  • Amount of spatter, welding conditions and welding costs were investigated for MAG welding. $CO_2$, Ar+18%;$CO_2$ and Ar+8%$O_2$ were used for shielding gases. As results, arc characteristics and appropriate range for welding were obtained. Amount of spatter in Ar+18%$CO_2$ gas welding was 20% of that of $CO_2$ welding, and Ar+8%$O_2$ was 10% of that of $CO_2$ welding. Therefore by using Ar+18%$CO_2$and Ar+8%$O_2$ gases, welding costs could be reduced compared with $CO_2$ welding due to avoiding spatter.

  • Laser-gas metal arc hybrid welding has been considered as an alternative process of gas metal arc welding for offshore pipe laying. Fiber delivered high power lasers which enable deep penetration welding were recently developed but high power welding characteristics were not fully understood yet. In this study, the influence of shielding gas composition on welding phenomena in high power laser welding was investigated. Bead shapes, melt ejection and dropping were observed after autogenous laser welding with 100% Ar, Ar-20% $CO_2$, Ar-50% $CO_2$, and 100% $CO_2$ shielding gas. Process parameter window was widest with Ar-50% $CO_2$ shielding gas and the penetration was deepest with 100% $CO_2$ shielding gas. The melt dropping was not observed when Ar-50% $CO_2$ or 100% $CO_2$ shielding gas was supplied.

  • The object of this study is to investigate the effect of compounded welding through the AE (Acoustic Emission) characteristics on static tensile test. This study was carried out a SM 490A, high tension steel using the low hydrogen type E4316 of electronic shield metal arc welding and compound wire of $CO_2$gas arc welding. $CO_2$welding, weak in the intensity of HAZ (Heat Affected Zone), can be improved by being combined with coated arc welding, Coated arc welding, weak in the intensity of the bead, can be improved by being combined with $CO_2$welding. Especially, electronic coated arc welding and $CO_2$welding complement the mechanical intensity of HAZ and the bead with each other. So, compounded welding increases the intensity in the special parts and enhances the quality of goods.

  • Present automobile robot welding use $CO_2$ inert gas as a shielding fluid. The inert gas is spreading out and consumable. This present welding mechanism interfered with the welding nozzle. After welding several places have welding defects. Therefore, to reduce the $CO_2$ inert gas and to avoid interference with the material and to increase production modified nozzle which composed of cap and tip are needed. Suggested modified nozzle assembly composed of two stages i.e. $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ stage. At the second stage it has 8 holes which is 3mm of diameter around the circumference. On the base of experimental results the inert $CO_2$ gas discharge reduced to 47% and welding defects decreased also. Modified two stage welding cap can be applied to the present robot welding machine and save the prime cost.

  • $CO_2$ welding is used widely in the field. On the other hand, welding defects occur when welders cannot adjust the current and voltage needed for welding and have to stop working to adjust the current and voltage, causing sudden cooling down of the welding structure inside a vehicle or tank where the control panel is invisible or when work site is far. This study used three types of existing $CO_2$ welders. This also applied SS400 rolled steel for welding structural purposes for remote control torch welding, perform a welding test through v-groove butt welding with a remote control torch and existing $CO_2$ welding torch, conducted visual inspection on the appearance of a welded top bead. In addition, the appearance quality of the welding part was monitored mainly through penetrant testing and a bending test to evaluate the welding defect reduction and the effect on the performance and compatibility by replacing the existing welder.

  • The laser welding of the car body and components has been spread in the automotive industry. The Nd:YAG laser welding system could be used in 3D welding with robot. However, this system cannot efficiently reduce the welding cycle time according to various welding sequences because the robot's moving time is same that of the resistant spot welding system. But the remote welding system with high power $CO_2$ laser and scanner makes it possible welding cycle time much faster than the robot laser welding system. In the $CO_2$ laser remote welding system, laser beam can be rapidly transferred to a workpiece by moving mirrors of scanner system. So, it makes reducing the cycle time of welding process and shaping various welding patterns easily. Therefore, in this paper, the characteristic of weld strength according to patterns of weld bead on $CO_2$ laser welding was investigated. Also, the relationship between shape of weld bead and value of tensile load was studied. Finally, the optimum remote welding condition for car bumper was investigated.

