The uptake and retention of strontium-90 from seawater by the seaweed Undaria pinnatifda(sea mustard) varied depending on the plant part, exposure time, salinity, contents of stable strontium and calcium, and presence of chelating agent in the seawater. The concentration factors attained at equilibrium were in the range of 50 and it was evident that the bioaccumulation was largely due to the adsorption of the radionuclide on the surface of seaweed.
The three natural zeolites collected in Yungil-gun, Kyungsangbuk-do, Korea, were analyzed by means of chemical wet methods and X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that the primary species of those zeolites were clinoptilolite mixed with heulandite, feldspar, montmorillonite, and quartz. These zeolites were chemically treated with NaOH, $\textrm{Ca(OH)}_2$, and HCl solution and their differences were also studied with X-ray diffraction method. The capabilities of removing $Cs^+$ and Sr^{2+}$ ions with chemically untreated zeolites, chemically treated zeolites, and also with synthetic zeolites were compared. The effect of other cations in removing Sr^{2+}$ ions was also studied. The experimental results showed that$Cs^+$ and Sr^{2+}$ ions could be removed up to 98% and 95% respectively out of 5 ppm with chemically untrearted natural zeolites. The treatment of 0.02N-$\textrm{Ca(OH)}_2$ and that of 2N-NaOH were most effective In removing $Cs^+$ and Sr^{2+}$ ions, respectively. It was found that the mountaintop of Sangjung 1-dong natural zeolite treated with 2N-NaOH was most efficient in removing Sr^{2+}$ ions mixed with other cations, compared with any other chemically treated and untreated natural zeolites in this work.
The adsorption and separation behaviors of alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal ions using a poly-dibenzo-18-crown-6 were investigated in aqueous solution. The adsorption degree(E) and distribution ratio(D) of alkali, alkaline earth metal ions were Li(I)$t_R$) of metal ions were affected by the adsorption degree(E) and distribution ratio(D). This results showed good separation efficiency of K(I), Sr(II), Ag(I) and Pb(II) from the mixed metal solution.
series of Ca1-xSrxS:Ce phosphors were synthesized by solid-state reactions. The Ca1-xSrxS:Ce phosphors have a strong absorption in region from 430 nm to 470 nm. The emission peaks of CaS:Ce are located at 510 nm and 570 nm. The partial replacement of Ca by Sr in Ca1-xSrxS:Ce causes a blue shift of emission wavelengths. The Ca1-xSrxS:Ce can be used as bluish green and yellow emitting phosphors for white light emitting diodes (LEDs) pumped by the blue LED. We reported the optical properties of Ca1-xSrxS:Ce phosphors for application in phosphor converted white LEDs.
To obtain the basic data for protective roles and first-aid of radiation hazard, the present studies were carried out to evaluate the decontamination of radiostrontium by the First-Aid drugs. Each mouse was administered intraperitoneally dose of sodium alginate 5mg, $CaNa_3DTPA$ 8.4mg and saline 5ml following the internal contamination with 1 $\mu$Ci of strontium as $^{85}SrCl_2$. $^{85}Sr$ was determined by the radioactivity of body burden, urinary excretion, fecal excretion and organ distribution by Ge-detector and MCA. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Effective half life on whole body retention $^{85}Sr$ was determined at 33 hours. 2. The decontamination effect of First-Aid durgs on the body $^{85}Sr$ burden were increased $CaNa_3DTPA$ (4.7 times), sodium alginate (1.7 times) and saline (2.4 times) respectively. 3. Strontium were excreted through urine (35.4%), feces (64.4%) and other (0.2%). But on the $^{85}Sr$ excretion routes following First-Aid drugs treatment, strontium-85 mainly were excreted through urine after $CaNa_3DTPA$ and saline treatment, and was excreted through feces after sodium alginate treatment. 4. The organ distribution of strontium-85 is vertebra, femur, sternum and liver in order Finally, the extrapolations from these data to victims were suggested that the rapid administration of $CaNa_3DTPA$, sodium alginate and saline simultaneously were markedly increased the decontamination effects on the internal contamination of radiostrontium.

Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, HAP) particles have attracted a great deal of attention in biomedical fields due to their good biocompatibility, bioactivity and fairly broad applications as drug delivery, dental implant, bone cement, and etc. Thus, many researchers have made an effort to add new functionalities such as luminescence, drug delivery, and bone regeneration properties up to HAP powders by controlling their nanostructure as well as composition. In this research, the mesoporous strontium substituted HAP (Sr-HAP) microspheres were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. In this synthesis, aspartic acid monomers were utilized to form microsphere by controlling surface energy of HAP particles and Sr ions were substituted into Ca ion sites, which induced luminescence property in HAP powders. Moreover, the change in the amount of Sr substitution was found to influence the particle size, morphology, and concurrently surface area, which led to changing drug loading as well as drug release property. The amount of Sr influences the morphology, luminescent properties, particle size, surface area cell viability and drug loading property, which are investigated by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, XPS and in vitro test such as MTT assay and drug release test. In particular, the multifunctional Sr-HAP with molar ratios of 0.25 (Sr/(Ca+Sr)) possessed the strongest luminescent property as well as the superior drug loading and sustained release properties that were correspondent with large surface area and pore size. Our study indicates that the fabricated multifunctional Sr-HAP microspheres are quite useful for bone regeneration and drug delivery.
