  • Free energy based lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has been used to simulate the contact angle and the bubble necking with large density ratio. LBM with the proper contact angle model is able to reduce the spurious currents and eliminate the singularity in the contact lines. The numerical results of the contact angles are satisfied with the Youngs law. For bubble necking flows, simulations are executed for various viscosities and contact angles. The phenomena of the bubble necking are simulated successfully and the subsequent results are presented. The present method is also applicable to the nucleate boiling flows.

  • In order to produce a water repellent surface on polyester fabric, samples were treated in the atmosphere of $CF_4$ glow discharge plasma. The samples used in the study were ployester fabric and poyester film. The purpose of film treatment is for the comparison of hydrophobicity with fabric sample at same treatment condition. Radio frequency(13.56MHz) generator was used as electric source and its in put power is 100 Watt. Water repellency was evaluated by contact angle measurement. Result obtained are as follows. 1) Fiber interstice of original fabric was ana lysed as 0.43$\mu$m, and this value was sufficiently ideal for making water repellent fabric. 2) The most favorable setting position of substrate was the center area between two electrodes. 3) Fabric contact angle was higher than film contact angle at same treatment condition, and its difference was more than 50${\circ}$. And it was incapalbe of fabric contact angle measurement when the film contact angle was less than 90${\circ}$. because the fabric is susceptible to absorption of water by the capillary effect. 4) Fabric contact angle can not revealed the precise defferences of surface hydrophobicity, however, the film contact angle showed the real hydrophobic nature. 5) It was not sufficient method to evaluate the hydrophobicity of fabric surface by merely measure of the water contact angle. 6) It showed high water repellent nature at 0.06 torr of $CF_4$ plasma gas pressure and duration of 45 seconds treatment, and it can not be anticipated more improved nature if the pressure and duration of treatment time were increased.

  • The wettability of silicon carbide (SiC) crystal, which has 6H-SiC and 4H-SiC regions prepared using the physical vapor transport (PVT) method, is quantitatively analyzed using dispensed deionized (DI) water droplets. Regardless of the polytypes in SiC, the average of five contact angle measurements showed a difference of about 6° between the Si-face and C-face. The contact angle on the Si-face (C-face) is measured after the removal of the native oxide using BOE (6:1), and revealed a significant decrease of the contact angle from 74.9° (68.4°) to 47.7° (49.3°) and from 75.8° (70.2°) to 51.6° (49.5°) for the 4H-SiC and 6H-SiC regions, respectively. The contact angle of the Si-face recovered over time during room temperature oxidation in air; in contrast, that of the C-face did not recover to the initial value. This study shows that the contact angle is very sensitive to SiC surface polarity, specific surface conditions, and process time. Contact angle measurements are expected to be a rapid way of determining the surface polarity and wettability of SiC crystals.

  • In this study, finite element analysis of particle-surface collision using 2-dimensional elements was performed to observe the effects of abrasive size and impact angle. The result of the simulation on the change in abrasive size revealed that larger abrasive particle induced larger contact stress due to force transfer through slurry fluid as the particle moved and pushed the fluid. This observation brought an important finding that the slurry fluid could make the workpiece surface soften and then change the mechanical properties of the surface layer such as elastic modulus and yield strength. As for the impact angle, it was found that the contact stress increased with the angle of impact and jumped up at a specific angle. Such result would be attributed to the complex effects of the impact velocity and angle.

  • A study of electrowetting using an Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and Z- Tetraol 2000 perfluoropolyether lubricant as hydrophobic layers on Si and $SiO_2$ wafer was performed. The $SiO_2$ layer used as insulating layer was thermally grown on the silicon wafer to a thickness of 220-230 nm. The results demonstrated that the contact angle decreased from $100^{\circ}$ to $80^{\circ}$ at 28 V applied potential on $SiO_2$ wafer coated with OTS and the contact angle appeared to be reversible. However, the contact angle on the $SiO_2$ wafer coated with Z- Tetraol 2000 was not observable at 28 V applied potential. Furthermore, the contact angle on the Si wafer coated with OTS or Z- Tetraol 2000 appeared to be irreversible due to the generation of electrolysis in the droplet. It is concluded that it is feasible to use SAM as a hydrophobic layer in electrowetting applications.

