  • A selective method for the determination of iron(III) ion with a sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) modified glassy carbon electrode was proposed. It was based on the electrostatic attraction and complexation of the SDS modifier, $(DS^-)_n-Fe^{3+}$. The determination of iron(III) ion was performed by a differential pulse voltammetry(DPV), and the reduction peak potential of $(DS^-)_n-Fe^{3+}$ was +0.466(${\pm}0.002$)V vs. Ag/AgCl. For the determination of iron(III) ion, a linear calibration curve was obtained within the iron(III) ion concentration range of $0.50{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}10{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$, and the detection limit was $0.14{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$. $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Mn^{2+}$ showed little or no effect on the determination of iron(III) ion, respectively. But, ion such as each $CN^- $ and $SCN^-$ interfered seriously.

  • In this study, a system to measure continuously the fuel concentration in a steady flow rig on the basis of Rayleigh scattering is presented. The system can be employed to measure both the temporal and the spatial distribution. Also, it is possible to calibrate the system for the measurement of accurate absolute concentration. Firstly, the system was tested at a calibration chamber for the determination of scattering cross section from propane, butane, acetylene, Freon-12 and Genetron 143a. After this, the system was adapted to a steady flow rig to measure the temporal and spatial fuel concentration. The rig is composed of cylinder head, intake manifold, injector, and transparent cylinder which can simulate internal combustion engine. To cope with the interference of Mie scattering, which is main obstacle of the measuring concentration with Rayleigh scattering, a hardware filter was installed for reducing the number density of particles. Furthermore a software filter was developed, which is based on the rise time and the time constant of the photomultiplier-amplifier system. In addition, background noisy was reduced by adjusting the optical array and applying the pin hall and beam trap. The results show that LRS can provide useful information about concentration field and the software filter is very effective method to remove Mie interference.

  • Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a recently developed analytical technique that is based upon the measurement of emission lines generated by atomic species close to the surface of the sample, thus allowing their chemical detection, identification and quantification. With powerful advantages of LIBS compared to the conventional analytical methodology, this technique can be applied in the detection of heavy metals in the field. LIBS allows the rapid analysis by avoiding laborious chemical steps. LES have already been applied for the determination of element concentration in a wide range of materials in the solid, liquid and gaseous phase with simplicity of the instrument and diversity of the analytical application. These feasibility of rapid multi elemental analysis are appealing proprieties for the in-situ analytical technique in geochemical investigation, exploration and environmental analysis. There remain still some limitations to be solved for LIBS to be applied in soil environment as an in-situ analytical technology. We would like to provide the basic principle related to the plasma formation and laser-induced breakdown of sample materials. In addition, the matrix effect, laser properties and the various factors affecting on the analytical signal of LIBS was dealt with to enhance understanding of LIBS through literature review. Ultimately, it was investigated the feasibility of LIBS application in soil environment monitoring by considering the basic idea to enhance the data quality of LIBS including the calibration method for the various effects on the analytical signal of LIBS.

  • This study was performed to compare international analytical methods of bromate and applied to determine bromate in bottled mineral water in Korea. Bromate in bottled mineral water was eluted by 10~50 mM potassium hydroxide (KOH) and determined by ion chromatograph-suppressed conductivity detector (ICCD). Sample was purified with on guard Ba-, Ag- and H-cartridges and $0.2\;{\mu}m$ membrane filter. The method detection limit (MDL) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of bromate were 0.1 and $0.5\;{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The calibration curve showed good lineality above 0.9998 in the ranges of the $0.5\sim40\;{\mu}g/L$. Bromate from 33 samples among total 157 bottled mineral water samples was detected in the concentration range of $0.5\sim6.5\;{\mu}g/L$. The detected concentrations were within bottled mineral water quality criteria ($10\;{\mu}g/L$) in Korea.

  • A method was presented for determination of bisphenol F(BPF), bisphenol A(BPA), bisphenol F diglycidyl ether(BFDGE) and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether(BADGE) in 3 aqueous-based food simulants (water, 4% acetic acid, 20% ethanol) by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography(RP-HPLC)with fluorescence detection and gas chromatography with mass selective detection(GC/MSD). All the calibration lines in the range of $5{\sim}800\;{\mu}g/L$ had correlation coefficients greater than 0.9998 and detection limits of less than $1.2\;{\mu}g$ bisphenols/L. Precision at $200\;{\mu}g/L$ was under 3.1%. Recoveries of bisphenols simultaneously spiked to aqueous food simulants exceeded 95% for BPF and BPA but about 80% for BFDGE and BADGE. However, recoveris of BFDGE and BPADGE respectively spiked increased upto 95%. Detection limits in recovery test were less than $0.40\;{\mu}g$ bisphenols/L. In migration test bisphenols were determined by RP-HPLC coupled with confirmation by GC/MSD. Can coatings of epoxy phenol, modified epoxy, epoxy ester phenol and thermoset vinyl were exposed to the 3 aqueous food simulants. BPF, BFDGE and BADGE were not detected in all the can coatings but BPA was detected in 4% acetic acid and 20% ethanol in all the can coatings except modified epoxy.

