  • This study used the commercial fishing data of Korean high sea bottom longline vessels in the South West Atlantic Ocean from 2013 to 2019 to identify the distribution of fishing grounds of Korean longline vessels. We estimated the CPUE of the Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides and the changes in its stock status. The fishing grounds of Korean longline vessels were observed to concentrate on the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) boundary between Argentina, Uruguay, and Falkland owing to the high seas of 41-55 °S in the south and 49-60 °W in the west. A high intensity of fishing was seen in the middle area, which was horizontal from the 3.1 subarea. In all the three subareas, CPUEs have had the tendency to decline since 2013. Although the CPUEs in the 3.2.1-2 subareas were the highest in each subarea, there was no significant difference in each subarea (P>0.05). It is believed that the establishment of a regional fisheries organization or the strengthening of the management of FAO is necessary for the management of Southwest Atlantic fisheries and sustainable fishing, because the portion and scope of Korean longline vessels are very low in the Southwest Atlantic; however, the CPUE is estimated to have declined.

  • The southern coast of the East Sea is an important area affected by large warm currents as it connects the coastal waters of Jeju Island, the South Sea, and Dokdo. From 2017 to 2021, the average catch per unit effort (CPUE; kg/day/ship) of set net fishery at six ports in the Gyeongbuk region off the southern coast of the East Sea was the highest in Gampo, Gyeongju, and the lowest in Hupo, Uljin. Although the seasonal variation in the CPUE differed by region and year, it was generally high in autumn. In the set net fishery in Pohang from 2019 to 2021, we identified 72 species, which decreased to 56 species in 2019, 46 in 2020, and 41 in 2021. The species diversity index slightly increased over the three-year periods. We found positive correlations between the total catch (kg) of subtropical species in autumn and the water temperature at 50 m. Among the most abundant species, we found substantially positive correlations between the CPUE of Scomber japonicus, Scomberomous spp. and Carangids. We also noted positive correlations between the CPUE of Todarodes pacificus, Seriola spp. and Carangids.

  • This paper was carried out from 15 June to 24 December in 2000 in Lake İznik of Turkey, to determine catch per unit effort (CPUE) and size composition of crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus Eschscholtz 1823, captured by fyke-nets of local fishermen. The average CPUE of all size groups was found as 1.65 crayfish/fyke-net/night for fishing season in 2000, but 26.4% of which was below the legal minimum size (crayfish<90 mm). The average CPUE of legal-sized (crayfish$\geq$90 mm) crayfish was 1.10 crayfish/fykenet/night. The annual catch of crayfish was estimated as 2990 tonnes. The length and weight compositions of crayfish captured in the fyke-nets have varied between 60 and 130 mm, and 6 and 71 g, respectively. The mean length and weight were found as 95.5 mm and 28.8 g for all size groups and 100.1 mm and 33.0 g for legal-sized individuals.

  • Mackerel purse seine fishery operating in the sea area of Cheju and Tsushima is one of the most important fishery in Korean off shore fishery, which a fishing fleet are generally composed with one purse seiner, two light ships and three or four fish carriers. In this study, purse seiners are classified in to four classes in term of their gross tonnage : A class(80-100tons), B class(100-120tons), C class(130-140tons), and D class(140-150tons). Operating sea area are divided into five sectors including east and west sea area of Tsushima Island, coastal sea area of Cheju Island and south and west sea area of Cheju Island. The performance of the purse seiner, the fishing efficiency, the dimension of fishing gear and variation of CPUE in each operating sea area are summarized as follows: 1. The relationship between a gross tonnage x and net area of purse seine y of a purse seiner can be expressed as : y=538.8x+99657.3 2. The index of seasonal variation of CPUE from May to October is lower than the standard value, whereas index from November to April is higher. 3. The power factor of fishing efficiency by classes of boat-size shows significant differences with 1% level in each operating sea area. 4. The net efficiency of purse seiner by classes of boat-sea shows that B and C classes are higher than A and D classes.

  • Present study was conducted to improve the spring frame net trap for conger eel, Conger myriaster which prevents by-catch and protects immature fish. A series of comparative fishing experiment was carried out in water off the south-east coast of Korea from Nov. 2004 to Jul. 2005. And analyzed the amount of catch, by-catch rate, and CPUE, etc. of experimental traps which were the spring frame net traps, sorted four types of flappers. And the compared gear was a plastic conger eel pot. The conclusions were as follows. By-catch rates of spring frame net trap with the compressed flapper bound by nylon mono-filament was about 0-3%. CPUE of spring frame net trap with the compressed flapper was about 50-60% lower than that of traditional and plastic pot. And in case of conger eel that the total length is over 350mm, CPUE was little different on each type of flapper of every mesh size.