Eleven salt replacements$(SR-1{\sim}SR-11)$ composed of NaCl, KCl, $MgSO_4,\;CaSO_4$, lysine or glutamic acid were prepared and used for the preparation of low salt Kimchi instead of NaCl alone. Some chemical and microbiological characteristics of the low-salt Kimchi with 2.5% salt replacement were determined during the fermentation at $20^{\circ}C$. The pH decrease and acidity increase of low-salt Kimchi were slower than those of control Kimchi with NaCl alone. The total number of microorganism in SR-8 Kimchi added L-lysine was lower than that of control Kimchi until 5 days of fermentation. However, there was no difference in the numer of lactic bacteria between low-salt Kimchi and control Kimchi. The growth of yeasts was found to be slow in low-salt Kimchi with SR-8. The low-salt Kimchi with SR-3 showed the hardest texture among the prepared Kimchi. The overall acceptabilities of low-salt Kimchi prepared with SR-1, SR-3 composed of NaCl, KCl, $MgSO_4,\;CaSO_4$, and SR-10 added 0.2% glutamic acid to the elements were similar to the control Kimchi.
The $Ca^{2+}-ATPase$ of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) was solubilized and reconstituted into a mixture of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) of varying ratios in order to assess the effect of physical states of phospholipids on the incorporation and functions $Ca^{2+}-ATPase$. On the basis of the spectral data of Ca-arsenazo III, the $Ca^{2+}$ uptake of SR was increased linearly as the PC content increased in the reconstituted vesicles. The ATP hydrolysis activity also increased as PC content increased up to 25% and then decreased slightly as the PC content further increased. On the other hand the incorporation of $Ca^{2+}-ATPase$ into the reconstituted vesicls occured maximally at 25% PC and 75% PE mixture which is known to have a non-bilayer structure in reconstitution system. From the above results it is clear that preexisting defects in the lipid bilayer promote protein incorporation into the bilayer during reconstitution and lamellar structure of the bilayer facilitates the $Ca^{2+}-ATPase$ function.
Phytoplasmas were discovered in diseased Elaeocarpus sylvestris trees growing on Jeju Island that showed symptoms of yellowing and darkening in the leaves. Leaf samples from 14 symptomatic plants in Jeju-si and Seogwipo-si were collected and phytoplasma 16S rRNA was successfully amplified by nested polymerase chain reaction using universal primers. The sequence analysis detected two phytoplasmas, which showed 99.5% identity to 'Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris' and 'Ca. P. malaysianum' affiliated to 16SrI and 16SrXXXII groups, respectively. Through polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses using the AfaI (RsaI) restriction enzyme, the presence of two phytoplasmas strains as well as cases of mixed infection of these strains was detected. In a virtual RFLP analysis with 17 restriction enzymes, the 16S rRNA sequence of the 'Ca. P. asteris' strain was found to match the pattern of the 16SrI-B subgroup. In addition, the phytoplasmas in the mixed-infection cases could be distinguished using specific primer sets. In conclusion, this study confirmed mixed infection of two phytoplasmas in one E. sylvestris plant, and also the presence of two phytoplasmas (of the 16SrI and 16SrXXXII groups) in Jeju Island (Republic of Korea).

A cubic perovskite-type CaCu₃Ti₄O/sub 12/ compound has recently drawn a great attention because of an extraordinary high permittivity (~10⁴ at 1 kHz) at room temperature and its near temperature-independence over a wide temperature region, and thus numerous literature have been reported on CCTO polycrytalline ceramics and thin films. However, only a few literature have been reported on the CCTO single due to the lack of information about the CCTO primary phase field. On the basis of our recent experimental determination of the CCTO primary phase field, we could grow ACu₃Ti₄O/sub 12/(A=Ca, Sr) single crystals using both top-seeded solution growth and flux growth methods. This presentation will include three major parts. In part I, the thermal decomposition reaction of CCTO and its primary phase field in the CaO-CuO-TiO₂ ternary system will be presented. Detailed growth conditions of ACu₃Ti₄O/sub 12/(A=Ca, Sr) single crystals and characteristics of as-grown crystals will be followed in Part II. Part III will be comprised of dielectric properties of as-grown ACu₃Ti₄O/sub 12/(A=Ca, Sr) single crystals. Our experimental results will be compared with those of previous reports for discussion.
