  • Thermal infrared imaging is a highly promising technology for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance of electronic, electrical and mechanical elements in nuclear power plants. However, conventional low-cost infrared imaging systems suffer from poor spatial resolution compared to commercial CCD cameras.   • In this paper, we presents the remote inspection activity with a mobile robot at the calandria face areas of the PHWR (pressurized heavy water reactor) nuclear power plants during full power plant operation.. The tele-operated mobile robot has been developed for this task. A 4 wheeled mechanism with the dual reconfigurable crawler arm has been adopted for the ease access to the high radiation area of calandria face. A specially designed extendable long reach mast attached on the mobile platform and the thermal image monitoring system enable human eyes to look into the calandria face. Application of robot will keep human workers from high radiation exposure and enhance the reliability of nuclear power plants.

  • CANDU형 원전의 칼란드리아 내부 감속재 열유동은 입구 노즐에서 나온 제트 유동에 의해 발생하는 관성력과 감속재로 전달되는 열부하에 의해 발생하는 부력의 상호작용으로 인해 복잡한 난류 특성을 나타낸다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 복잡한 감속재 열유동을 정확히 예측하기 위한 난류모델의 성능을 평가하기 위해 상용 유동해석 프로그램인 FLUENT에 탑재된 난류모델들을 사용해서 계산한 결과를 Sheridan Park Engineering Laboratory (SPEL)의 실험값과 비교하였다. 결론적으로 CANDU형 원전의 칼란드리아 내부 감속재 열유동을 신뢰할 수 있게 예측하기 위해서는 부력이 난류 유동에 미치는 영향을 고려해주는 생성항을 포함한 난류 모델이 사용되어야 한다.

  • 가압중수로는 운전중 연료교체가 가능하도록 설계된 연료관에서 핵분열을 유도하여 에너지를 얻는다. 연료관은 핵연료와 직접 접촉하며 원자로 냉각재의 통로인 압력관, 주위 감속재와 접촉하며 원자로에 확관된 원자로관, 이것을 양쪽에서 지지하는 엔드피팅과 압력관과 원자로관의 접촉을 방지하기 위한 스페이서 등으로 구성되어 있다. 연료관은 가장 안전성이 요구되는 설비이므로, 캐나다 기술기준 CSA N 285.4에 따라 주기적이고 철저한 가동중검사를 수행하여 건전성을 확인한다. 월성 중수로 연료관의 가동중검사를 수행하기 위해 연료관 검사시스템을 개발하였다. 본 논문은 월성 연료관 현장시험 결과를 검토하고, 개발된 연료관 검사시스템의 유효성을 확인하였다.

ANALYSES OF FLUID FLOW AND HEAT TRANSFER INSIDE CALANDRIA VESSEL OF CANDU-6 REACTOR USING CFD

  • In a CANDU (CANada Deuterium Uranium) reactor, fuel channel integrity depends on the coolability of the moderator as an ultimate heat sink under transient conditions such as a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) with coincident loss of emergency core cooling (LOECC), as well as normal operating conditions. This study presents assessments of moderator thermal-hydraulic characteristics in the normal operating conditions and one transient condition for CANDU-6 reactors, using a general purpose three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code. First, an optimized calculation scheme is obtained by many-sided comparisons of the predicted results with the related experimental data, and by evaluating the fluid flow and temperature distributions. Then, using the optimized scheme, analyses of real CANDU-6 in normal operating conditions and the transition condition have been performed. The present model successfully predicted the experimental results and also reasonably assessed the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a real CANDU-6 with 380 fuel channels. A flow regime map with major parameters representing the flow pattern inside a calandria vessel has also proposed to be used as operational and/or regulatory guidelines.

  • Tele-operation and remote monitoring techniques are essential and important technologies for performing the inspection and repair tasks effectively in nuclear power plants. This paper presents the application of a mobile robot for the remote monitoring and inspection of the Calandria faces, where human access is limited because of the high-level radioactive environments during full power operation. The mobile robot was designed with reconfigurable crawler type of wheels attached on the front and rear side in order to pass through the ditch. The extendable mast, mounted on the mobile robot, can be extended up to 8 m vertically. This robot was also equipped a visible CCD/thermal infrared inspection head module and a stereo camera module for the enhancement of visual inspection.

  • The development of a teleoperated mobile robot, Kaerot/m2, has been described. Kaerot/m2 consists of three subsystems - a 4 wheeled mechanism with the dual reconfigurable crawler arms, a thermal image monitoring system , and an extendable long reach mast. The mechanical design, control system of Kaerot/m2 in terms of remote inspection operation at a high radiation level of the Calandria face environment has been shown. Kaerot/m2 is capable of detecting the degraded locations of the Calandria face in a remote manner.
