  • The venus clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, is an aquaculture shellfish mainly distributed in an intertidal zone of East Asia including Korea, China and Japan. The morphological variation of this species is great. In fact, two of the most popular markers used in molecular evolution, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA), have quite different properties, which could translate into different consequences of mutation, drift, migration and selection on patterns of geographical variation and molecular divergence. • An earthworm survey of Busan metropolitan area unearthed a dozen taxa in four families (including Enchytraeidae). Members of mostly common, cosmopolitan earthworm species-complexes were: Drawida cf. koreana Kobayashi, 1938, Amynthas cf. corticis (Kinberg, 1867), Aporrectodea trapezoides (Dug$\grave{e}$s, 1828) and Eisenia fetida (Savigny, 1826). Also found were Amynthas hupeiensis (Michaelsen, 1895), A. masatakae (Beddard, 1892) and Metaphire ryunome Blakemore, 2012 - the latter a new Korean record. New taxa are: moniligastrid Drawida songae yeongdo subsp. n.; megascolecid Amynthas carnosus roki subsp. n. which is compared to nominal taxon A. carnosus (Goto and Hatai, 1899) from Japan, to A. carnosus monstriferus (Kobayashi, 1936) stat. n. from Korea and to A. lichuanensis Wang and Qiu, 2005 stat. n. from China; plus lumbricid Eisenia japonica vaga subsp. n. deemed an objectively-based molecular taxon on its unique DNA COI gene barcode. Restoration of Eisenia xanthurus (Templeton, 1836) for E. andrei is mooted (in Appendix).

  • In this study, we identified three monogonont rotifers from South Korea: Kellicottia bostoniensis (Rousselet, 1908), Trichocerca tenuior (Gosse, 1886), and Lepadella triptera (Ehrenberg, 1830). The distribution records of K. bostoniensis were mainly located in the Nearctic, Neotropic and Western Palearctic regions. After Japan, this is the second record of it in Asia. Trichocerca tenuior and Lepadella triptera have already been recorded in Korea, but the data of two species were insufficient in previous study. Here, we describe the morphological characteristics of the three species and the trophi structures of K. bostoniensis and T. tenuior. This study is the first to characterize the trophi structure of K. bostoniensis, observed using a scanning electron microscope. In addition, we have determined the partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and 18S rRNA gene sequences of T. tenuior and L. triptera for their DNA barcodes.

  • Ichneumonidae are well-known parasitoids that attack the larvae or pupae of other insects. This study analyzed whether the abdominal DNA of two ichneumonid wasps, Pimpla disparis and Theronia atalantae gestator, showed the signature of the host species, Ivela auripes. Observations confirmed that these two ichneumonids were the representative parasitoid species growing in the larvae of I. auripes. In addition, sequence analysis showed that the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene of the host was amplified completely from the DNA extracted from the gut tissues of the ichneumonids. Even after 96 h of adulthood, the host's DNA traces did not disappear and were amplified in many individuals. These results suggest a constructive first step for establishing of a host information bank for ichneumonids in the future.

  • Four monogonont rotifers, Filinia hofmanni Koste, 1980, Lecane pusilla Harring, 1914, Mikrocodides chlaena (Gosse, 1886), and Proales fallaciosa Wulfert, 1937, were newly recorded in Korea. The genera Mikrocodides Bergendal, 1892 and Proales Gosse, 1886 were recorded for the first time in Korea. Mikrocodides chlaena and Proales fallaciosa were found from soil samples and are both soft-bodied species. Filinia hofmanni has previously been recorded mainly in Europe, and this is its first record in Asia. Lecane pusilla is the 24th lecanid rotifer recorded in Korea, and its morphological characteristics are consistent with previous research of L. pusilla. We have provided the morphological diagnoses of the four Korean specimens in this study, along with the partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) gene of three species.

  • The genus and species, Diekeana insignis(Gorham), is reported for the first time in Korea. Male adults were collected from Geoje Island and Changwon-si, located in the southern part of South Korea. The species of D. insignis(Gorham) is characterized by the following morphological characteristics: body length about 9.4mm; pronotum with transverse black marking in the middle part; each elytron with seven large black markings; penis long, slightly bent at apical part, truncate at apex; parameres narrow and as long as penis guide; penis guide narrow and pointed at apex. We herein provide habitus photographs, illustrations of morphological characters, male genitalia, and a detailed diagnosis. A partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene was obtained and provided mtDNA information for this species.

  • We report a limacodid moth, Hampsonella takemurai (Inoue) for the first time in Korea based on four males from the southwestern islands of Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do. The genus Hampsonella Dyar was designated with the type species Parasa dentata Hampson and comprises six species, H. acatharta (Hampson, 1897), H. albidula Wu and Fang, 2009, H arizana (Wileman, 1916), H. dentata (Hampson, 1893), H. membra Solovyev and Witt, 2009, and H. takemurai (Inoue, 1986). Hampsonella takemurai can be diagnosed by the bipectinate male antennae, the blackish forewing with a large, dark blackish postmedial marking, and the blackish hindwing. The male genitalia can be diagnosed by the short triangular uncus, the long digitate gnathos, and the simple membranous valva. We provided the diagnosis and photographs of adult and male genitalia and COI gene sequence.
