the algorithm which consists of a process is to maintain the used observation model. Finally, this paper demonstrates the performance of the stable tracking through comparison with the traditional method by using a number of experimental data.
