  • Most jet spray and atomization simulations are done with the Eulerian method which has inherent disadvantage in representing jet breakups and droplets. Full Lagrangian particles method called Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics(SPH) is used in this work. We develop the SPH code and perform validations that confirm the suitability of our SPH method for simulating liquid jet atomization problem. Then, we conduct the simulation of liquid-liquid swirl coaxial injector for comparison against the experimental data.

  • The aim of this work is to investigate the spray and combustion characteristics of dimethyl-ether (DME) at various injection conditions. The spray characteristics such as spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were experimentally studied from the spray images which obtained from the spray visualization system. Combustion and emissions characteristics were numerically investigated by using KIVA-3V code coupled with Chemkin chemistry solver. From these results, it revealed that DME spray had a shorter spray tip penetration and wider spray cone angle than that of diesel spray due to the low density, low surface tension, and fast evaporation characteristics. At the constant heating value condition, DME fuel showed higher peak combustion pressure and earlier ignition timing, because of high cetane number and superior evaporation characteristics. In addition, the combustion of DME exhausted more $NO_x$ emission and lower HC emission due to the active combustion reaction in the combustion chamber. The result shows that DME had a little soot emission due to its molecular structure characteristics with no direct connection between carbons.

  • Confinement is known to have important influence on ductility of high-strength concrete (HSC) members and it may therefore be anticipated that this parameter would also affect notably the moment redistribution in these members. The correctness of this "common-sense knowledge" is examined in the present study. A numerical test is performed on two-span continuous reinforced HSC beams with and without confinement using an experimentally validated nonlinear model. The results show that the effect of confinement on moment redistribution is totally different from that on flexural ductility. The moment redistribution at ultimate limit state is found to be almost independent of the confinement, provided that both the negative and positive plastic hinges have formed at failure. The numerical findings are consistent with tests performed on prototype HSC beams. Several design codes are evaluated. It is demonstrated that the code equations by Eurocode 2 (EC2), British Standards Institution (BSI) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) can well reflect the effect of confinement on moment redistribution in reinforced HSC beams but the American Concrete Institute (ACI) code cannot.

  • In this study, simulations were done of a 661.6 keV line from a point source of $^{137}Cs$ housed in a lead shield. When increasing the scattering angle from 60 to 120 degrees with a 6061 aluminum alloy target placed at angles of 30 and 45 degrees to the incident beam, the spectra showed that the single scattering component increases and that the multiple scattering component decreases. The investigation of the single and multiple scattering components was carried out using a MCNP5 simulation code. The component of the single Compton scattering photons is proportional to the target electron density at the point where the scattering occurs. The single scattering peak increases according to the thickness of the target and saturates at a certain thickness. The signal-to-noise ratio was found to decrease according to the target thickness. The simulation was experimentally validated by measurements. These results will be used to determine the best conditions under which this method can be applied to testing electron densities or to assess the thickness of samples to locate defects in them.

  • We developed a base station modulator ASIC for CDMA digital cellular system. In CDMA digital cellular system, the modulation is performed by convolutional encoding and QPSK with spread spectrum. The function blocks of base station modulator are CRC, convolutional encoder, interleaver pseudo-moise scrambler, power control bit puncturing, walsh cover, QPSK, gain controller, combiner and multiplexer. Each function block was designed by the logic synthesis of VHDL codes. The VHDL code was described at register transfer level and the size of code is about 8,000 lines. The circuit simulation and logic simulation were performed by COMPASS tools. The chip (ES-C2212B CMB) contains 25,205 gates and 3 Kbit SRAM, and its chip size is 5.25 mm * 5,45 mm in 0.8 mm CMOS cell-based design technology. It is packaged in 68 pin PLCC and the power dissipation at 10MHz is 300 mW at 5V. The ASIC has been fully tested and successfully working on the CDMA base station system.

  • The aims of this study are to investigate the Korean population stereotype for control-display linkage of four-burner gas-range, and to compare the results of this study with those of the existing studies. The investigation used a paper-pencil test using questionnaire with a sign code system for eliminating suggestive effect of sequential code. Two hundreds and eighty subjects participated in the investigation, among whom 254 subjects effectively responded to question for the gas-range stereotype. The results showed that type III(refer to Table 2) was chosen more frequently than type II, IV and V(p<0.01). The gender is not significant on responding rate for the type of control-burner linkage(p>0.92), while the age and occupation have significant effect on the rate(p<0.01). Based on this study, it appears that type III represents the population stereotype of control-burner arrangement for Korean. The stereotype was the same as that of Chinese, but different from that of American(type II or IV). The findings of this study would be helpful as basic data for ergonomically designing gas-range or similar products.

