  • This research was performed to figure out the optimal mixing ratio of food- to livestock wastewater for the best degradation of organic matter in the anaerobic digestion. The presence of various microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, was also investigated in both wastewater in this process. Enteric bacteria were only found in livestock wastewater, whereas pathogenic bacteria like S. aureus were detected in both wastewater. The optimal mixing ratio of food- to livestock wastewater for the best mineralization was found to fifty to fifty, with reduction ratios of $BOD_5$, CODcr SS as 23.2%, 24.7%, 19.7%, respectively. Hygiene of the digested sludge was also analyzed by counting the number of total colonies and various pathogens. Enterobacteriaceae including E. coli were barely detected in 10 days after reaction. Meanwhile, S. aureus was gradually reduced during reaction, even showing 1,000~5,000 CFU/mL in final days.

  • This study was performed to investigate the distribution and decomposition characteristics of organic matter in stream water and sewage effluent located in Gwangju. Average of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to total organic carbon (TOC) ratio was approximately 73.9% in the Youngsan river system. The concentration of refractory dossolved carbon (RDOC) was 3.7 mg/L corresponding to 80.9% of the DOC. The ratio of recalcitrant organic carbon was relatively higher than that of biodegradable organic carbon in stream. Oxidation efficiencies in the stream were 45.0% for BOD, 63.0% for $COD_{Mn}$ and 106.5% for CODcr. In case of sewage effluent was 33.6%, 65.7% and 136.1% respectively. Mean decomposition rate ($K_d$) of Youngsan river mainstream, its tributary sites and sewage effluent were about $0.042\;day^{-1}$, $0.043\;day^{-1}$ and $0.028\;day^{-1}$, respectively and the difference was not significant between the mainstream and its tributary sites (t-test, p>0.05). $K_d$ of the sewage effluent was lower than that of stream water.

  • To resolve shortcomings of high-rate anaerobic processes, such as high upward flow velocity, this study sought to improve the structure of the high-rate anaerobic reactor and evaluate its performance. The improved reactor was manufactured by adjusting the diameter and dividing the reactor into three parts. The evaluation of the structurally improved reactor revealed that the reactor could stabilize a single circuit, and prevent the accumulation of solid matter and leakage of microbes, thereby stabilize the microbes. In the process of anaerobic digestion, an increase in pH and alkalinity within the reactor was presumably attributed to bicarbonate created in the process of organic matter decomposition and due to the re-dissolution of some biogas. To maintain a high rate of organic matter removal, the reactor should be operated with more than 9 hrs of HRT and an organic matter load of under $10.kgTCODcr/m^3{\cdot}d$. The methane gas generated in the anaerobic digestion process showed a high content of 65~83 % at the organic matter load of over $7.7kgTCODcr/m^3{\cdot}d$. per removal of CODcr. The methane quantity was generated at $0.10{\sim}0.23m^3CH_4/kgCOD_{rem}$, showing that it was smaller than the theoretical methane generation amount (0.35) in the STP state. In the latter part of high-rate anaerobic process, an advanced treatment process was required to remove nitrogen.

  • Three sets of parallel MBRs (reactor No.1, reactor No.2, reactor No.3) maintaining an MLSS of 4,000 mg/L, 6,000 mg/L and 8,000 mg/L, respectively, were operated to investigate the effect of various HRTs and DO concentration of MBRs on the removal efficiency of organic matters and nitrogen. The HRTs were operated on 4 hr, 6 hr, 8 hr. DO concentrations were ranged 1.5~2.0 mg/L and 0.5~1.0 mg/L respectively on each HRT conditions. MBR was divided into an aerated part and non-aerated part by baffle placed under the water. DO concentrations were controlled by altering the position of baffle. In terms of TSS and CODCr, all systems had a similar level of the removal under varied HRTs and MLSS. TSS removal efficiency was more than 99% and CODCr removal was ranged 94~97% under all conditions. Under the same condition on the HRT and MLSS concentrations, DO concentrations did not affect the organic removal efficiency. On the nitrification efficiency, with high DO concentration, as HRT or MLSS increased, the slight increment of nitrification efficiency was observed. However, under the low DO concentration, increase of MLSS and HRT resulted in larger increase of the nitrification efficiency. At the same HRT and MLSS, the nitrification efficiency increased greatly with up to 16% as DO increased. When the HRT increased from 4hr to 8hr, the denitrification efficiency slightly increased under most of conditions. However, the increase of MLSS resulted in about 19~39% denitrification efficiency increment. MLSS concentrations showed great effect on the denitrification. The increase of the DO concentration at the same HRT and MLSS resulted in decrease of denitrification efficiency with up to 27%. In all systems, the denitrification efficiency had more influence on the TN removal efficiency than nitrification efficiency. So, MLSS concentration has greater effect on the TN removal than HRT and DO. The TN removal efficiency increased as MLSS increased with up to 37%. As a result, the highest TN removal efficiency was observed 79.0% at the condition showed the highest denitrification efficiency that DO of 0.5~1.0 mg/L, an HRT of 8 hr, and 8,000 mg/L of MLSS concentration were maintained.

