In order to investigate the treatment efficiency of pollutants in free water surface constructed wetlands (FWS CWs) with lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) cultivation pond, the experiment was consisted of two sites (site I and II) in Lake Juam, Korea. The sites were configured a lotus cultivation pond (with fertilizer application) - a dropwort bed - a reed bed for site I, and a lotus cultivation pond (without fertilizer application) - a dropwort bed - a reed bed for site II. Removal rate of COD in site I and II were 13.3% and 26.0%, respectively. Removal rate of total nitrogen (TN) was 29.7% for site I, and 36.3% for site II. Removal rate of total phosphorus (TP) in site I and II were 36.0% and 36.5%, respectively. COD, TN and TP in effluent from site I (with fertilizer) was higher than that in site II (without fertilizer), showing that COD, TN and TP in effluent were strongly influenced by fertilizer addition. Therefore, in order to satisfy established water-quality standards, the amount of fertilizer used in lotus cultivation showed be evaluated.
This study was carry out to evaluate of water purification in oxidation pond with filamentous algae mat. It is the water treatment process in the small rural streams to remove the organic materials and nutrients. We used the filamentous algae mat (FAM) which selectively predominate the filamentous algae to prevent the additional contamination by algae outflow, and we conducted a experiment on the water treatment process using the aquatic plants such as Eichhornia crassipes. The removal efficiencies (%) of water quality parameters were SS 80.9%, COD 74.6%, TN 76.8%, TP 84.4%, DTN 93.8% and DTP 98.3%, respectively. Temperature, a effect factor, was $21.8{\pm}5.9^{\circ}C$ during the operating period, according to temperature had no effect on the removal efficiencies of pollutants. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) strongly correlated with removal efficiencies (%) of SS and TP having r=0.414 (p<0.005), r=0.446 (p<0.005), respectively, and when HRT was 5day had highly removal efficiency (%) in SS and TP. TN and TP removal efficiency increased with ratio decreasing in both COD/TN and COD/TP of Influent.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the current status, including the maintenance problems and removal efficiency, of small sewage treatment facilities in Chung-nam province(Asan, Buyeo, and Gongju city). Our results showed that inflow water quality of Asan city was 19.1 mg/L of BOD, 29.0 mg/L of COD, 13.4 mg/L of T-N and 1.5 mg/L of T-P, respectively, which was much higher than any other site. Among the factors known to be an important index of water quality, the SS and BOD removal efficiency was about 70% and 50% respectively. However, the nitrogen removal efficiency was less than 10%. The total removal efficiency of pollutant was 71.1% of SS, 52.6% of BOD, 46.2% of COD, 9.2% of T-P and 4.6% of T-N respectively. Therefore nitrogen removal processes are required to prevent serious eutrophication of small river. Removal efficiency for BOD and SS of high-efficient sewage treatment facilities (STFs) and contact oxidation process was much higher than another process. Performance of these sewage treatment facilities(STFs) is not optimal due to ineffective planning for the inflow water quality. To improve these facilities, it is proposed that a technical expert analysis of water quality at these facilities is periodically required.

Since anaerobic/anoxic/oxic process, which is a typical mainstream biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal process, utilizes influent organic matter as an external carbon source for phosphorus release in anaerobic or anoxic stage, influent COD/T-P ratio gives a strong influence on performance of phosphorus removal process. In this study, a bench scale experiment was carried out for SBR process to investigate nitrogen and phosphorus removal at various influent COD/T-P ratio and nitrate loadings of 23~73 and 1.6~14.3g $NO_3{^-}-N/kg$ MLSS, respectively. The phosphorus release and excess uptake in anoxic condition were very active at influent COD/T-P ratios of 44 and 73. However, its release and uptake was not obviously observed at COD/T-P ratio of 23. Consequently, phosphorus removal efficiency was decreased. In addition, the phosphorus release and uptake rate in anoxic condition increased as the nitrate loading decreased. Specific denitrification rate had significantly high correlation with organic materials and nitrate loadings of the anoxic phase too. The rate of phosphorus release and uptake in the anoxic condition were $0.08{\sim}0.94kg\;S-P/kg\;MLSS{\cdot}d$ and $0.012{\sim}0.1kg\;S-P/kg\;MLSS{\cdot}d$, respectively.
This study used biofilm process, which needs simple operation, maintenance and smaller facility area than conventional activated sludge process with the small plant operation, in the treatment of increasing sewage with the rapid industrial growth. The reactor used in this study consists of one anaerobic and one aerobic chamber filled with waste ceramic and waste vinyl as media and the treated sewage was from restaurant source. The experiment was scaled up from lab. to pilot scale and lasted for about 100 days. We focused on the removal efficiency of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus with constant HRT and continuous aeration. The removal efficiency of $BOD_5$ and SS were 94.33% and 87.77% respectively, which was a satisfaction level. However the removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ was 81.46% somewhat below the desired level of 90%, and that of T-N and T-P showed 71.92% and 21.10% respectively, that was below the expected value. The removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ and T-N in the pilot scale was about 10% low compared with the lab.-scale.
This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of nutrient removal by Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) system, which could achieve high removal efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus and make it possible convenient management and operation. In this study, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen, and phosphorus in SBR system were examined by variation of anoxic-oxic phase repetition in order to optimize an operational method. The 1~4 times of anoxic-oxic phases (Run 1~4) were repeated during 1 cycle operation period. As the repetition frequency increased, it was more difficult to maintain DO condition enough for denitrification. The SBR system showed high COD removal efficiency more than 91% regardless of operational condition. About 68% of nitrogen removal rate was obtained in conditions of 2 or 3 times repetition of anoxic phases, in which NOx-N among discharged total nitrogen account for more than 99%. Approximately 40% of phosphorus was eliminated in the conditions of 1~3 times of anoxic phase repetition.

