  • A design procedure of stabilizing cable is proposed using buffeting analysis to stabilize the seesaw-like motion of the free cantilevered structure of a cable-stayed bridge during its construction. The bridge examined is a composite cable-stayed bridge having a main span length of 500 m. Based on the buffeting analysis, the stress in bare structure exceeded the allowable limit and a set of stabilizing cable was planned to mitigate the responses. The most efficient positions of the hold-down stabilizing cables were numerically investigated by means of an FE-based buffeting analysis and the required dimensions and pretension of the stabilizing cables were also calculated. The proposed stabilizing measure would be expected to secure the aerodynamic safety of a cantilevered structure under construction with considerable mitigation of buffeting responses.

  • Generally, cable-stayed bridges are both statically indeterminate structure with a high degree of redundancy and flexible structure. So it is very important to ensure precision control during both fabrication and construction. In precision control of cable-stayed bridges, precision control under multi-objective programming method is needed, because precision control problem of cable-stayed bridges is a multi-objective programming problem in which many objective functions are regard as variables. In previous studies, it was regarded as a single-objective problem, so it had many problems in respect of usefulness and rationalness. In this study, precision control under multi-objective programming method is proposed considering economy, efficiency, and safety at best in precision control of cable-stayed bridges. Precision control problem of cable-stayed bridges is formulated with satisfying trade-off method which is a kind of multi-objective programming method, then it is optimized with min-max method. A computer program is presented including above process.

  • Cable dome that consists of three component such as cable, strut and fabric membrane has complex structural characteristics. Main structural system of cable dome is cable-strut tensegric system and fabric membrane element is conceived as cladding roof material. One of the important problem of cable dome is to investigate the structural response from external load effect such as snow and wind. When cable dome is subjected to load each structural component has various special structural characteristics. One is that geometrical nonlinearity should be considered because large deformation is occurred from their flexible characteristic. The other is that wrinkling occurs occasionally because cable and membrane elements can not transmit compressive forces. So this paper researches the physical structural response of cable dome structure and the structural behavior when failure occurred at a part of structure.

  • The cable dome, proposed by Geiger after developing Fuller's idea of tensegrity and improved by Levy, is a new type of large span space structures. In this paper, formulations of the initial forces distribution in members of two main systems of cable dome, which are Geiger dome and Levy dome, are presented. By analyzing the static performance of Levy dome and the variation of internal forces in members of the structure, four groups of design parameters in cable dome structure are represented in terms of: (1) the numbers of rings and the spaces between the rings; (2) the slopes of ridge cables; (3) the lengths of struts; (4) the initial force in one member of the structure.

  • In order to evaluate the water ingress to URD power cables with the jacketing materials and the cable structures, water vapor transmission (WVT) tests were carried out by the ASTM and the TEPCO's specification. All polyolefin compounds showed the superior water suppression to conventional PVC. Especially, linear polyethylenes have very low WVT. In case of cable structures, Allaminate cables showed the significant water suppression due to the watertight structure. Accordingly, it can be concluded that jacketing material and cable structure play an important role in the water suppression of URD power cables.

  • Rain-wind induced vibrations of cables are a challenging problem in the design of cable-stayed bridges. The precise excitation mechanism of the complex interaction between structure, wind and rain is still unknown. A theoretical model that is able to accurately simulate the observed phenomena is not available. This paper presents a mathematical model describing rain-wind induced vibrations as movement-induced vibrations using the quasi-steady strip theory. Both, the vibrations of the cable and the movement of the water rivulet on the cable surface can be described by the model including all geometrical and physical nonlinearities. The analysis using the stability and bifurcation theory shows that the model is capable of simulating the basic phenomena of the vibrations, such as dependence of wind velocity and cable damping. The results agree well with field data and wind tunnel tests. An extensive experimental study is currently performed to calibrate the parameters of the model.

  • The cable stayed roof structure of Jeju worldcup stadium is erected with correct prestressed force that is required by the structural engineer who designs this structure. This study evaluated and adapted the erection process of cable, the erection force and the measurement of cable force for Jeju worldcup stadium. The process of erection is required not only to calculate election force but also to check structural stability, post process, construction period and using cranes. Considering the site conditions and technical problems, this study can attain successfully the erection of cable stayed roof structure of Jeju worldcup stadium with allowable errors.

  • Cable knitting, one of the most representative structures of knitwear has been applied to a number of knit items in a variety of expressions every season. The purpose of this study is to analyze the various types of expressions applied with cable knitting techniques to make the necessary data for planning cable knit designs. The types of cable knitting were devide into two categories which are based on the cable knitting pattern and structure. Based on the pattern, firstly, formal type is a reproduction of traditional Aran knit style and is usually applied to a practical and comfortable timeless knit product. Secondly, informal type is irregular applied to patterns and directions to highlight the dynamics of cable patterns. Thirdly, contrasting type emphasizes the cable pattern by contrasting the color of the part of the cable pattern. Fourthly, figurative type is the expression of the conceptual motifs and using the cable knit pattern itself as motif. Based on the structure, firstly, open type is to emphasize patterns and spaces by utilizing open spaces created by the intersection of cabling stitches. Secondly, decorative type is to enhance the ornamental effect of cable knitting by various methods and other subsidiary materials. Thirdly, avant-garde type is applied in various ways with exaggerated volumes or textures using the three-dimensional effects of cable knitting. Through this study, we look forward to the possibility of expressing the unique aesthetic characteristics of each of the various knitting techniques.

  • A finite element analysis technology applicable to the prediction of the static nonlinear response of cable roof structure is presented. The unified kinematic description is employed to formulate the present cable element and different strain definitions such as Green-Lagrange strain, Biot strain and Hencky strain can be adopted. The Newton-Raphson method is used to trace the nonlinear load-displacement path. In the iteration process, the compressive stress of a cable element is not allowed. For the verification of the present cable element, four numerical examples are tackled. Finally, numerical results obtained by using the present cable element are provided as new benchmark test results for cable structures under static loads.

  • The cable structure is a kind of ductile structural system using the tension cable and compression column as a main element. From mechanical characteristics of the structural material, it is profitable to be subjected to the axial forces than bending moment or shear forces. And we haweto consider the local buckling when it is subjected to compression forces, but tension member can be used until the failure strength. So we can say that the tension member is the most excellent structural member. Cable dome structures are made up of only the tension cable and compression column considering these mechanical efficiency and a kind of structural system. In this system, the compression members are connected by using tension members, not connected directly each other. Also, this system is lightweight and easy to construct. But, the cable dome structural system has a danger of global buckling as external load increases. That is, as the axisymmetric structure is subjected to the axisymmetric load, the unsymmetric deformation mode is happened at some critical point and the capacity of the structure is rapidly lowered by this reason. This phenomenon Is the bifurcation and we have to reflect this in the design process of the large space structures. In this study, We investigated the nonlinear unstable phenomenon of the Geiger, Zetlin and Flower-type cable dome.