  • The metal transfer in $CO_2$ welding shows the transition of transfer mode from short-circuiting to repelled transfer will the increase of welding current. While the short-circuiting mode in $CO_2$ welding has been studied very extensively relating with droplet formation and spatter generation, the repelled transfer has little been understood. In this study, high current $CO_2$ welding has been performed with bead-on-plate welds along with the waveform analyzer and high speed camera. The image of high speed camera was synchronized with its waveform so that the moment of spatter generation could be realized during drop detachment. As a results of this study, it was found that welding arc changes its location either once or three times and thus single or double pulse signals were developed in the voltage waveform. Whenever the arc moved its location, new arc was developed in a explosive way and thus it caused spatter generation. Specially severe spattering took place when the waveform showed a double-peak pattern. As a consequence of these results, new waveform control techniques could be suggested for suppressing the spatter generation in the high-current $CO_2$ welding.

  • $CO_2$ Welding which uses $CO_2$ instead of inert gas is most widely used in industrial sites. Welding rod for $CO_2$ Welding is roughly divided into solid wire and flux cored wire. $CO_2$ Welding has higher efficiency than any other welding methods, and also economic and speedy to handle, that's why is used frequently for welding general structures. As most of studies about $CO_2$ Welding are focused on metallurgical changes of successful joints, they developed theories about the change of configuration on weld parts. This study is especially focused on not only the change of configuration on weld parts, but also the change of the penetrating depth through changing the position of welding torch. For inspection, applied AWS A5.20 E70-1 among welding wires and fixed moving angles of torch, but controled the values of voltage and the position of welding. Also Automatic Feed Mechanism is used for exact movement of material, specimen is a piece of steel for general structures. By measuring and analyzing the configuration of sliced section and the values of welding leg length and welding throat after welding, the outcome about the changes turned out.

  • The influence of welding heat input variation(600-900J/cm) and heat-treatment condition after welding on tensile strength of butt welded joint in $175Kg/mm^2$ strength level Maraging steel(Co-free and Co-containing) sheets was investigated on the basis of hardness distribution, microstructure of weld metal and fracture surface. The obtained main results are as follows; 1. The strength of weldment (UTS, NTS), joint efficiency showed a little decreasing tendency with the increase in welding heat input, and the elongation showed a little increasing tendency with the increase in the width of weld metal. It was considered because of the plastic constraint of the high strength base metal. 2. The strength of weldment was better in the solution treatment and aging than the aging only after welding due to the disappearance of almost denverite in weld metal. 3. The hardness distribution in weldment after welding and heat-treatment was almost similar to both Co containing and Co free Maraging steel with change in welding heat input. 4. The fracture was occurred at weld metal, and the fracture surface showed a relatively shallow dimples in both Co containing and Co free Maraging steel.

  • The instability of the arc in the $CO_2$ arc welding affects the quality of the weld in the automotive industry. This paper evaluates the effects of the arc stability in $CO_2$ arc welding with respect to vertical welding positions. In this experiment, galva-annealed steel sheets(CA) were used as specimens, and these materials were welded by adopting new Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) process. For each sample, fillet joint welding trials were carried out using the same conditions. Each part of welding joints was welded with vertical-up, vertical-down position at $45^{\circ},\;90^{\circ}\;and\;135^{\circ}$ degrees. A high speed camera and a welding signal monitoring system were used for monitoring fluid-flow phenomena in weld pools and frequency measurements, respectively. Through this study, the welding position were found to be key factors mainly to influence the arc stability in $CO_2$ welding moreover and that the arc stability in the vertical-up welding position was observed to be more stable than the vertical-down welding position below $90^{\circ}$.
