  • The evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ (R-744) in a horizontal tube was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump. a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator (test section). The test section consists of a smooth. horizontal stainless steel tube of 7.75 mm inner diameter. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to $500\;kg/m^{2}s$, saturation temperature of $-5^{\circ}C\;to\;5^{\circ}C$. and heat flux of 10 to $40\;kW/m^2$. The test results showed the evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor qualify, heat flux and saturation temperature. The evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ is very lower than that of R-22. In comparison with test results and existing correlations. the best fit of the present experimental data is obtained with the correlation of Choi et al. But existing correlations failed to predict the evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$. Therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

  • This paper describes the possible way to improve the capacity, the efficiency and the pressure drop of $CO_2$ system. It is considered the use of an internal heat exchanger (IHX) to improve the performance of the $CO_2$ system. Experiment was performed by changing a tube shape, a tube number and a tube length of IHX to investigate the performance of IHX for $CO_2$ system. The focus of the present study is to obtain the concept on IHX optimal design. Experimental results show that design parameters are closely related with the capacity and the pressure drop of $CO_2$ system. In the transcritical $CO_2$ cycle, the system performance is very sensitive to the IHX design. System performance on operation condition and shape of IHX is also introduced.

  • A simple analytical method that allows direct monitoring of small amount of CO$_2$ in a CO$_2$ discharge tube which utilizes the optoacoustic detection technique is described. The dependence of the optoacoustic signal on the mole fraction of CO$_2$ was shown that the system responded linearly to the amount of CO$_2$ present in the miniature discharge cavity equipped with Cu electrodes. It was also found that fraction of dissociated CO$_2$ varied from 14 to 37% of the initial concentration which depended on the current and the pressure in the tube. This simple and easy detection method has proven to possess the practical advantages over the conventional systems for the study of CO$_2$ laser electrodes.

  • This study was the effect of CO tube insert for NOx and CO emission characteristics in a compact combustion chamber. In detail, NOx and CO emission characteristics with changing of distance due to inserting the CO tube between the burner and the main heat exchanger were investigated. For this study, the commercial program, FLUENT, and the GRI 2.11 detail reaction mechanism were used for the numerical study and a simple model heat exchanger was tested for the experimental study. As results, when the CO tube was inserted between the burner and the main heat exchanger, it was verified the simultaneous NOx and CO reduction method because of increasing the residence time and decreasing the flame temperature.

  • A performance analysis model has been developed for fin-tube type heat exchanger for $CO_2$ heat pump. The model uses the tube-by-tube method Because air-side thermal resistance has a great portion among total thermal resistances, it is important to understand air-side heat transfer characteristics. The air-side heat transfer correlation has been proposed from experiments using water. The developed model was confirmed by experimental results and can be used for the performance analysis of heat exchanger.

  • The theoretical analysis of performance characteristics in a $CO_2$ cycle with the heat exchanger type was carried out. The size and performance of the fin-tube and microchannel heat exchanger were compared with operating conditions. As a result, the performance of the fin-tube gascooler and evaporator were more sensitive to the variation of operating condition compared to that of the microchannel gascooler and evaporator. Beside, the sizes of microchannel gascooler and evaporator could be decreased by 73% and 76%, respectively, compared to those of the fin-tube type gascooler and evaporator with the similar capacity. The COP and reliability of the $CO_2$ system can be increased by using a microchannel heat exchanger.

The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and an evaporator (test section). The test results showed that the evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. The measured pressure drop during the evaporation process of $CO_2$ increases with increased mass flux, and decreased saturation temperature. The evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ is much lower than that of R 22. • A total loss of all heat sinks is considered a severe accident with a low probability of occurrence. Following a total loss of all heat sinks, the degasser/condenser relief valves (DCRV) become the sole means available for the depressurization of the primary heat transport system. If a nuclear power plant has a total loss of heat sinks accident, high-temperature steam and differential pressure between the primary heat transport system (PHTS) and the steam generator (SG) secondary side can cause a SG tube creep rupture. To protect the PHTS during a total loss of all heat sinks accident, a sufficient depressurization capability of the degasser/condenser relief valve and the SG tube integrity is very important. Therefore, an accurate estimation of the discharge through these valves is necessary to assess the impact of the PHTS overprotection and the SG tube integrity of the primary circuit. This paper describes the analysis of DCRV discharge capacity and the SG tube integrity under a total loss of all heat sink using the CATHENA code. It was found that the DCRV's discharge capacity is enough to protect the overpressure in the PHTS, and the SG tube integrity is maintained in a total loss of all heat accident.

  • Vortex tube is the device that can separate small particles from the compressed gas, as well as compressed gas into hot and cold flow. In this study, computational approach has been performed to analyze the characteristics of the vortex tube. Energy separation characteristics of the vortex tube has been tested for various geometric design parameters. For the given conditions, it is found that as the tube is lengthened, hot end temperature is reduced but cold end temperature does not influenced much. As the orifice diameter decreases, cold end temperature decreases. Also, as hot gas fraction increases, hot end temperature decreases. The results from this study can be used for the basic design parameter of the $CO_2$ reduction device.

  • The heat transfer and pressure drop of supercritical $CO_2$ cooled in a helically coiled tube was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in the refrigerant loop. The experimental apparatus of the refrigerant loop consist of receiver, a variable speed pump, a mass flowmeter, a pre-heater, a gas cooler(test section) and an isothermal tank. The test section is a helically coiled tube in tube counter flow heat exchanger with $CO_2$ flowed inside the inner tube and coolant( water) flowed along the outside annular passage, It was made of it copper tube with the inner diameter of 4.55[mm]. the outer diameter of 6.35 [mm] and length of 10000 [mm]. The refrigerant mass fluxes were $200^{\sim}600$ [kg/m2s] and the inlet pressure of gas cooler varied from 7.5 [MPa] to 10.0 [MPa]. The main results are summarized as follows : The heat transfer coefficient of supercritical $CO_2$ increases, as the cooling pressure of gas cooler decreases. And the heat transfer coefficient increases with the increase of the refrigerant mass flux. The pressure drop decreases in increase of the gas cooler pressure and increases with increase the refrigerant mass flux.
