  • Alzheimer's disease(AD) is a geriatric dementia that is widespread in old age. In the near future AD will be the biggest problem in public health service. Although a variety of oriental prescriptions in study Jeonmaedan have been traditionally utilized for the treatment of AD, their pharmacological effects and action mechanisms have not yet fully elucidated. It has been widely believed that A${\beta}$ peptide devided from APP causes apoptotic neurotoxicity in AD brain. However, recent evidence suggests that CTl05(carboxy terminal 105 amino acid peptide fragment of APP) may be an important factor causing neurotoxicity in AD. In addition, AD is one of brain degeneration disease. So we studied on herbal medicine that have a relation of brain degeneration. In Oriental Medicine, Jeonmaedan has been used for disease in relation to brain degeneration. As the result of this study, in Jeonmaedan the apoptosis in the nervous system is inhibited, the repair against the degerneration of SK-N-SH cell lines by CT105 expression is promoted. So Jeonmaedan may be beneficial for the treatment of AD.

  • In an attempt to identify the neuroprotective effect of Cudrania tricuspidata (CT) leaves against ROS (reactive oxygen species)-induced oxidative stress in neuronal cells, the extracts from CT leaves were investigated using PC12 cells and N18-RE-105 cells. The methanolic and ethanolic extracts from CT were denoted as CTM (Cudrania tricuspidata Leaves methanolic extracts) and CTE (Cudrania tricuspidata Leaves ethanolic extracts), respectively. The neuroprotective effects of the extracts were measured by DCF-DA assay, MTT reduction assay, and LDH release assay. The PC12 cells exposed to $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress and the N18-RE-105 cells exposed to glutamate-induced oxidative stress were treated with various concentrations of CTM and CTE. The results, CTM treatments resulted in the induction of a dose-dependent protective effect in PC12 cells and N18-RE-105 cells. Interestingly, CTE also showed neuroprotective effect in PC12 cells and N18-RE-105 cells. Therefore, these results suggest that CTM and CTE could be a new potential candidate as neuroprotective agents against ROS-induced oxidative stress in neuronal cells.

  • A medical personnel could be placed beside a patient together in CT room to do Ambu-bag for a seriously ill patients or emergency patient. At this time, the medical personnel can be exposed indirect radiation unnecessarily. In this case, it is necessary to recognize indirect radiation dose levels and methods to reduce them using actual clinical CT protocols such as Chest, Abdomen, and Brain CT. We researched surface radiation dose with or without radiation protectors such as apron and goggles according to different distances far from gantry using two different CT scanners (Fixed MDCT and mobile CT). As a result, for Chest, Abdomen, and Brain CT with Fixed MDCT, indirect radiation dose on thorax portion were 0.047, 0.089, 0.034 mSv without apron. Also, those with apron were 0.007, 0.012, 0.006 mSv. In case of mobile CT, it was 0.014 mSv without apron and 0.005 mSv with apron. By using protectors and increasing the distance, we could reduce it to 97%. Systematic management is necessary based on the measured data in order to minimize radiation damage due to indirect exposure dose.

  • A 4-year-old cat was referred for a suspected pulmonary mass. True diaphragmatic hernia presence was diagnosed via computed tomography (CT). There was a thin membrane covering the diaphragmatic defect. The membrane was thinner than the diaphragm. After contrast injection, the membrane was less enhanced than that of the normal diaphragm. The membrane was identified as a remnant of the parietal pleura. In addition, contrast-enhanced CT images provided clarity in viewing the herniated liver and falciform fat. A thinner membrane, covering the diaphragmatic defect, and attached to the thicker normal diaphragm, is considered a unique CT feature of true diaphragmatic hernia.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the relative diagnostic accuracy of panoramic radiography and Water's projection in maxillary sinus inflammatory diseases by comparing the radiodensities of the images with those of CT. Materials and Methods : Panoramic radiographs, Waters' projection, and CT images from 55 subjects (11O sinuses) were included in this retrospective study. The radiodensity of each maxillary sinus in panoramic radiography was recorded separately as upper and lower divided horizontally by hard palate. In Waters' projection, the overall sinus radiodensity was recorded. The CT images were considered as gold standard. Results : In panoramic radiography, 83 sinuses had same upper and lower radiodensity and 72 of these were consistent with those of CT, 26 sinuses had different upper and lower radiodensity and 15 of these, upper radiodensity was consistent with CT, the remaining 11, lower radiodensity was consistent with CT. One sinus had upper radiolucency with lower radiopacity and both were consistent with those of CT. Altogether 73 (66.4%) among 110 sinuses in panoramic radiography showed full agreement with CT, 26 (23.6%) showed partial agreement with CT. 9 sinuses had no lower image under the hard palate in panoramic radiography due to the smaller size of sinus. In Waters' projection, the radiodensity of 105 sinuses (95.5%) were consistent with that of CT. Conclusion : The panoramic radiography showed 90.0% of the sinus conditions fully or partially which may appear less accurate than that of Water's view (95.5%) but with more detailed information of the inferior part of sinuses.
