  • In this work, the adsorption characteristics of the activated carbon treated with 30 wt. %HCl and 30 wt. % NaOH were investigated. The acid and base values were determined by Boehm's method and the surface area and porosity was measured by BET-method with $N_2$-adsorption. Also, the adsorption characteristics of the activated carbons treated with acid and base chemical solutions were investigated with $CO_2$ and $NH_3$-adsorption. From which, relatively different adsorption behaviors of the modified activated carbons were observed in the amounts of $CO_2$ and $NH_3$ adsorptions, even though the physical surface structures of the activated carbons, such as specific surface area, pore size and pore volume, were not significantly changed.

  • Carbon nanotubes, nanofibers and powders were used for acetylene adsorption experiments. A total of 15 different experiments were designed by 3-level of Box-Behnken Design (BBD) with 3 factors including the Pd concentration of 0 to 5%, adsorption temperature of 30 to $80^{\circ}C$ and $C_2H_2/CO_2$ of 3 to 10. Based on those data, a second order polynomial regression analysis was used to derive the adsorption amount prediction equation according to operating conditions. The adsorption temperature showed the greatest influence index while the $C_2H_2/CO_2$ ratio showed the smallest according to the F-value measurement of the ANOVA analysis. However, there was little interaction between major factors. In the adsorption optimization analysis, a 22.0 mmol/g was adsorbed under the conditions of Pd concentration of 3.0%, adsorption temperature of $47^{\circ}C$ and $C_2H_2/CO_2$ of 10 with 95.9% accuracy.

  • In this work, it was investigated the usability of artificial bee colony (ABC) and genetic algorithm (GA) in modeling adsorption of Co(II) onto drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS). DWTS, obtained as inevitable byproduct at the end of drinking water treatment stages, was used as an adsorbent without any physical or chemical pre-treatment in the adsorption experiments. Firstly, DWTS was characterized employing various analytical procedures such as elemental, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, XRD, XRF and TGA/DTA analysis. Then, adsorption experiments were carried out in a batch system and DWTS's Co(II) removal potential was modelled via ABC and GA methods considering the effects of certain experimental parameters (initial pH, contact time, initial Co(II) concentration, DWTS dosage) called as the input parameters. The accuracy of ABC and GA method was determined and these methods were applied to four different functions: quadratic, exponential, linear and power. Some statistical indices (sum square error, root mean square error, mean absolute error, average relative error, and determination coefficient) were used to evaluate the performance of these models. The ABC and GA method with quadratic forms obtained better prediction. As a result, it was shown ABC and GA can be used optimization of the regression function coefficients in modeling adsorption experiments.

  • Two methods were used to enhance the adsorption capacity of activated carbons. One is to impregnate activated carbons with chemical compounds which have a good affinity for $CO_2$. The other is to activate by heat-treating after impregnation with KOH on activated carbons(AC). The chemical compounds impregnated on AC were alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, and transition metal chlorides. The adsorption capacity of $CO_2$ on AC impregnated with these metals was less than that of pure AC. These compounds have not the chemical affinity for $CO_2$ and obstruct the micropore of AC. The experiment of breakthrough for $CO_2$ on AC impregnated with KOH showed the increase of the adsorbed amount of $CO_2$ in influent gases containing water vapor. This means that KOH adsorbes $CO_2$ gas. However, the adsorbents impregnated with KOH had not the reproducibility because of the production of $K_2CO_3$ by the reaction of KOH with $CO_2$. The amount of $CO_2$ adsorbed on the heat-treated AC at $800^{\circ}C$ increased with the amount of impregnation. The adsorption capacity of $CO_2$ was the largest when the ratio of weight of KOH to AC equal to 4. The isosteric heat of adsorption was calculated by the equation of Clausius-Clapeyron form adsorption capacity data of $CO_2$ for the temperature change. In addition, the characteristics of $CO_2$ breakthrough curve were surveyed for the change of flow rate and concentration.

  • Covalent functionalization of a $Zn_{12}O_{12}$ nano-cage with $CO_2$ molecule in terms of energetic, geometry, and electronic properties was investigated by density functional theory method. For chemisorption configurations, the adsorption energy of $CO_2$ on the $Zn_{12}O_{12}$ nano-cage for the first $CO_2$ was calculated -1.25 eV with a charge transfer of 1.00|e| from the nano-cage to the $CO_2$ molecule. The results show that $CO_2$ molecule was significantly detected by pristine $Zn_{12}O_{12}$ nano-cage, therefore the nano-cage can be used as $CO_2$ storage. Also, more efficient binding could not be achieved by increasing the $CO_2$ concentration. For Physisorption configurations, HOMO-LUMO gap of the configurations has not changed, while slight changes have been observed in the chemisorption configurations.

