  • To secure fundamental materials for the performance change in concrete structure damaged by fire, this study analyzed SEM and XRD of hardened cement depending on high temperature conditions. As a result, at more than 200℃, SEM and XRD were not observed because of dehydration of Ettringite; at more than 500℃, calcium hydroxide was rapidly decomposed; at more than 700℃, calcium oxide was found; at 1000℃, the highest peak point appeared.

  • Hydration products formed on the steel surface may impose the resistance to corrosion of steel when a concrete is exposed to a salt environment. In the present study, ordinary Portland cement (OPC), calcium aluminate cement (CAC) and calcium hydroxide are applied as coating materials on the steel surface to consider the hydrations of each binder at corrosion. Corrosion is measured in terms of the corrosion potential and galvanic current to detect the effects in mitigating the corrosion behavior.

  • Aluminosilicate inorganic polymer binder has been studied as an alternative to ordinary Portland cement due to its higher physical properties, chemical resistance and thermal resistance. This study has been carried out in an attempt to understand the hardening characteristics of aluminosilicate binder by varying the content of calcium. Samples with four different ratios of Al, Si, and Ca were synthesized in this study with the Al:Si:Ca mol ratio being 1.00:1.85~1.98:0.29~2.12. Furthermore, an alkali silicate solution was prepared with the sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (NaSi). The hardening characteristics of the specimens were analyzed using XRD, SEM, and TG/DTA. In addition, compressive strength and sintering time of specimens were measured as a function of calcium content. The results showed that the specimen containing 2.12 mol% calcium offered the highest compressive strength. However, the compressive strength of the specimen containing 0.26 mol% calcium was lower relative to the other specimens. The results displayed a distinct tendency that as more calcium was added to the inorganic polymer, setting time became shorter. When calcium was added to the inorganic polymer structure, a second phase was not formed, indicating that the addition of calcium does not affect the crystalline structure.

  • Physico-chemical characteristics of the Ca-based and Na-based dry sorbents were compared using thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) methods. The studied characteristics were thermal stability, sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) absorption capacity and absorption rate at $250^{\circ}C$ which is a typical temperature before a fabric filter, and $SO_2$ absorption capacity at an ambient temperature. Calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$) started to decompose into calcium oxide (CaO) at $390^{\circ}C$ and completed at 480~$500^{\circ}C$, showing 76% of an original $Ca(OH)_2$ weight. Sodium bicarbonate ($NaHCO_3$) also converted to sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) between $95^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$, decreasing the weight to 63% of its initial weight. Among four sorbents tested at $250^{\circ}C$, sodium carbonate had the highest capacity, absorbing 0.35 g $SO_2$/g sorbent. Calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide followed that showing 0.156 g and 0.065 g $SO_2$ absorption per absorbent respectively. Ca-based absorbents showed slower rate than sodium carbonate because of initial stagnant step. However, calcium hydroxide caught more $SO_2$ than sodium carbonate at ambient temperature. From this work, it can be concluded that Ca-based absorbent is a proper sorbent for $SO_2$ treatment at low temperature and sodium carbonate, at high temperature.

  • Theoretical models based on modern interpretations of the morphology and interactions of cement hydration products are developed for prediction of the mechanical properties of hydrated cement paste (hcp). The models are based on the emerging nanostructural vision of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) morphology, and account for the intermolecular interactions between nano-scale calcium C-S-H particles. The models also incorporate the effects of capillary porosity and microcracking within hydrated cement paste. The intrinsic modulus of elasticity and tensile strength of hydrated cement paste are determined based on intermolecular interactions between C-S-H nano-particles. Modeling of fracture toughness indicates that frictional pull-out of the micro-scale calcium hydroxide (CH) platelets makes major contributions to the fracture energy of hcp. A tensile strength model was developed for hcp based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics theories. The predicted theoretical models are in reasonable agreements with empirical models developed based on the experimental performance of hcp.

  • In this study, the air pollutant removal such as sulfur oxides was studied. A combination of the plasma discharge in the reactor by the reaction surface discharge reactor Calcium hydroxides catalytic reactor and air pollutants, hazardous gas SOx, changes in gas concentration, change in frequency, the thickness of the electrode, kinds of electrodes and the addition of simulated composite catalyst composed of a variety of gases, including decomposition experiments were performed by varying the process parameters. The experimental results showed the removal efficiency of 98% in the decomposition of sulfur oxides removal experiment when Calcium hydroxides catalysts and the tungsten(W) electrodes were used. It was increased 3% more than if you do not have the catalytic. If added to methane gas was added the removal efficiency increased decomposition.

  • Large scale of loess has been applied on the south - sea shore of the Korean peninsula to treat red tides, due to many fishery's devastation by red tides every year. However, coastal ecosystem is ruined by the huge amount of loess applied every year. Almost all creatures, living under water such as sea weeds, clams, and fishes, where loess was applied, are disappearing. In this paper, alternative methods of the loess application are investigated. The amount of loess could be reduced by the alternative methods, Especially, loess mixed with calcium oxide has excellent effects to reduce Cochlodinium polykrikoides numbers. It was found that when loess is used with calcium oxide(CaO), removal efficiency of red tides is highly increased. Moreover, the amount of loess could be reduced dramatically.

  • In this study, the change of composition of cement hardened at high temperature through XRD was observed. The specimen was made of cement paste and the heating rate condition was applied at rapid thermal annealing (10.0℃ / min). The decrease of calcium hydroxide was not confirmed, but the calcium carbonate tended to be impossible or decreased after 800℃. Calcium silicate and larnite were observed to increase with increasing temperature. It is considered that silicic acid, which is a stable structure due to the decomposition of calcium silicate, is changed into a phase such as lime.

  • A laboratiory experiment incubated at about $30^{\circ}C$ for 34 days was conducted in order to learn the effect of liming materials and rice straw on the volatilization of ammonia from flooded soils applied with urea. 1. The application of calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate increased buffer action of flood soil, though it resulted in increase in the volatilization of ammonia through raising flooded soil pH containing bicarbonate. 2. The mixing of rice straw powder to soil lowered pH of flooded soil, and decreased the volatilization of ammonia. The effect was particulary large when noliming material was used. 3. Calcium hydroxide depressed the evolution of $CO_2$ in the early days of incubation after flooding, while calcium silicate promoted the ammonification of soil nitrogen from the begining of flooding giving slow change in soil chemical properties. The rice straw was also effective in providing a favorable soil condition for the ammonification rather quickly.