  • The application of electrical resistivity, which is related to charge mobility, has increased in the field of geotechnical engineering for the detection of underground cavern, faults and subsurface pollution level. The purpose of this study is to investigate the variation of electrical resistivity due to temperature change. Sand-silt mixture specimens prepared in the square freezing nylon cell are frozen in the frozen chamber. Four electrodes are attached on the four side walls of the freezing cell for the measurement of electrical resistance during temperature change. Electrical resistances of sand-silt mixtures with different degrees of saturation (0%, 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, 60% and 100%) are measured as the temperature of specimens decrease from $20^{\circ}C$ to $-10^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistances determined by Ohm's law are transformed into the electrical resistivity by calibration. Experimental results show that the higher degree of saturation, the lower electrical resistivity at $20^{\circ}C$. Electrical resistivity gradually increases as the temperature decrease from $20^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$. For the specimens with the degree of saturation of 15% or higer, electrical resistivity dramatically changes near the temperature of $0^{\circ}C$. In addition, very high electrical resistivity is observed regardless of the degree of saturation if the specimens are frozen. This study provides the fundamental information of electrical resistivity according to the soil freezing and temperature change demonstrates that electrical resistivity be a practical method for frozen soil investigation.

  • An imaging plate(IP) detector, a two-dimensional digital radiation detector that can acquire image of radioactivity distribution in a sample, has been applied in many fields; for industrial radiography, medical diagnosis, X-ray diffraction test, etc. In this study, the possibility of IP detector to be used lot measuring radioactivity of sample is explored using its high sensitivity, higher spatial resolution, wider dynamic range and screen uniformity for several kinds radiations. First, the IP detector is applied to measure the surface uniformity for area source. Surface uniformity is measured rapidly and nondestructively by measuring the radioactivity distribution of common standard area source$(^{241}Am)$. Next, the IP is employed to study the possibility of measuring an extremely low-level activity of environmental sample. For this study the screen uniformity, shield effect of background radiation, linear dynamic range and fading effect of the IP detector is investigated. The potato, banana, radish and carrot samples are chosen to measure ultra low-level activity of $^{40}K$ isotope. The efficiency calibration of IP detector is carried out using the standard source.

  • Electrode systems: a protrusion on conductor (POC), a protrusion on enclosure (POE), a crack in epoxy plate and a free particle (FP) were fabricated to simulate insulation defects in a gas insulated switchgear (GIS). $SF_6$ gas was filled in the electrode systems by 3 bar and/or 5 bar, respectively. Partial discharge (PD) pulses were detected through a $50{\Omega}$ non-inductive resistor. A calibration test was carried out according to IEC 60270, and the sensitivity was 0.25 pC/mV. PD pulses were distributed in the phase of $50^{\circ}{\sim}135^{\circ}$ and over 95% of them existed in the phase of $55^{\circ}{\sim}120^{\circ}$ for the POC. PD pulses were distributed in the phase of $230^{\circ}{\sim}310^{\circ}$ and over 90% of them existed in phase of $220^{\circ}{\sim}300^{\circ}$ for the POE. PD pulses occurred in the phase of $40^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}$ and $220^{\circ}{\sim}300^{\circ}$ for the crack, and pulse counts were 25% higher in negative polarity than in positive polarity. PD pulses were distributed in every phase unlike to other three electrode systems and the peak magnitude was measured at $118^{\circ}$ and $260^{\circ}$ for the FP. As described above, PD pulses were observed in positive polarity for the POC, in negative one for the POE, in both one for the crack and the FP. In conclusion, it is expected that the identification rate of defect type can be improved by considering the polarity ratio of PD pulses on the PRPDA method.

  • Ship detection from satellite remote sensing is a crucial application for global monitoring for the purpose of protecting the marine environment and ensuring marine security. It permits to monitor sea traffic including fisheries, and to associate ships with oil discharge. An automatic ship detection approach for RADARSAT Fine Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image is described and assessed using in situ ship validation information collected during field experiments conducted on August 6, 2004. Ship detection algorithms developed here consist of five stages: calibration, land masking, prescreening, point positioning, and discrimination. The fine image was acquired of Ulsan Port, located in southeast Korea, and during the acquisition, wind speeds between 0 m/s and 0.4 m/s were reported. The detection approach is applied to anchoring ships in the anchorage area of the port and its results are compared with validation data based on Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) radar. Our analysis for anchoring ships, above 68 m in length (LOA), indicates a 100% ship detection rate for the RADARSAT single beam mode. It is shown that the ship detection performance of SAR for smaller ships like barge could be higher than the land-based radar. The proposed method is also applied to estimate the ship's dimensions of length and breadth from SAR radar cross section(RCS), but those values were comparatively higher than the actual sizes because of layover and shadow effects of SAR.

  • The hydrologic models, capable of simulating groundwater recharge for long-term period and effects on it of crops management in the agricultural areas, have been used to compute groundwater recharge in the agricultural fields. Among these models, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) has been widely used because it could interpret hydrologic conditions for the long time considering effects of weather condition, land uses, and soil. However the SWAT model couldn't represent the spatial information of Hydrologic Response Unit (HRU), the SWAT HRU mapping module was developed in 2010. With this capability, it is possible to assume and analyze spatio-temporal groundwater recharge. In this study, groundwater recharge of rate for various crops in the Mandae stream watershed was estimated using SWAT HRU Mapping module, which can simulate spato-temporal recharge rate. As a result of this study, Coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) for flow calibration were 0.80 and 0.72, respectively, and monthly groundwater recharge of Mandae watershed in Haean-myeon was 381.24 mm/year. It was 28% of total precipitation in 2009. Groundwater recharge rate was 73.54 mm/month and 73.58 mm/month for July and August 2009, which is approximately 18 times of groundwater recharge rate for December 2009. The groundwater recharges for each month through the year were varying. The groundwater recharge was smaller in the spring and winter seasons, relatively. So, it is necessary to enforce proper management of groundwater recharge during droughty season. Also, the SWAT HRU Mapping module could show the result of groundwater recharge as a GIS map and analyze spatio-temporal groundwater recharge. So, this method, proposed in this study, would be quite useful to make groundwater management plans at agriculture-dominant watershed.