  • The catch per unit effort and the migration of Alaska pollack Theragra chalcogramma were deduced from the catch data of 1, 208 hauls of a stern trawler operated on and around the continental shelf east of the Kamchatka Peninsula and Kurile Islands from October 1974 to December 1975. Alaska pollack occupied more than ninety per cent of the total catch of approximately 17, 760 metric tons, while the cuttle and flat fishes occupied less than five percent. Beside those fishes, approximately 131 metric tons of Alaska pollack roe were produced during the voyage from February to April 1975. The mean catch per unit effort in each sub-area of fishing ground was approximately 15.5 metric tons and the peak of the CPUE occured in January and August. The CPUE in the continental shelf east of Kamchatka Peninsula ($50^{\circ}- 52^{\circ} N$ Lat) showed the maximum of 25-34 metric tons in August. The main fish school is thought to migrate southward speedily in August-September along the continental shelf from the Kamchatka Peninsula to the east of Kurile Islands. The CPUE on the continental shelf east of Kamchatka Peninsula was higher than that on the steeper continental slope. However, the CPUE on the steeper flank of the bank east of Paramushiru Island and Onekotan Island was remarkably higher than that on the relatively flat top of the bank. The small-sized fishes of less than thirty centimeter in fork length began to recruit in the fishing ground since August 1965.

  • In an attempt to find the improvement of the fishing efficiency according to the hull form remodeling for the 3 tuna purse seiner, the Catch-Per-Unit-Effort (CPUE) for that undertaken before (2008) and after (2010) was analyzed. In addition, the CPUE of 6 similar ships operated same period and same fishing ground. As result, it came to verify that the three modified ships had a significant value on the CPUE. An another index for the improvement of fishing efficiency is the rate of reduction of fuel oil consumption for the modified ships. Fuel oil consumption per day in service speed as comparing with the original ships were reduced 2.1%, 4.0% and 5.1% on the modified ship A, B, and C respectively. And each ship's service speed was increased 1.0 kt, 0.6 kt, and 0.4 kt according to the modified ship A, B, and C in due order. In the conclusion, the remodeling job with newly equipped bulbous bow, lengthened slipway and enlarged rudder area were improved fairly much on fuel oil efficiency, the ship's speed, and in the end, that led to the improving fishing efficiency. Hence, the remodeling of tuna purse seiner come to improve not only the fishing performance, but contribute to the reduction of operating cost by saving energy for the fisheries industry.

  • To clarify relationships between the abundance and biological characteristics of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp., we analyzed spatiotemporal changes in fork length, body weight, and an index of relative abundance (catch per unit effort, CPUE) for pink salmon (O. gorbuscha), chum salmon (O. keta), and sockeye salmon (O. nerka) collected by research gill-nets from the T/V Oshoro-maru and the T/V Hokusei-maru of Hokkaido University in the North Pacific during 1953-2007. Populations of each species were distributed throughout the western Bering Sea, eastern Bering Sea (EB), western North Pacific (WNP), central North Pacific (CNP), eastern North Pacific (ENP), and Okhotsk Sea. Since 1970, the average body size of chum salmon at ocean ages 0.3-0.4 has generally declined in the WNP and CNP. However, the average body sizes of sockeye and pink salmon have not shown temporal changes. Chum salmon showed significant negative (positive) correlations between CPUE and body size for populations in CNP (ENP) at ocean ages 0.2-0.3 (age 0.1) for both sexes. In general, sockeye salmon also showed significant negative (positive) correlations between CPUE and body size for populations in the EB at ocean ages X.2-X.3 (age X.1) for both sexes, except in CNP at age 2. Our results suggest that better growth by chum and sockeye salmon in the early periods of their ocean life histories might produce higher abundance. This higher abundance, which might also be affected by overlapping distributions among Pacific salmon species and populations in certain seas, in turn appears to cause density-dependent declines in growth in the following ocean life history period due to the limited carrying capacity of the seas. To understand complex dynamics in Pacific salmon species in the North Pacific Ocean, research on interactions among species and populations is needed.

  • Deep-sea fishery in the Antarctic Ocean has been actively progressed by the developed countries including Korea. In order to prevent the environmental destruction of the Antarctic Ocean, related countries have established the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and have monitored any illegal unreported or unregulated fishing. Fishing of tooth fish, an expensive fish, in the Antarctic Ocean has increased recently and high catches per unit effort (CPUE) of fishing boats, which is suspicious for an illegal activity, have been frequently reported. The data of CPUEs in a fishing area of the Antarctic Ocean often show an extreme Distribution or a mixture of two extreme distributions. This paper proposes an algorithm to detect an outlier of CPUEs by using the mixture of two extreme distributions. The parameters of the mixture distribution are estimated by the EM algorithm. Log likelihood value and posterior probabilities are used to detect an outlier. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm to detect outlier of the data can be adopted instead of simple criteria such as a CPUE is greater than 1.
