  • This report describes thick traveling-wave electrode formation and microwave transmission characteristics of the fabricated electrodes. Effective refractive indices of the microwave in the 5 micron CPW type traveling-wave electrodes is around 2.45 according to the results of time domain S parameter measurements. The bandwidth of the electrodes is about 10 GHz and could be extended to 15 GHz through optimization of the process. The developed process technique that enables plating of micropatterns upto 20 micron can be applied to broadband optical intensity modulators.

  • A traveling-wave CPW(coplanar waveguide) electrode with abruptly broken input/output-taper for LiNbO$_3$optical modulator was designed and fabricated. The electrical characteristics of traveling-wave electrode on z-cut LiNbO$_3$crystal with SiO$_2$buffer layers were measured by network analyzer. To confirm the possibility of the electro-optic modulator electrode, detailed calculations of the impedance, microwave effective index and attenuation constants are presented as a function of the microwave electrode thickness, but the buffer layer thickness is fixed as 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. These characteristics are discussed from the viewpoint of the device optimization and are expected to be design guides for the LiNbO$_3$modulator’s electrodes.

  • We employ the SOR method to analyze CPW electrodes of Ti:$LiNbO_3$ Mach-Zehnder traveling-wave optical modulator in the tapered region of an optical modulator. In the tapered region of the modulator, we design the electrodes satisfying $Z_c=50{\Omega}$. In the modulation region, we find two find sets of design parameters. One set is for $Z_c=50{\Omega}$, $n_{eff}=2.26$ and the another is for $n_{eff}=2.2$, $Z_c=47.7{\Omega}$.

  • Design of the optical modulator composed of a three-waveguide coupler and CPW traveling-wave electrodes was carried out. Switching phenomena of three-waveguide couplers were analyzed by using the coupled mode theory, and the coupling-lengths of the devices were calculated by means of the FDM. CPW traveling-wave electrodes were analysed by the CMM and SOR simulation technique in order to find the conditions of phase-velocity and impedance matching. Traveling-wave modulators were fabricated on z-cut LiNbO$_3$ substrate. Ti was in-diffused in LiNbO$_3$ to make waveguides and Au electrodes were built on the waveguides by the electrolyte technique. The fabricated modulator chip was end-polished, pig-tailed and packaged in a brass mount with K-connector. The insertion loss and the switching voltage of the optical modulator were about 4㏈ and 19V, respectively. Network analyzer was used to obtain the S parameter and the corresponding RF response. From the measurement, parameters of the traveling-wave electrodes were extracted to be Z$_{c}$= 45 Ω, N$_{eff}$=2.20, and $\alpha$$_{0}$=0.055/cm√GHZ. The measured optical response R($\omega$) was compared with the theoretically estimated one, showing both responses agree well. The measurement results revealed that 3㏈ bandwidth turned out to be about 13 GHz.

From the measurement, parameters of the traveling-wave electrodes were extracted as such Z$_{c}$=39.2 $\Omega$, Neff=2.48, and a0=0.0665/cm((GHz) (1/2)). The measured optical response R(w) was compared with the theoretically estimated and both responses were shown to agree well. • Microwave characteristics of ridge type CPW traveling-wave(TW) electroabsorption modulator and photodetector are affected by the thickness of intrinsic layer, width of guiding layer, and the separation of signal and ground electrodes. These factors are determined effective index of microwave and characteristic impedance due to changing of capacitance(C) and inductance(L) of device. However, conventional equivalent circuit of TW-structure is approximated to microstrip and CPW transmission line by distribution of electric and magnetic fields, respectively. In this paper, we analyzed microwave characteristics of TW-structure and found more accurate value of C and L by using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. These values are adopted circuit element of equivalent circuit. Microwave characteristics obtained by the FDTD and equivalent circuit model show good agreement.

  • The characteristics of traveling-wave electrodes for high-frequency electroptic integrated devices are described from the view point of improvement of phase-matching based on the conformal mapping method. Specific calculations of the characteristic impedance, effective microwave index, and eletrode loss for asymmetric coplanar strip(ACPS) and coplanar waveguide(CPW) electrode structures are presented as a function of the geometric electrode parameters including the electrode thickness and buffer layer thickness. 5-10(x10S0-6Tm) thick Au-ACPS electrodes were successfully fabricated by electroplating and ECR etcher. The improvement of modulation bandwidth can be theoretically observed from the combination of electrode and buffer layer thickness.

  • Traveling-wave electrodes for the high-speed Ti:LiNbO$_{3}$ modulators are designed. For a solution to the problems of 1) phase-velocity mismatching between the optical wave and the Modulating M/W, 2) M/W electrode characteristic impedance mismateching, we assume devices with 1$\mu$m thick SiO$_{2}$ buffer layer between the electrode and the Ti:LiNbO$_{3}$ substrate. The electrode analyses are performed by the FEM using the second-order triangular elements. The optimum design parameters to satisfy the phase-velocity matching and the characteristic impedance matching are sought for. By use of the analyses' results, a Mach-Zehnder optical modulator with a CPW electrode is designed as an example. the band-width estimation is also illustrated.

  • In this paper, methods of designing CPW(coplanar waveguide) traveling-wave electrodes are described and their properties are discussed. Especially, the effect of buffer layer thickness to the microwave characteristics of the CPW electrodes are studied in detail. The trade-off relationship between buffer layer thickness and electro-optical properties of the devices are clearly revealde. The microwave characteristics and driving voltage can be further improved by using selected parameters suggested in this paper. To reduce time and effort in designing CPW electrode structure, exact analytical models are proposed.