  • This paper aims to investigate the effect of silicone oils as processing agent affecting the loss and recovery of hydrophobicity. The recovery of hydrophobicity was evaluated by the measurement of the surface electrical resistivity and the contact angle on the SIR surface. Two kinds of silicone oils (1 and 2) having different molecular weight were selected under a consideration of hydrophobicity and processability. SIR specimens were exposed to corona discharges in air and the specimens were analyzed with contact angle and surface resistance measurements. It was observed that the contact angle and the surface resistivity of SIR increase gradually with testing time. The fast recovery of hydrophobicity of SIR, expressed by the increment of contact angle and surface resistivity, was showed in SIR2 containing silicone oil 2.

  • This study proposes a method for identifying correlations between tension and drop height for sessile droplets in a roll-to-roll processing system. The effect of tension and drop height on the contact angle of a sessile droplet is presented. Design of experiment (DOE) methodology and statistical analysis are used to define a correlation between the process parameters. The contact angle is decreased while increasing tension and drop height. The influence of the tension is less significant on the contact angle compared with the effect of the drop height. However, tension should be considered as a major parameter because it is not easy to fix with roll eccentricity and compensating speed of the driven roll. The results of this study show that the effect of tension on the contact angle of a sessile droplet is more important than drop height because the drop height is fixed when the process systems are determined.

  • To improve surface wettability, each sample was treated by atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system. Argon and oxygen gases were used for treatment gas to modify the $TiO_2$ surface by APP with RF power range from 50 to 200 W. Water contact angle was decreased from $20^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ with argon only. However, water contact angle was decreased from $20^{\circ}$ to < $1^{\circ}$ with mixture of argon and oxygen. Water contact angle with $O_2$ plasma was lower than water contact angle with Ar plasma at the same RF power. It seems to be increasing the polar force of $TiO_2$ surface. Also, analysis result of X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) shows the increase of intensity of O1s shoulder peak, resulting in increasing of surface wettability by APP. Moreover, each water contact angle increased according to increase past time. However, contact angle increase with plasma treatment was lower than without plasma treatment. Additionally, the efficiency of $TiO_2$ photocatalyst was improved by plasma surface-treatment through the degradation experiment of phenol

  • Superhydrophobic surface, with a water contact angle greater than $150^{\circ}$, has a self-cleaning effect termed 'Lotus effect'. This surface is created by the combination of rough surface and the low surface energy. We proposed square pillar and square shapes to control surface roughness. Microstructure arrays are fabricated by DRIE(Deep Reactive Ion Etching) process and followed by PPFC(Plasma Polymerized Fluorocarbon) deposition. On the experimental result, contact angle at square pillar arrays is well matched with Cassie's model and largest contact angle is $173.37^{\circ}$. But contact angle of square pore shape arrays is lower than Cassie's theoretical contact angle about $5{\sim}10%$. Nevertheless, square pore arrays have more rigidity than square pillar arrays.

  • Most previous studies on water repellent surfaces using lasers rely on the use of pico- or femtosecond lasers. However, in industrial application, these methods have the disadvantages of high cost and low efficiency. In this study, we implement a hydrophobic surface using a high-power general-purpose diode laser. We have fabricated the microsurface using laser groove processing technology, and we present the correlation of wettability characteristics with space and width. The metal material is stainless steel (SUS 304), and the groove height during laser processing is set to $30{\mu}m$ to evaluate the wettability based on the gap and width of various grooves. Results show that the contact angle of the groove-shaped surface is increased by $40^{\circ}$ or more as compared with the surface without patterning, and the contact angle in the parallel direction is greater than that in the perpendicular direction. Results from contact angle hysteresis measurement experiments show that the groove width has a greater influence on the contact angle history than does the gap between grooves. In addition, the coating reveals that the contact angle can be increased using a chemical method and that the laser grooving process can further improve the wetting properties of the surface.
