Effect of the Water Quality on the Variation of Ascorbic Acid Content during Yulmoo Mul-kimchi Fermentation (담금수의 수질이 열무 물김치의 비타민 C 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • Yulmoo Mul-kimchi was prepared by fermentation of the mixture of 1 part of leafy radish and 2.75 parts of water. It is thought that during the kimchi fermentation both the biosynthesis and destruction of ascorbic acid occurred at the same time. So the ascorbic acid content in Kimchi broth was strongly influenced by the environment of the processing period. In the present studies, an attempt had been made to elucidate the effect of water quality on the content of ascorbic acid and the population change of microorganism during Mul-kimchi fermentation. Five kinds of water such as tap water, an underground water, one commercially available processed water, distilled water and triply distilled water were examined. Nevertheless there were no differences in the population of microorganism and the pattern of acid formation among the five different kind of waters, a large variation of ascorbic acid content was observed. The ascorbic acid content of Kimchi prepared with triply distilled water showed the highest of 7.2 mg% in contrast to 3.37 mg% in tap water kimchi, and 5.72 mg% in the kimchi using underground water which has relatively high concentration of Ca. These results suggested that pure water free of metal ions might prevent the destruction of ascorbic acid during the fermentation. The considerable amount of ascorbic acid in the Kimchi with underground water might be due to Ca ion in the water.

The Photoluminance Properties of Blue Phosphor with Chemical Composition in BaO-MgO-$Al_2O_3$ System (BaO-MgO-$Al_2O_3$계에서 조성변화에 따른 청색 형광체의 발광특성)

  • The optical properties with chemical composition change in BaO- MgO-$AI_2O_3$, system activated by divalent Eu ion were investigated under 254nm ultraviolet(UV) and 147nm vacuum ultraviolet(VUV). These phosphors emitted a blue light at a dominant wavelength of $\lambda$=445nm under UV and VUV irradiations. It was found that the brightness of $BaMgAI_{14}O_{23}$ phosphor increased with Eu concentration up to 10% under UV but it showed a maximum emitting intensity at 5% Eu for VUV. The emitting intensity of blue color of $BaMgAl_{10}O_{l7}$ phosphor was higher than that of $BaMgAI_{14}O_{23}$for both excitation. A further improvement in brightness was obtained for $Ba_{o.9}Ca_{0.1}MaAl_{14}O_{23}$ and $Ba_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}MgAl_{10}O_{17}$ phosphor synthesized by the substition of $Ba^{+2}$ ion with O.lmole of $Ca^{+2}$ or $Sr^{+2}$ ions in $BaMgAl_{IO}O_{17}$: Eu phosphor.

Characteristics of Inorganic Components in Fine Particles Collected at Chunchon during the Springtime Yellow Sand Occurrence Period in 2002 (춘천에서 2002년 봄철 황사 발생기간 동안에 채취된 미세분진 중 무기성분의 특성)

  • Yellow sand (YS) storms were observed about ten times in the Korean peninsula during March and April in 2002. Twenty four hour fine particle (PM$\_$2.5/) samples were collected onto the 47 mm Teflon - coated quartz filters over 9 days during and after the events using the MiniVol Portable Air Sampler at a flow rate of 5 liters per minute. The highest PM$\_$2.5/ concentration measured during the YS period was 289 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, which is 13 times higher than the lowest of the values for the samples collected during the non-yellow sand period. The filter samples were analyzed for inorganic ions using the IC, AAS and Autoanalyzer, and for metals using the ICP-MS. The results showed that the concentrations of some inorganic ions (e.g., Ca$\^$2+/ and SO$_4$$\^$2-/) and metals (e.g., Fe, Mn) of soil origin were elevated during the yellow sand events.

  • Ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) was successfully used to produce a dense and ultra-adherent Hydroxyapatite (HA) film on titanium alloy and alumina. Recently it is also proved that the HA coatings on alumina substrate treated with 20 ppm $AgNO_3$ had the structure of $(Ag, Ca)_10(PO_4)6(OH)_2$, which exhibited excellent antimicrobial effects. The present paper aims to morphlogically characterize the adhesion of macrophages on newly developed Ag-HA coated alumina and Ti6A14V substrates and to evaluate the biocompatibility of the coatings in vitro. It can be found that the cell number on alumina of the concentration of $AgNO_3$ in the treatment, the cell number on Ag-HA coatings decreased. Up to 20 ppm $AgNO_3$ by Ag-treatment, the morphological development of the cells on Ag-HA coating was similar to that of the cells on HA coating, suggesting the biotolerance of the Ag-HA coatings.

