Design and Implementation of SDR-based Multi-Constellation Multi-Frequency Real-Time A-GNSS Receiver Utilizing GPGPU

  • Due to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) modernization, recently launched GNSS satellites transmit signals at various frequency bands such as L1, L2 and L5. Considering the Korean Positioning System (KPS) signal and other GNSS augmentation signals in the future, there is a high probability of applying more complex communication techniques to the new GNSS signals. For the reason, GNSS receivers based on flexible Software Defined Radio (SDR) concept needs to be developed to evaluate various experimental communication techniques by accessing each signal processing module in detail. This paper proposes a novel SDR-based A-GNSS receiver capable of processing multi-GNSS/RNSS signals at multi-frequency bands. Due to the modular structure, the proposed receiver has high flexibility and expandability. For real-time implementation, A-GNSS server software is designed to provide immediate delivery of satellite ephemeris data on demand. Due to the sampling bandwidth limitation of RF front-ends, multiple SDRs are considered to process the multi-GNSS/RNSS multi-frequency signals simultaneously. To avoid the overflow problem of sampled RF data, an efficient memory buffer management strategy was considered. To collect and process the multi-GNSS/RNSS multi-frequency signals in real-time, the proposed SDR A-GNSS receiver utilizes multiple threads implemented on a CPU and multiple NVIDIA CUDA GPGPUs for parallel processing. To evaluate the performance of the proposed SDR A-GNSS receiver, several experiments were performed with field collected data. By the experiments, it was shown that A-GNSS requirements can be satisfied sufficiently utilizing only milliseconds samples. The continuous signal tracking performance was also confirmed with the hundreds of milliseconds data for multi-GNSS/RNSS multi-frequency signals and with the ten-seconds data for multi-GNSS/RNSS single-frequency signals.

  • Recently the attention on digital hologram that is regarded as to be the final goal of the 3-dimensional video technology has been increased. A digital hologram can be generated with a depth and a RGB image. We proposed a new system to capture RGB and depth images and to convert them to digital holograms. First a new cold mirror was designed and produced. It has the different transmittance ratio against various wave length and can provide the same view and focal point to the cameras. After correcting various distortions with the camera system, the different resolution between depth and RGB images was adjusted. The interested object was extracted by using the depth information. Finally a digital hologram was generated with the computer generated hologram (CGH) algorithm. All algorithms were implemented with C/C++/CUDA and integrated in LabView environment. A hologram was calculated in the general-purpose computing on graphics processing unit (GPGPU) for high-speed operation. We identified that the visual quality of the hologram produced by the proposed system is better than the previous one.

Color2Gray using Conventional Approaches in Black-and-White Photography (전통적 사진 기법에 기반한 컬러 영상의 흑백 변환)

  • This paper presents a novel optimization-based saliency-preserving method for converting color images to grayscale in a manner consistent with conventional approaches of black-and-white photographers. In black-and-white photography, a colored filter called a contrast filter has been commonly employed on a camera to lighten or darken selected colors. In addition, local exposure controls such as dodging and burning techniques are typically employed in the darkroom process to change the exposure of local areas within the print without affecting the overall exposure. Our method seeks a digital version of a conventional contrast filter to preserve visually-important image features. Furthermore, conventional burning and dodging techniques are addressed, together with image similarity weights, to give edge-aware local exposure control over the image space. Our method can be efficiently optimized on GPU. According to the experiments, CUDA implementation enables 1 megapixel color images to be converted to grayscale at interactive frames rates.

GPU-ACCELERATED SPECKLE MASKING RECONSTRUCTION ALGORITHM FOR HIGH-RESOLUTION SOLAR IMAGES

  • The near real-time speckle masking reconstruction technique has been developed to accelerate the processing of solar images to achieve high resolutions for ground-based solar telescopes. However, the reconstruction of solar subimages in such a speckle reconstruction is very time-consuming. We design and implement a new parallel speckle masking reconstruction algorithm based on the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) on General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU). Tests are performed to validate the correctness of our program on NVIDIA GPGPU. Details of several parallel reconstruction steps are presented, and the parallel implementation between various modules shows a significant speed increase compared to the previous serial implementations. In addition, we present a comparison of runtimes across serial programs, the OpenMP-based method, and the new parallel method. The new parallel method shows a clear advantage for large scale data processing, and a speedup of around 9 to 10 is achieved in reconstructing one solar subimage of $256{\times}256pixels$. The speedup performance of the new parallel method exceeds that of OpenMP-based method overall. We conclude that the new parallel method would be of value, and contribute to real-time reconstruction of an entire solar image.

  • It is imperative to migrate the current public key cryptosystem to a quantum-resistance system ahead of the realization of large-scale quantum computing technology. The National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST, is promoting a public standardization project for Post-Quantum Cryptography(PQC) and also many research efforts have been conducted to apply PQC to TLS(Transport Layer Security) protocols, which are used for Internet communication security. In this paper, we propose a scenario in which a server and multi-clients share session keys on TLS by using the parallelized NTRU which is PQC in the key exchange process. In addition, we propose a method of accelerating NTRU using GPU and analyze its efficiency in an environment where a server needs to process large-scale data simultaneously.

Implementation of FFT on Massively Parallel GPU for DVB-T Receiver (DVB-T 수신기를 위한 대규모 병렬처리 GPU 기반의 FFT 구현)

  • Recently various research have been conducted relating to the implementation of signal processing or communication system by software using the massively parallel processing capability of the GPU. In this work, we focus on reducing software simulation time of 2K/8K FFT in DVB-T by using GPU. we estimate the processing time of the DVB-T system, which is one of the standards for DTV transmission, by CPU. Then we implement the FFT processing by the software using the NVIDIA's massively parallel GPU processor. In this paper we apply stream process method to reduce the overhead for data transfer between CPU and GPU, coalescing method to reduce the global memory access time and data structure design method to maximize the shared memory usage. The results show that our proposed method is approximately 20~30 times as fast as the CPU based FFT processor, and approximately 1.8 times as fast as the CUFFT library (version 2.1) which is provided by the NVIDIA when applied to the DVB-T 2K/8K mode FFT.

Implementation of Massive FDTD Simulation Computing Model Based on MPI Cluster for Semi-conductor Process (반도체 검증을 위한 MPI 기반 클러스터에서의 대용량 FDTD 시뮬레이션 연산환경 구축)

  • In the semi-conductor process, a simulation process is performed to detect defects by analyzing the behavior of the impurity through the physical quantity calculation of the inner element. In order to perform the simulation, Finite-Difference Time-Domain(FDTD) algorithm is used. The improvement of semiconductor which is composed of nanoscale elements, the size of simulation is getting bigger. Problems that a processor such as CPU or GPU cannot perform the simulation due to the massive size of matrix or a computer consist of multiple processors cannot handle a massive FDTD may come up. For those problems, studies are performed with parallel/distributed computing. However, in the past, only single type of processor was used. In GPU's case, it performs fast, but at the same time, it has limited memory. On the other hand, in CPU, it performs slower than that of GPU. To solve the problem, we implemented a computing model that can handle any FDTD simulation regardless of size on the cluster which consist of heterogeneous processors. We tested the simulation on processors using MPI libraries which is based on 'point to point' communication and verified that it operates correctly regardless of the number of node and type. Also, we analyzed the performance by measuring the total execution time and specific time for the simulation on each test.
