  • Nano-wear and friction of carbon overcoated laser-textured and mechanically-textured computer hard disk were characterised after contact start/stop (CSS) wear test. Various analytical and mechanical testing techniques were employed to study the changes in topography, roughness, chemical elements, mechanical properties and friction characteristics of the coating arising from the contact start/stop wear test These techniques include: the atomic force microscopy (AFM), the continuous nano-indentation test, the nano-scratch test, the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) and the auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It was shown that the surface roughness of the laser-textured (LT) bump and mechanically textured (MT) Bone was reduced approximately am and 7nm, respectively, after the CSS wear test. The elastic modulus and hardness values increased after the CSS test, indicating straining hardening of the top coating layer, A critical load was also identified fer adhesion failure between the magnetic layer and the Ni-P layer, The TOF-SIMS analysis also revealed some reduction in the intensity of C and $C_2$$F_59$, confirming the wear of lubricant elements on the coating surface.

AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy), Nano-Indentation, Nano-Scratch, TOF-SIMS(Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy), AES(Auger Electronic Spectroscopy)등이 이 연구에 적용되었다.

  • In recent years the recording density of hard disk has been increasing largely due to the decreasing flying height of head. However, as the flying height is decreased the reliability issue becomes ever more critical. This is because the reliability and durability of hard disk is related to the head/disk interaction as the two components come into partial or full contact. In this work characteristics of friction and stiction in head/disk interface was investigated using constant speed drag test and CSS(contact-start-stop) test. The purpose of this research is to identify the frictional properties of head/disk interface

  • Tribological investigation of ultra thin film magnetic storage disks which have two different kinds of start/stop zone of laser textured bump disk and mechanically textured disk for before CSS test and after CSS test. To measure surface roughness, height reduction before/after CSS test and obtain accurate topographies, AFM(Atomic Force Microscope) which is most powerful recently has been used. The result of statistical analysis showed that both laser textured bump height and mechanically textured zone height have been reduced about 4~7nm after 15000 cycle CSS test. Using commercial Nano-Indenter, ramping load scratch test has been performed to investigate friction characteristic for laser textured zone and mechanically textured zone before/after CSS test.

  • Dynamic Load/unload (L/UL) mechanism is an alternative to the contact start stop (CSS) technology which eliminates striction and wear failure modes associated with CSS. Inertia latch mechanism becomes important for mobile disk drives because of non operating shock performance. Various types of latch designs have been introduced in hard disk drives to limit a rotary actuator from sudden uncontrolled motion. In this paper, a single spring inertia latch is introduced for a small form optical disk drive, which uses a rotary actuator for moving an optical pick-up. A new small inertia latch with sin91e spring is designed to ensure both feasible and small size. The shock performance of the new inertia latch is experimentally verified.

  • Acoustic emission(AE) signal has been widely utilized to monitor the interaction at the head/disk interface. In this work the relationship between the AE signal and the state of contact between the slider and the disk is presented. Results of the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analyses of the AE signal could be used to better understand the interfacial interaction. Also, it was found that wear particles affect the AE signal. Therefore, the signal can be used to monitor the wear particle presence at the interface.

  • Dynamic Load/unload (L/UL) mechanism is an alternative to the contact start stop (CSS) technology which eliminates stiction and wear failure modes associated with CSS. Other benefits of L/UL include increased areal density due to smooth disk surfaces, thinner overcoats, and lower head flying height Improved shock resistance due to elimination of head slap, and reduced power consumption. Inertia latch mechanism becomes important for mobile disk drives because of non operating shock performance. • As a means to reduce stiction in the landing zone padded sliders can be used. In this work the performance of padded slider was investigated using a commercial spin stand. The friction and acoustic emission signals were measured during the experiment. It is shown that padded slider show superior friction and AE characteristics. However, the wear properties of the pads should be further Improved.

  • In order to analysis contact mechanism of head/ disk interface on hard disk drive, many techniques of analysis have been developed. Acoustic Emission sensor can be used for detect elastic energy of contact at head/disk interface. This work presents a good understanding of slider characteristics in frequency domain. The results show that torsional and bending mode of slider are dominant in head/disk contact.