  • Lipolytic characteristics of candia cylindracea lipase was studied by various triacylglycerols with different fatty acyl chains as substrate. The substrate was emulsified with gum arabic and the rate of hydrolysis was determined by pH stat method. The effects of gum concentration, pH, temperature, and $Ca^{2+}$ ion on the enzyme activities were examined. The results show that the effect of these factors are markedly depending on the structurla nature of substrates. The triolein was the best substrate among tested. Present study demonstrates that for characterization of lipolytic enzymes, it is critically important to select proper substrate and activator.r.

  • The microsomal fraction is isolated from rabbit heart and skeletal muscle. The fraction is found to contain the $Na^+$-and $K^+$-activated ATPase. The maximal ATPase activity is obtained in $Na^+$ and $K^+$ concentration of 100 mM. Calcium itself stimulates the $Na^+$-and $K^+$-activated portion of ATPase in the presence of $Mg^{++}$. However, calcium does not stimulate ATPase in the absence of $Mg^{++}$.

  • 본 논문에서는 용액의 농도가 이온교환 특성에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 농도는 $Na^+\;50$, 125, 250ppm, $Cl^-\;165$, 315, 610ppm, 입자성 물질의 유입 농도 0ppm, 유속 500ml/min, 이온교환 수지는 ROHM&HAAS IR 120 양이온 수지와 ROHM&HAAS IRA 402 음이온 수지를 사용하였다. 수지탑 배열은 혼상-혼상-음이온 수지탑 순으로, 이온교환 수지탑의 양 음이온교환 수지의 조성 비율은 1:2 로 실험한 결과 이온교환 수지탑 성능은 유입 용액 성분 및 농도에 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이온교환 수지탑 배열 순서에 따라 파과시점이 연장되며, 파과순서는 음이온의 경우 $Cl^-\;<\;NO_3\;^-\;<\;F^-$, 양이온의 경우 $Na^+\;<\;K^+\;<\;Ca^{2+}$ 순 이였으며, 용액의 농도가 증가할수록 파과시간이 단축되었다.

  • Optimal conditions of electroless nickel plating in acid baths has been studied for industrial applications of a developed EN solution. The phosphorus content in the deposition ranges from 8 to $12\;wt.\%$. The investigated EN plating parameters are ion concentrations of nickel and hypophosphite, concentration of reducing and complexing agent, temperature, and pH. The average plating rate of Ni-P deposition was ca. $14{\mu}m/h$. The EN solution used shows a deposition rate of $10{\mu}m/h$ up to seven metal turnovers.

Physicochemical factors affecting the adsorption of E. coli in estuarine sediments (하구퇴적토 환경에서 E.coli의 부착에 영향을 주는 물리화학적 요인)

  • The higher bacterial numbers on clay than on sand were caused by different environmental factors. Such factors affecting the adsorption of E. coli ATCC 11775 in the sediment as follows; optimal pH range for the adsorption of E. coli ATCC 11775 was pH 7.5-pH 9.5. E. coli ATCC 11775 were shown maxima in the salinity of 18.$75%_{o}$ on sand type sediment and $12.5%_{o}$ on clay type sediment. Bacteria attached better to clay typed sediment than to sand typed sediment when organic substance was eliminated. Beef extract of 0.5%-1% concentration was found to promote the attachment of E. coli ATCC 11775 effectively. Peptone of 0.5% was enganced the attachment on the clay, and peptone of 1.3%-5%, on the sand. E. coli ATCC 11775 was found to adsorb onto benthonite with the highest efficiency and on celite with the lowest efficiency. Efficiency of adsorption by inorganic ions was shown due to higher values of ion. Adsorption was achieved in the order of $Al^{3+}, Ca^{2+}, Na^{+}$.

  • The higher valence state of iron i.e., Fe(VI) was employed for the oxidation of one of an important toxic ion, cyanide in the aqueous medium. Cyanide was oxidized into cyanate, which is 1,000 times less toxic to cyanide and often accepted for its ultimate disposal. It was to be noted that Fe(VI) is a very powerful oxidizing agent and can oxidize most of the cyanide within few minutes i.e., ca 5 mins of contact. The data was obtained by the UV-Visible measurements for the Fe(VI) decomposition. The UV-Visible data was used to evaluate the overall rate constant for second order redox reaction between ferrate(VI) and cyanide. Also the pseudo first order rate constant was calculated as keeping the cyanide concentration in excess.