  • Adsorption is a plausible technology using solid adsorbents for dry capture of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). In general, narrow size distribution of tiny pores and surface chemical functionalities of solid adsorbents enhance the adsorption capacity of gaseous $CO_2$ molecules. In order to utilize the advantages of fibrous adsorbents, this work prepared activated carbon nanofibers (ACNFs) via the electrospinning process using a polymer precursor of polyacylonitrile (PAN). The spun fibers were 390 nm to 580 nm in thickness with an average surface area of $27.3m^2/g$. The surface structure was improved by a programmed thermal activation at $800^{\circ}C$ in $CO_2$ atmosphere. It was also found that the nitrogen-groups including pyrrole and pyridine were created during the activation facilitaing the selective adsorption as forming enhanced active sites. The finally obtained adsorption capacities were 2.74 mmol/g for pure $CO_2$ flow and 0.74mmol/g for 3000 ppm.

  • In this study, carbon aerogel (CA) was synthesized using a soft-template method, and the optimum conditions for the adsorption of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) by the carbon aerogel were evaluated by controlling the activation temperature. KOH was used as the activation agent at a KOH/CA activation ratio of 4:1. Three types of activated CAs were synthesized at activation temperatures of $800^{\circ}C$(CA-K-800), $900^{\circ}C$(CA-K-900), and $1000^{\circ}C$(CA-K-1000), and their surface and pore characteristics along with the $CO_2$ adsorption characteristics were examined. The results showed that with the increase in activation temperature from 800 to $900^{\circ}C$, the total pore volume and specific surface area sharply increased from 1.2165 to $1.2500cm^3/g$ and 1281 to $1526m^2/g$, respectively. However, the values for both these parameters decreased at temperatures above $1000^{\circ}C$. The best $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of 10.9 wt % was obtained for the CA-K-900 sample at 298 K and 1 bar. This result highlights the importance of the structural and textural characteristics of the carbon aerogel, prepared at different activation temperatures on $CO_2$ adsorption behaviors.

  • A new copper adenine MOF (Bio-MOF) was synthesized by hydrothermal procedure and explored for its low temperature $CO_2$ adsorption. In this adenine a DNA nucleotide was used as a ligand for Cu in DMF solution at $130^{\circ}C$. The synthesized Bio MOF was characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, TG and BE Tresults. The material possesses high surface area (716.08 $m^2g^{-1}$) with mono dispersed particles of about 2.126 nm. The maximum $CO_2$ adsorption capacity is 5wt% at $50^{\circ}C$, which is regenerable at $100^{\circ}C$ which is very low when compared to other metal organic frame work studied. This study proves that the synthesized material is also be a choice materials for low temperature $CO_2$adsorption.

  • In this study, chitosan/zeolite composites were prepared by using basalt-based zeolite impregnated with aqueous chitosan solution for the adsorptive separation of CO2. The prepared composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption analysis. In addition, the adsorption equilibrium isotherms for CO2 and N2 were measured at 298 K using a volumetric adsorption system, and the results were analyzed by applying adsorption isotherm equations (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips) and energy distribution function. It was found that CO2 adsorption capacities were well correlated with the structural characteristics of chitosan and zeolite, and the ratio of elements [N/C, Al/(Si + Al)] formed on the surface of the composite. Moreover, the CO2/N2 adsorption selectivity was calculated under the mixture conditions of 15 V : 85 V, 50 V : 50 V, and 85 V : 15 V using the Langmuir equation and the ideal adsorption solution theory (IAST).

  • Pressure swing adsorption is a purification process which can get pure hydrogen. The purification process is composed of four process: compression, adsorption, desorption and discharge. In this study the adsorption process was simulated by using the Fluent and validated with experimental results. A gas used in experiment is composed of H2, CO2, CH4, and CO. Adsorption process conducted under 313 kelvin and 3 bar and bituminous-coal-based (BPL) activated carbon was used as the adsorbent. Langmuir model was applied to explain the gas adsorption. And diffusion of all the gases was controlled by micro-pore resistances. The result shows that, the most adsorbed gas was carbon dioxide, followed by methane and carbon monoxide. And carbon monoxide took the least amount of time to reach the maximum adsorption amount. The molar fraction of the off-gas became the same as the molar fraction of the gas supplied from the inlet after adsorption reached the equilibrium.
