  • Purpose : Matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-9 is known to breakdown the blood-brain barrier by degrading the extracellular matrix of the subendothelial basement membrane in meningitis. Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase(TIMP)-1, a known inhibitor of MMP-9, has been postulated to inhibit the proteolytic activity of MMP-9 by bindng to MMP-9, but their interaction has not been fully understood yet. So far, there have been some reports on the relationship of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in bacterial meningitis, but few reports in viral meningitis. Furthermore, there has been no report on this in Korea. We investigated the concentrations of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of patients with viral meningitis and control subjects, and evaluated their relationship with other clinical parameters of meningitis. Methods : CSF and blood were obtained from 25 subjects with viral meningitis and 14 control subjects. After centrifugation, supernatants were stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ and we assayed concentrations of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 by the sandwich ELISA method. Results : Concentrations of CSF MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were significantly elevated in patients with viral meningitis, when compared with those in control subjects. Their serum levels showed no differences between the two groups. MMP-9 levels were closely correlated with TIMP-1 levels in the CSF($r_s=0.42$, P<0.05). CSF MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratios were significantly higher in patients with viral meningitis than those in the control subjects(P<0.05). Both CSF MMP-9 and TIMP-1 levels positively correlated with CSF total leukocyte counts($r_s=0.43$, P<0.05, $r_s=0.48$, P<0.05). TIMP-1 levels positively correlated with total protein concentrations in the CSF($r_s=0.43$, P<0.05). Conclusion : MMP-9 and TIMP-1 may play an important role in the breakdown and maintenance of BBB in viral meningitis, respectively.

  • This paper emphasizes on the accomplishment of compensated proton density image and T2 weighted image taken from the shrinkage surface of the Brain. From the images, the Brain's surface shrinkage in the normal image and the surface shrinkage in the abnormal image can be observed. After the separation of white matter, gray matter, and CSF, this algorithm calculates the volume of each of them automatically. Results are subdivided into particular ages and saved in the database to be analyzed and to be processed statistically. Therefore, by using this algorithm the normal and abnormal stages can be detected in the early stages to diagnose. This result easily discernment Alzheimer patient and is useful for Alzheimer diagnostic and early detection.

  • The purpose of this study is to focus on developing the performance indicators for the distribution of scholarly information based on BSC and to analyze the importance of the performance indicators against the specialists. From the case studies on performance indicators both at home and abroad four viewpoints(information resource, information service, user, and economy) were derived. In addition. the core success factors(CSF) and key performance indicators(KPI) were extracted from the viewpoints. Four viewpoints are composed of 12 CSF items and 31 KPI items. In order to analyze the weight of the performance indicators. questions were thrown to the specialists in universities and research institutes. For the method of analysis, analytic hierarchy process(AHP) was adopted. As a result, the analysis showed that the user viewpoint, information service viewpoint, information resource viewpoint and economic viewpoint are in the order of their importance.

  • Recently many Hotels have implemented and operated the Hotel Information System(HIS). These HIS-implementation evoke the significant changes in hotel management. So many interest and researches in HIS has received the spotlight from the hotel managements. Many researcher about HIS focused on the Critical Success Factors (CSF) from the viewpoint of HIS implementation. At this moment we need also the research about significance change of CSF with the laps of time. This kind of research are very critical for the successful operation of HIS. To achieve the objectives of this paper, the Innovation-Theory of E. M. Roger was implemented. As the result of this research we can get the various maturity point of each CSF with the laps of time. For the data gathering many major hotel in Korea were interviewed, and 84 valid questionaires were used for data analysis. The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ was 0.7239, which means all data were significant.

  • Purpose : This study aimed to examine the factors influencing the appearance of headache and backache following diagnostic lumbar puncture in children, focusing on the need for strict bed rest after lumbar puncture. Methods : We studied 70 two-fifteen-year-old pediatric patients who underwent diagnostic lumbar puncture from July 2005 to July 2007 at Konkuk University Hospital. We divided them into two groups. Patients in the first group (n=24) were allowed free mobility and patients in the second group (n=46) were to have strict bed rest for four hours after puncture. Data were analyzed by age, sex, number of puncture attempts, cell counts and pressure in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), duration of bed rest, and occurrence of headache and backache. Results : The rate of complications was not significantly related to sex, age, presence of enterovirus, CSF pressure, or postural headache. The occurrence of headache was significantly correlated with white blood cell (WBC) count in CSF (P=0.043). Symptom frequency did not differ significantly between the groups. Backache was significantly related to the frequency of puncture attempts (P=0.046). Conclusion : Strict bed rest following diagnostic lumbar puncture in children does not influence headaches and backaches. These are respectively related to the WBC count on the CSF profile and the frequency of attempts. Therefore, after lumbar puncture, absolute bed rest is not necessary and patients are more comfortable with free mobility.

  • To investigate contributory factors of CSF shunt failure, 237 patients, who underwent shunt placement from January 1995 to December 1998 at our hospital, were reviewed retrospectively. The causes of the hydrocephalus were tumor, hemorrhage, infection, congenital anomaly, normal pressure hydrocephalus, trauma and others. One hundred nine revisions of CSF shunting were done during follow up periods. The causes of shunt revisions were mechanical obstruction, malposition, infection and others. The contributory factors of CSF shunt failure and shunt survival rate were analyzed using SPSS. The shunt survival rate at 1, 2 and 3 years after procedure was 77.1%, 75.4%, 74.1% respectively. In the young age group below 10 years old, postinfectous hydrocephalus was the most common high risk factor for shunt revision. In conclusion, the most shunt failures developed in the first year after surgery and the age and causes of the hydrocephalus were major determinant factors of shunt revision.

  • The goal of this paper is to set up the rank list of the critical success factors according to its weights. To get the empirical data for this research, the Internet-based questionnaires were performed. This research is carried out in two steps. At first step, the critical success factors(CSF) are crystallized through factor analysis methods. To find out the weights and ranks of critical success factors in second step, the analytical hierarchical process(AHP) method were performed. The order list of all CSFs will be determined according to their priorities. This order list shows which factors have the most useful influence on the performance and success of SCM. This result could play the role as milestone for the effective management of Supply Chain Management System in korean manufacturing company.

  • In this study, biosugar production by the red-algae Eucheuma cottonii was investigated using dilute sulfuric acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and data analysis by response surface methodology. This approach yielded 25.8 g/l total reducing sugar under the conditions of $160.1^{\circ}C$, 1% (v/v) sulfuric acid, and 13.1 min. The sugar concentration showed a linear inverse correlation with the combined severity factor (CSF) of the reaction conditions. CSF was calculated as $log(t{\cdot}e{xp}[(T_H-T_R)/14.75])-pH$, where t is the coupling reaction time, $T_H$ is the target temperature, and $T_R$ is the reference temperature ($100^{\circ}C$). In addition, levulinic acid production showed a linear positive correlation with CSF. E. cottonii may represent a useful feedstock for sugar production in the field of bioenergy.