  • Park Tae-hwan, the Korean Olympic gold medal swimmer, was suspended for eighteen months by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) in September 2014. Park completed his suspension in March 2016, but the Korea Olympic Committee (KOC), relying on its Article 5.6, then prohibited him from joining the national team for an additional three years for the same doping violation. The KOC's penalty exceeded that provided by the World Anti-Doping Code, which governs the Olympics and most international sports federations, and contravened well-established precedent from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The KOC, along with the Korea Swimming Federation, maintained the suspension until decisions by the Seoul Eastern District Court and CAS forced them to retract the penalty. We describe the sports regulations and arbitration decisions governing the Park case, how each side used the law to support their positions, the flaws in the KOC's legal analysis, and the case's resolutions by the Korean court and CAS. Finally, because this legal conflict has damaged the KOC's reputation, created uncertainty over the committee's doping penalties, and undercut the authority of the World Anti-Doping Code and the CAS in Korea, we recommend institutional changes in Korea's sports jurisprudence.

  • In order to explore the cosmic ray acceleration at the cosmological shocks, we have performed numerical simulations of one-dimensional, plane-parallel, cosmic ray (CR) modified shocks with the newly developed CRASH (Cosmic Ray Amr SHock) numerical code. Based on the hypothesis that strong Alfven waves are self-generated by streaming CRs, the Bohm diffusion model for CRs is adopted. The code includes a plasma-physics-based 'injection' model that transfers a small proportion of the thermal proton flux through the shock into low energy CRs for acceleration there. We found that, for strong accretion shocks with Mach numbers greater than 10, CRs can absorb most of shock kinetic energy and the accretion shock speed is reduced up to $20\%$, compared to pure gas dynamic shocks. Although the amount of kinetic energy passed through accretion shocks is small, since they propagate into the low density intergalactic medium, they might possibly provide acceleration sites for ultra-high energy cosmic rays of $E\ll10^{18}eV$. For internal/merger shocks with Mach numbers less than 3, however, the energy transfer to CRs is only about $10-20\%$ and so nonlinear feedback due to the CR pressure is insignificant. Considering that intracluster medium (ICM) can be shocked repeatedly, however, the CRs generated by these weak shocks could be sufficient to explain the observed non-thermal signatures from clusters of galaxies.

  • In this paper, a wideband clock generator using novel Automatic frequency calibration(AFC) scheme is proposed. Wideband clock generator using AFC has the advantage of small VCO gain and wide frequency band. The conventional AFC compares whether the feedback frequency is faster or slower then the reference frequency. However, the proposed AFC can detect frequency difference between reference frequency with feedback frequency. So it can be reduced an operation time than conventional methods AFC. Conventional AFC goes to the initial code if the frequency step changed. This AFC, on the other hand, can a prior state code so it can approach a fast operation. In simulation results, the proposed clock generator is designed for DisplayPort using the CMOS ring-VCO. The VCO tuning range is 350MHz, and a VCO frequency is 270MHz. The lock time of clock generator is less then 3us at input reference frequency, 67.5MHz. The phase noise is -109dBC/Hz at 1MHz offset from the center frequency. and power consumption is 10.1mW at 1.8V supply and layout area is $0.384mm^2$.

  • As an energetic focused-ion beam(FIB) is irradiated on an inorganic amorphous thin film a majority of ions without a reflection at surface, is randomly collided with constituent atoms in thin film. but their distribution exhibits generally a systematic form of distribution. In our previous paper we reported the concentration distribution and the transmission per unit depth of Ga$^{+}$ ions penetrated int a-Se$_{75}$ /Ge$_{25}$ thin film using the LSS-based calculation. In this paper these simulated results are compared with those obtained by a conventional profile code(ISC) and a practical SIMS profile. Then the results of LSS-based calculation have only a small difference with those of code and SIMS Especially. in the case of Ga$^{+}$-FIB with an accelerating energy of 15keV. the depth of the maximum ion concentration is coincident with each other in an error range of $\pm$5$\AA$.EX>.