For treating tannery wastewater containing high sulfate and heavy metals, test was performed to assess their performance, competition between SRB (sulfate reducing bacteria) and MPB (methane producing bacteria), and the activity of MPB according to change of chromium concentrations. COD removal efficiency was above 70% at VLR (volumetric loading rate) of 2.0 gCOD/I.day and HRT (hydraulic retention time) of 18hrs at $35^{\circ}C$. In the competition between SRB and MPB, about 15% of the removed COD was utilized by SRB in the begining, but it became 43% at the end. It indicated that MPB was strongly suppressed by the occurrence of significant sulfate reduction since a large electron flow was uptaken by SRB. For the entire experiment, removal efficiencies of chromium concentration were more than 90%. Despite high removal efficiencies of chromium concentration, performance of reactor did not change significantly during the experimental periods. Expecially, chromium (III) is tannery wastewater is less toxic than chromium (VI).

The objectives of this study were to isolate and culture methanotrophs and to apply them for biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorous. Methanotrophs (dominant species: Methylomonas methanica) were isolated from a landfill cover soil, cultured in a NMS medium, and analyzed to reveal their characteristics of growth and nutrient removal. The methanotrophs themselves can produce substantial amount of organic substances(as COD) including methanol, formaldehyde, and formate, as carbon sources required for denitrification. For instance, the production rate for methanol was $8\;mg/L{\cdot}hr$. Moreover, the analysis of nitrogen and phosphorous in the sludge suggested that the methanotrophs assimilate nitrogen and phosphorous as growth substances.

In the present work, the aerobic particle's characteristics were enhanced. A polymer was used to make aerobic granular sludge in short period of time. And operation parameters were calculated for organic matter removal in domestic wastewater using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The experiment for sewage (Influent concentration of 63~72 mg COD/L) by using mature aerobic granular sludge showed the organic matter removal rate k and oxygen utilization coefficient a', b' were $10.161d^{-1}$ and 0.87 mg $O_2/mg$$COD_r$, 0.11 mg $O_2/mg$ MLVSS d respectively. Therefore, it was more effective than K value $5{\sim}8d^{-1}$ of conventional activated sludge process. The sludge synthetic value and sludge auto-oxydation value were 0.45 mg VSS/mg $COD_r$ and 0.05 mg VSS/mg MLVSS d respectively. Consequently, mortality rates of microorganisms was lower than conventional activated sludge process.
Washed wastewater generated from the intermittent cleaning process of the three tunnel sites located in the Seoul area showed high concentrations of SS, $COD_{Cr}$, T-N, $NH_3-N$, $NO_3-N$, Zn, Cu, Cr(+6), Mn, Mg, Phenol, $CN^-$ and E-Coli based on the water quality analysis. These characteristics of the deteriorative wastewater depend on the sampling method, cleaning frequency, released amount of washing water, inner material of tunnel wall, traffic volume, and type of drainage systems. Gravitational separation experiment of SS with collected tunnel wastewater showed considerable removal of pollutants such as 80% of $COD_{Cr}$, 30% of T-N and 90% of T-P simultaneously. GAC isotherm test was conducted to remove dissolved portion of the pollutants, and resulted in high removal efficiencies above 80% of $COD_{Cr}$, T-N, Zn, Cu, Mn, Phenol, CN in the experimental condition of GAC dosage of $50g/1/{\ell}$.
