Acicular type aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate was synthesized by carbonation reaction of $Ca(OH)_2$ slurry and $CO_2$ gas. As increasing the initial concentration of $Mg^{2+}$ ion, calcite crystal phase substantially decreased while that of aragonite crystal phase increased. According to XRD and EDS analysis, it was found that the addition of $MgCl_2$ induced the $Mg^{2+}$ ion to substitute in $Ca^{2+}$ ion site of calcite lattice then the unstabled calcite structure be resolved, consequently the growth of calcite structure is interrupted while the growth of aragonite structure is expedited.
Dihydropyridine (DHP) calcium channel blockers (CCBs) have been widely used to treat of several cardiovascular diseases. An excessive shortening of action potential duration (APD) due to the reduction of $Ca^{2+}$ channel current ($I_{Ca}$) might increase the risk of arrhythmia. In this study we investigated the electrophysiological effects of nicardipine (NIC), isradipine (ISR), and amlodipine (AML) on the cardiac APD in rabbit Purkinje fibers, voltage-gated $K^+$ channel currents ($I_{Kr}$, $I_{Ks}$) and voltage-gated $Na^+$ channel current ($I_{Na}$). The concentration-dependent inhibition of $Ca^{2+}$ channel currents ($I_{Ca}$) was examined in rat cardiomyocytes; these CCBs have similar potency on $I_{Ca}$ channel blocking with $IC_{50}$ (the half-maximum inhibiting concentration) values of 0.142, 0.229, and 0.227 nM on NIC, ISR, and AML, respectively. However, ISR shortened both $APD_{50}$ and $APD_{90}$ already at $1{\mu}M$ whereas NIC and AML shortened $APD_{50}$ but not $APD_{90}$ up to $30{\mu}M$. According to ion channel studies, NIC and AML concentration-dependently inhibited $I_{Kr}$ and $I_{Ks}$ while ISR had only partial inhibitory effects (<50% at $30{\mu}M$). Inhibition of $I_{Na}$ was similarly observed in the three CCBs. Since the $I_{Kr}$ and $I_{Ks}$ mainly contribute to cardiac repolarization, their inhibition by NIC and AML could compensate for the AP shortening effects due to the block of $I_{Ca}$.
A feasibility study has been conducted regarding the application of waste coffee grounds as an adsorbent for the treatment of nickel ion containing wastewater. The major variables which considered to influence the adsorbability of nickel ion were its initial concentration, reaction temperature, pH, and coexisting ion. The specific surface area of coffee grounds used in the experiment was found to be ca. $39.67m^2/g$, which suggesting its potential applicability as an adsorbent due to its relatively high surface area. In the experimental conditions, more than 90% of the initial amount of nickel ion was shown to adsorb within 15 minutes and equilibrium in adsorption was attained after 3 hours. The adsorption behavior of nickel ion was well explained by Freundlich model and kinetics study showed that the adsorption reaction was second-order. Adsorption was reduced with temperature and its change of enthalpy in standard state was estimated to be -807.05 kJ/mol. Arrhenius equation was employed for the calculation of the activation energy of adsorption and nickel ion was observed to adsorb on coffee grounds exoentropically based on thermodynamic estimations. As pH rose, the adsorption of nickel ion was diminished presumably due to the formation of cuboidal complex with hydroxide ion and the coexistence of cadmium ion was found to decrease the amount of nickel ion adsorption, which was proportional to the concentration of cadmium ion.
Calcium modulates the activity of guanylate cyclase and plays a key role in dark and light adaptation in the visual system. We have measured the Ca$^{2+}$, K$^+$ and Na$^+$ concentration in dark and light adapted bullfrog's (Rana catesbeiana) vitreous humor by using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The calcium concentration of the light adapted bullfrog's vitreous humor was higher than that of the dark adapted bullfrog's vitreous humor. This means that ion activity between the photoreceptor and vitreous humor side is light dependent and we have found that a Ca$^{2+}$ channel and Na$^+$ - Ca$^{2+}$ exchanger exist in the vitreous humor.
It is known that bones get damaged by accidents and aging. Since the discovery of Bioglass, various kinds of ceramics have been also found to bond to living bone; some of these ceramics are already being clinically used as bone-repairing materials. In the present study, antibacterial calcium silicate gel ($Ag-30CaO{\cdot}70SiO_2$ gel) was prepared by sol-gel method in order to control the microstructure, which is related to the dissolution rate and induction period of apatite formation in body environment. In addition, biological $Ag-30CaO{\cdot}70SiO_2$ is tested. This was done to impart antimicrobial activity to the $30CaO{\cdot}70SiO_2$. Ag ion was added during sol-gel synthesis to replace the $H_2O$ added during the making of the $30CaO{\cdot}70SiO_2$ gel, which has silver solutions of various concentration. After the sol-gel process, 1N-$HNO_3$ solution was used to wash the gel when synthesizing the gel, in order to maintain the porous structure and remove PEG, water soluble polymers. Then, the apatite forming ability of the sol-gel derived CaO-$SiO_2$ gels was investigated using simulated body fluid (SBF), which had almost the same ion concentration as that of human blood plasma. The gels were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM observation, XRD, and fluorescent microscopy. The apatite was successfully created even after washing the gel; apatite is present in an amorphous state, and was found to affect the concentration of the Ag ion in cells in MC3T3 live & dead assay results. From these results, it is suggested that a good material that can be used to repair defects of nature bone is $Ag-30CaO{\cdot}70SiO_2$ gel.
