In this study, modeling of the CD stud welding system was conducted considering mechanical and electrical components. The electrical components such as arc resistance, cable resistance, capacitance, internal resistance and cable inductance were found to affect the output waveform significantly. The calculated results showed food agreements with the experiment results within 20% error. The main defect of CD stud welding with 1010 steel stud and SS400 steel plate was the void trapped between stud and base metal. The effect of the spring force and stud tip size on void formation was investigated.
In this paper, we propose a electrical/mechanical method to effectively diagnose the local deterioration of a 10m long power shielded twist pair cable defined by the American Wire Gauge (AWG) 14 specification using electrical/mechanical methods. The rapid deterioration of the cable proceeded by using the heating furnace, which is based on the Arrhenius equations proceeds from 0 to 35 years with the deteriorated equivalent model. In this paper, we introduce a method to diagnose the characteristics of locally deteriorated cable by using $S_{21}$ phase and frequency change rate measured by vector network analyzer which is the electrical diagnostic method. The measured $S_{21}$ phase and rate of change of frequency show a constant correlation with the number of years of locally deteriorated cable, thus it can be useful for diagnosing deteriorated cables. The change of modulus due to deterioration was measured by a modulus measuring device, which is defined by the ratio of deformation from the force externally applied to the cable, and the rate of modulus change also shows a constant correlation with the number of years of locally deteriorated cable. Finally, By combining the advantages of electrical/mechanical diagnostic methods, we can efficiently diagnose the local deterioration in the power shielded cable.
In this paper, a five degree-of-freedom haptic device is proposed. The proposed haptic device has a pen which is suspended by tensioned six strings. Human operator handles the pen. Six DC motors are used as actuators to generate tensions in six strings to make resultant force feedback at the pen to the human operator Six encoders are used for calculating the movement of the pen. A digital controller is used for generate control signals for the suitable tension in the six strings. A current amplifiers is used for amplifying the control signals. Cable-suspended system has advantages of structure simplicity (only with several strings driven by motors without using other tensioning mechanisms), low inertia, and high force-to-weight ratio. Pen-based system has advantages of compactness and ...
The nonlinearity of a cable-stayed bridge results in the large displacement of main girder due to a long span, the large axial forces reduce the catenary action of cables and the flexural stiffness. Therefore, the static and dynamic behavior of pylon for a cable-stayed bridge plays an important role in determining its safety. This study was performed to find the behavior of pylon of cable-stayed bridge for the first-order analysis considering of axial load only and for the second-order analysis considering of lateral deflection due to axial load. The axial force and moment values of pylon were different from the results of the first-order analysis and second-order analysis according to pylon shape and cross beam stiffness when the pylon was subjected to earthquake and wind loads. In the second-order analysis, comparing the numerical values of the member forces for the dynamic analysis, types 3 and 4 (A type) were relatively more advantageons types than types 1 and 2 (H type). Considering the stability for pylon of cable-stayed bridge (whole structural system), types 3 and 4 (A type) with pre-buckling of girder were proper types than types 1 and 2 (H type) with buckling of pylon.
With the increasing running speed of trains, new railway lines in metropolitan areas, and the rising demand for green transportations, the number of underground and tunnel sections are constantly becoming larger, and installations of overhead rigid conductor systems are becoming wider. However, domestic commercial products for overhead rigid conductors are limited to 120 km/h train speeds. In this study, to develop a high-speed (250 km/h) overhead rigid conductor, R-Bar (Rigid Bar), the electrical and mechanical stability was enhanced through the improvement of the cross sectional shape of the R-Bar; the transition structure was also designed for flexibility and natural frequency isolation. In addition, the evaluation of contact forces between a pantograph and the overhead rigid conductor system for 250 km/h train speeds was performed using dynamic analysis.
Ice accretions on stay cables may result in the instable vibration of galloping, which would affect the safety of cable-stayed bridges. A large number of studies have investigated the galloping vibrations of transmission lines. However, the obtained aerodynamics in transmission lines cannot be directly applied to the stay cables on cable-stayed bridges. In this study, linear and nonlinear single degree-of-freedom models were introduced to obtain the critical galloping wind velocity of iced stay cables where the aerodynamic lift and drag coefficients were identified in the wind tunnel tests. Specifically, six ice shapes were discussed using section models with geometric scale 1:1. The results presented obvious sudden decrease regions of the aerodynamic lift coefficient for all six test models. Numerical analyses of iced stay cables associated to a medium-span cable-stayed bridge were carried out to evaluate the potential galloping instability. The obtained nonlinear critical wind velocity for a 243-meter-long stay cable is much lower than the design wind velocity. The calculated linear critical wind velocity is even lower. In addition, numerical analyses demonstrated that increasing structural damping could effectively mitigate the galloping vibrations of iced stay cables.
Subsea power cables are subjected to various external loads induced by environmental and mechanical factors during manufacturing, shipping, and installation. Therefore, the prediction of the structural strength is essential. In this study, experimental and theoretical analyses were performed to investigate the axial stiffness of subsea power cables. A uniaxial tensile test of a 6.5 m three-core AC inter-array subsea power cable was carried out using a 10 MN hydraulic actuator. In addition, the resultant force was measured as a function of displacement. The theoretical model proposed by Witz and Tan (1992) was used to numerically predict the axial stiffness of the specimen. The Newton-Raphson method was employed to solve the governing equation in the theoretical analysis. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical results for axial stiffness revealed satisfactory agreement. In addition, the predicted axial stiffness was linear notwithstanding the nonlinear geometry of the subsea power cable or the nonlinearity of the governing equation. The feasibility of both experimental and theoretical framework for predicting the axial stiffness of subsea power cables was validated. Nevertheless, the need for further numerical study using the finite element method to validate the framework is acknowledged.
An overhead rigid conductor system is mainly applied to the subway and recently studies on the rigid system have been conducted for applications such as tunnels of high-speed line and speed improvement of a conventional lines up to 250km/h. Power feeding performance which is the most important in a rigid system can be measured by contact force and characteristics of this contact force are related to the shape and material of the R-BAR. In this paper, we analyze the measurements of contact force, current heating temperature, impedance of a rigid conductor which was developed in Korea, after that we compare static characteristics of home and abroad rigid conductors which have various shapes and materials.
