  • This paper deals with an analytical study on the aileron reversal characteristics of anisotropic composite aircraft wings modelled as thin-walled beam and having extension-twist structural couplings caused by Circumferentially Uniform Stiffness (CUS) layup scheme. For a study on the aileron reversal of CUS composite wings, it is essential to consider the following effects such as extension-twist structural coupling, wing aspect ratio, and ratio of span-wise and chord-wise length of aileron to wing, initial angle of attack, and sweep angle, etc. The results on the aileron reversal could have a significant role in more efficient designs of thin-walled composite wing aircraft for which this aeroelastic instability is one of the most critical ones.

  • The bending vibration and thermal flutter instability of spacecraft booms modeled as circular thin-walled beams of closed cross-section and subjected to thermal radiation loading is investigated in this paper. The thin-walled beam model incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constituent materials. Thermally induced vibration response characteristics of a composite thin walled beam exhibiting the circumferantially uniform system(CUS) configuration are exploited in connection with the structural flapwise bending-lagwise bending coupling resulting from directional properties of fiber reinforced composite materials and from ply stacking sequence. The numerical simulations display deflection time-history as a function of the ply-angle of fibers of the composite materials, damping factor, incident angle of solar heat flux, as well as the boundary of the thermal flutter instability domain. The adaptive control are provided by a system of piezoelectric devices whose sensing and actuating functions are combined and that are bonded or embedded into the host structure.

  • Mathematical modeling and vibration control of a tiltrotor aircraft composite wing-rotor system are investigated in this study. A wing-mounted rotor can be tilted from the vertical position to a horizontal one, and vice versa. Effect of vibration control of the wing-rotor system via piezoelectricity is studied as a function of tilt angle, ply angle of composite wing and rotor's spin speed. Composite wing is modeled as a thin-walled box beam having a circumferentially uniform stiffness configuration that produces elastic coupling between flap-lag and between extension-twist behavior. Numerical simulations are provided and pertinent conclusions are outlined.

  • Thermal vibration characteristics of a thin walled composite beam attached on spacecraft are investigated in this paper. The composite beam is assumed to have a thin CUS(circumferentially uniform stiffness) wall and modeled with several composite materials which are already space qualified such as T300/Epoxy, YS90AEpoxy. Steady state angle and peak to peak error in spacecraft attitude angle and tip displacement of composite beams are evaluated as a performance index for thermal vibration characteristics. Evaluation results shows that composite beam made out of YS90A has nearly 2 times better than T300 in terms of peak to peak attitude error angle.

  • This paper deals with the vibration and stability of a circular cylindrical shaft, modeled as a tapered thin-walled composite beam and spinning with constant angular speed about its longitudinal axis, and subjected to an axial compressive force. Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method are employed to derive the governing equations of motion. The resulting eigenvalue problem is analyzed, and the stability boundaries are presented for selected taper ratios and axial compressive force combinations. Taking into account the directionality property of fiber reinforced composite materials, it is shown that for a shaft featuring flapwise-chordwise-bending coupling, a dramatic enhancement of both the vibration and stability behavior can be reached. It is found that by the structural tailoring and tapering, bending natural frequencies, stiffness and stability region can be significantly increased over those of uniform shafts made of the same material. In addition, the particular case of a classical beam with internal damping effect is also included.

  • The High efficiency video coding (HEVC) is the newest video coding standard that achieves coding efficiency higher than previous video coding standards such as H.264/AVC. In intra prediction, the prediction units (PUs) are derived from a large coding unit (LCU) which is partitioned into smaller coding units (CUs) sizing from 8x8 to 64x64 in a quad-tree structure. As they are divided until having the minimum depth, Optimum CU splitting is selected in RDO (Rate Distortion Optimization) process. In this process, HEVC demands high computational complexity. In this paper, to reduce the complexity of HEVC, we propose a fast CU mode decision (FCDD) for intra prediction by using FAST (Features from Accelerated Segment Test) corner detection. The proposed method reduces computational complexity with 53.73% of the computational time for the intra prediction while coding performance degradation with 0.7% BDBR is small compared to conventional HEVC.
