  • For the safety assessment of the demonstration-scale incineration plant for treating the combustible radioactive wastes, radiation doses of a worker and a residential individual were estimated. The demonstration plant showed a good performance of trial-burn tests using non-radioactive tracers with resulting In high mass reduction of around 40 times and very low emmission of dusts through a stack, which promised a high decontamination factor in an order of 10$^{7}$ . Based on the result s obtained from the trial-burns in the process, the estimation of radiation dose for workers and general publics near the plant was made using dose pathway calculation theories. The parametric values for calculation were selected from design and operational results of the process and from more conservative conditions In reference data. The estimated annual doses for workers and residential indivisuals were 3.07 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ and 4.35 X 10$^{-8}$ $\mu$Sv/y, respectively, which were high enough to operate the process when comparing with the allowable dose limit in the regulation. The dose calculation models were quite applicable with showing an excellent safety for the process.

  • The backward differentiation formula (BDF) method is applied to a three-dimensional reactor kinetics calculation for efficient yet accurate transient analysis with adaptive time step control. The coarse mesh finite difference (CMFD) formulation is used for an efficient implementation of the BDF method that does not require excessive memory to store old information from previous time steps. An iterative scheme to update the nodal coupling coefficients through higher order local nodal solutions is established in order to make it possible to store only node average fluxes of the previous five time points. An adaptive time step control method is derived using two order solutions, the fifth and the fourth order BDF solutions, which provide an estimate of the solution error at the current time point. The performance of the BDF- and CMFD-based spatial kinetics calculation and the adaptive time step control scheme is examined with the NEACRP control rod ejection and rod withdrawal benchmark problems. The accuracy is first assessed by comparing the BDF-based results with those of the Crank-Nicholson method with an exponential transform. The effectiveness of the adaptive time step control is then assessed in terms of the possible computing time reduction in producing sufficiently accurate solutions that meet the desired solution fidelity.

  • Nowadays, precise prediction of the pump performance becomes more important than ever before in high-value industries such as power plants and large ships. The power consumed in such pumps of large head and capacity definitely affects the efficiency of the entire system. In this study, we report the theoretical and CFD results used in prediction of the performance change caused by the reduction of impeller diameter. We have found that the theoretical calculation is somehow useful at least in estimating the very beginning condition for the CFD main calculation.

  • A novel effective calculation method of the compensation current commands of active power filter using voltage source PWM converter is proposed on the basis of the instantaneous reactive power theory. The load currents and the phase of the source voltages are used for the simplification of the calculations and the reduction of the its time. And the calculation of the currents is performed by DSP 32014 within 50 uSEC. For reducing the DC voltage and saving the costs, a passive power filters are used. The simulation results of the effects of the active power filter with a passive filter are presented.

  • This paper proposes a simplified DC calculation method for simplified depth coding (SDC) mode of 3D High Efficiency Video Coding (3D-HEVC) to reduce the computational complexity. For the computational complexity reduction, the current reference software of 3D-HEVC employs reference samples sub-sampling method. However, accumulation, branch, and division operations are still utilized and these operations increase computational complexity. The proposed method calculates DC value without those operations. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves 0.1% coding gain for synthesized views in common test condition (CTC) with the significantly reduced number of computing operations.

  • It is very important that the analysis of postbuckling characteristics for stiffened composite structure. Damage tolerance design concept has been imported in many aerospace structures design to increase the structural efficiency and material failure is an inevitable process in postbuckling behavior. These design concepts are very efficient but consume very much calculation time in analytical process. The proper analysis method for reducing calculation time was researched and the total analysis time was reduced. A selection of proper element, the large load increments in linear response region, and the termination of analysis for unnecessary region were imported in the analysis and about $70\%$ time reduction was achieved with keeping a high accuracy of results.

  • Continuous, discrete and semi continuous HMM systems are used for the speech recognition. Discrete systems have the advantage of low run-time computation. However, vector quantization reduces accuracy and this can lead to poor performance. Continuous systems let us get good correctness but they need much calculation so that occasionally they are unable to be used for practice. Although there are semi-continuous systems which apply advantage of continuous and discrete systems, they also require much computation. In this paper, we proposed the way which reduces calculation for continuous systems. The proposed method has the same computational load as discrete systems but can give better recognition accuracy than discrete systems.

  • One of the principal sources of vibration and noise in permanent magnetic machines is cogging torque, which is induced by interaction between the rotor poles and the stator teeth. For its analysis, using finite element analysis is very time consuming and the calculation of performance factors is extremely sensitive to the discretization. Especially, Maxwell stress tensor method is sensitive to the location of integral path. In this paper, a cogging permeance fuction is defined and replaced by the straight line. And it is assumed that the flux density acting on the stator's tooth side is the euqal to the flux density of the slot area. Using this definition and assumption, analytical calculation of cogging torque is presented and validated. And several reduction method is introduced.

  • The injection mold cooling circuit optimization was studied with a response surface method in the previous research. It took so much time to find an optimum solution for a large product due to an extensive amount of calculation time for the CAE analysis. In order to use the optimization technique in the actual design process, the calculation time should be much reduced. In this study, we tried to reduce the number of design variables with the concept of the close relationship between the depth and the distance of cooling channel. The optimum ratio of the distance to the depth of cooling channels for a 2-dimensional problem was 2.0 so that the optimum ratio was again sought out for 4 large automotive parts. Therefore, the number of design variables for the cooling circuit optimization can be reduced in half, resulting in much faster running time for the optimization as a design tool.

  • In an effort to enhance the quality of feature vector classification and thereby reduce the recognition error rate of the speaker-independent speech recognition, we employ the Mahalanobis distance in the calculation of the similarity measure between feature vectors. It is assumed that the metric matrix of the Mahalanobis distance be diagonal for the sake of cost reduction in memory and time of calculation. We propose that the diagonal elements be given in terms of the variations of the feature vector components. Geometrically, this prescription tends to redistribute the set of data in the shape of a hypersphere in the feature vector space. The idea is applied to the speech recognition by hidden Markov model with fuzzy vector quantization. The result shows that the recognition is improved by an appropriate choice of the relevant adjustable parameter. The Viterbi score difference of the two winners in the recognition test shows that the general behavior is in accord with that of the recognition error rate.