Several kinds of coagulants such as aluminum sulfate, PAC, PASS are being used to treat drinking water resulting in residual aluminum ions in the water. Recently, it has been reported that high intake of aluminum ion may cause neurological dieseases such as Alzheimer's diesease and presenile dementia. Because of the possible adverse effect, WHO and EEC recommand to regulate residual aluminum. The autorities in Korea also has plan of regulating residual alunimum from 1995. But there is not enough information about the range of residual aluminum ion concentration when the aluminum sulfate, PAC or PASS has been used as a coagulant. Therefore the study has been conducted to find out the range of residual aluminum ion concentration after using aluminum sulfate, PAC, and PASS. Furthermore the effect of turbidity and alkalinity have been investigated. The experimental results are summarized as; 1. Most of the residual aluminum ion concentrations were within $10^{-6}$ and $10^{-5}mole/l$. Three coagulants have not showed any considerable difference in the residual aluminum concentration up to 50 NTU. However PAC has showed the least residual aluminum in high turbidity water over 100 NTU. 2. The low alkalinity water having 25mg/l as $CaCO_3$ has showed less residual aluminum than the water having 50mg/l alkalinity. However, the difference was not significcant. 3. Even the lowest residual aluminum concentration was over 0.05mg/l. Therefore the process to reduce residual aluminum would be necessary in water treatment plants.
Na$_2$Si$_2$O$_{5}$ added to the solution affects the hydration of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍFe$_2$O$_3$ with calcium sulfate. The reaction between 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ Fe$_2$O$_3$and CaSO$_4$ㆍ 2$H_2O$ decrease with increasing amount of Na$_2$Si$_2$O$_{5}$ in solution, owing to low hydraulic reactivity of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍFe$_2$O$_3$by the adsorption of silicate ions on the surface of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍ Fe$_2$O$_3$ particles. The dissolution rate of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍ Fe$_2$O$_3$ particles deceased with the increase of the concentration of silicate ion in solution. When the 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍFe$_2$O$_3$ particles was hydrated in gypsum - Na$_2$Si$_2$O$_{5}$ solution, the hydration was retarded and the rate could not discriminate between formation of ettringite and that of monosulfate, and it stopped in high concentration of silicate ions. However, silicate ion did not any effect on the dissolution rate of gypsum.ypsum.
preliminary study on the chemical compositions of forty seven precipitations from March 1994 to May 1995 In Yeoncheon-gun, which Is adjacent to the southern boundary of demilitarized zone (DMZ) in the northernmost tip of Kyunggi Province has been Performed. The metal cation and anion concentrations were measured by atomic absorption spectrometer and ion chromatography, respectively. pH/lon meter and direct nesslerization method were used for the concentration measurements of $H^+$ ion and $NH_46+$ ions, respectively Based on the data, the quantitative orders of the cation and anion average concentrations were $Ca^{2+}>NH_4^+>Na^+>K^+>Mg^{2+}>H^+ and SO_4^{2+}>Cl^-> NO_3^-$, respectively..The ratio of average total anion concentration to average total cation concentration was 0.97. The average pH value of the precipitations was 5.60. These results, correlation coefficients between the ion concentrations, and monthly variations of pH value and precipitation amount are used for chemical analysis on the environmental Pollution and Pollutant sources In Yeoncheon-gun of Kyunggi province near DMZ.
Although various theories have been presented on the mechanism of setting retardation of 3CaO·Al2O3, this phenomenon has not yet been defined. The present investigation was initiated in order to solve the mechanism from the view point of coordination chemistry. The solubility of Ca(OH)2 in aquous solution of soldium gluconate was abnormally high, and was proportional to the concentration of sodium gluconate. These phenomena were attributed to the soluble complex formation, that is, (1 : 1)Ca complex formation between calcium ion and gluconate ion. The author's proposal was further confirmed by the results of electrical conductivity measurement. The formation of calcium complex was also supported by IR spectra and DTA. When sodium gluconate was dissolved in 3CaO·Al2O3 suspension, calcium complex and aluminum complex were formed. As an experimental evidence, the asymmetric stretching vibration of carboxyl group in sodium gluconate was observed to be shifted to lower frequency from 1625cm-1 to 1585cm-1 characteristically. The characteristic exothermic peaks of the complexs at 430℃ and 700℃ observed in DTA curve also suggest the formation of the complexs between sodium gluconate and 3CaO·Al2O3.