  • Landfilling is one of the most widely used methods for the final disposal of solid wastes. Landfilled wastes are degraded by residing microorganisms and the microbial degradation is affected by many factors such as moisture, oxygen, pH, alkalinity, sulphate, nutrient, temperature, and so on. Especially among these factor, oxygen and moisture within aerobic landfill play a major role in microbial degradation. In this study, 1) the effects of oxygen on the velocity of waste degradation and 2) the effect of moisture on the degradation of municipal solids waste (MSW) in aerobic condition were investigated. It was found that the BOD and CODcr concentration from the leachate of aerobic lysimeters dropped faster by 80 days after the start of the test compared to those from the anaerobic lysimeters. To see the effect of moisture, four aerobic lysimeters filled with MSW and four different levels of moisture (20, 30, 40, and 50%) were installed. From this test, higher moisture in MSW produced higher $CO_2$ concentration, meaning moisture was effective for the microbial degradation. thus, we concluded that higher moisture level in the aerobic landfill might help early-stabilization microbial degradation.

  • Food wastewater derived from the three-stage methane fermentation system developed in this lab contained high concentration organic substances. The organic wastewater should be treated through advanced wastewater treatment system to satisfy the "Permissible Pollutant Discharge Standard of Korea". In order to treat the organic wastewater efficiently, several optimum operation conditions of a modified $UV/TiO_{2}$ photocatalytic system have been investigated. In the first process, wastewater was pre-treated with $FeCl_{3}$. The optimum pH and coagulant concentration were 4.0 and 2000mg/L, respectively. Through this process, 52.6% of CODcr was removed. The second process was $UV-TiO_{2}$ photocatalytic reaction. The optimum operation conditions for the system were as follows: UV lamp wavelength, 254 nm; wastewater temperature, $40^{\circ}C$; pH 8.0; and air flow rate, 40L/min, respectively. Through the above two combined processes, 69.7% of T-N and 70.9% of CODcr contained in the wastewater were removed.

  • In this study, the effect of physico-chemical variables on sludge conditioning was determined to enhance dewaterability of effluent produced from the thermophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste. The gas production rate and methane content during the anaerobic digestion of food waste were $1.1m^3/kg$ VS and 63%, respectively, and the biodegradability of volatile solids was 87.5%. The concentrations of CODcr, TKN and TP of effluent from digestor were 18,500mg/L, 2,800mg/L, and 582mg/L, respectively. At the jar test to screen the flocculant for the dewatering of effluent from digestor, $FeCl_3$ and strong cationic polymer were effective on making flocs in the effluent. The condition of flocculation of effluent were 500mg/L of $FeCl_3$ and 50-100 mg/L of strong cationic polymer, respectively. As the result of measuring of dewaterability potential of effluent to determine the mixing ratio between $FeCl_3$ and polymer by capillary suction time(SCT), optimum condition was 500mg/L of $FeCl_3$ and 80mg/L of strong cationic polymer.

  • In this study, to estimate the biodegradability of sewage discharged intermittently, field scale sampling and analysis was conducted and the results were obtained as follows. According to results of the biodegradability of sewage discharged intermittently, average concentration of TCODcr is 325.5mg/L and ratio of TCOD fraction resulted 100%. Also, average concentration of SCODcr resulted 135.9mg/L and ratio of TCOD fraction resulted 41.8%. Average concentration of Ss showed 74.1mg/L and ratio of TCOD fraction resulted 22.8%. Average concentration of $S_I$ was analyzed to be 61.8mg/L and ratio of TCOD fraction was calculated to 19.0%. Xs which is particulate matter was analyzed to show 27.8mg/L and ratio of TCOD fraction also showed 8.5%. Average concentration of $X_H$ is 103.4mg/L and ratio of TCOD fraction resulted 31.8%. Inert particulate matter showed that average concentration of $X_I$ is 58.5mg/L and ratio of TCOD fraction resulted 18.0%. Accordingly, dissolved biodegradable organic matter showed the ratio of 41.8%, and readily biodegradable matter among this showed 22.8%. Thus intermittent inflow is expected to have less effect with regards equalization by organic loading rate of influent.

  • The generation amounts of manure and urine were total 4.57kg/head/d of 1.49kg manure/head/d and 3.08kg urine/head/d with consideration of 3 seasons and live weight. The finalized mean unit load generation of filth were estimated at BOD 199.5g/head/d, CODCr 413.5g/head/d, T-N 27.8g/head/d, T-P 5.3g/head/d with consideration of seasons and the type of stalls. The unit load generation of manure and urine from korean cow were analyzed as 10.9kg/head/day and 3.3kg/head/day, respectively. The unit load generation of manure from milch cow was analyzed to be 24.6L/head/day which was similar to the report of MOE(2006). The urine generation, 10.5L/head/day, was higher than the results from MOA(2000) and NIAR(2000), but was lower than the results from MOE(2006), NIER(1986) and KIST(1990). The unit load generation from egg layers estimated by discharged amount and concentration analysis increases in due to the difference of planting head numbers, feed stuffs and manure disposal. In case of deer unit load generation by herbivora were calculated to be higher than data from existing references because of the gap between weight per livestock and the generation amounts of manure and urine.
