  • This paper presents the development of a Parallel-Typed CNC Machining Tool. It is specially designed to machine a complex shaped workpiece by controlling the orientation of the tool. The inverse/direct kinematics of a parallel mechanism is derived and implemented in a PC based controller. With graphics icons, the GUI (Graphic User Interface) program is developed for the CNC programing. The calibration is accomplished by geometric constraint motion, which is a parallel motion of the platform with respect to a table. The calibration result is introduced and the future study is proposed.

  • In the cutting of plate steel, the quality of the cut surfaces is strongly dependent on the cutting conditions such as cutting speed, kerf width, plate thickness, length of tip-specimen and oxygen pressure etc. the cutting tests of plate steel were carried out using CNC gas cutting machine. this paper deals with cutting characteristics of plate steel using CNC cutting machine. the width of cutting entrance and exit, the surface roughness of cutting surfaces and the cutting surface are examined at various cutting conditions.

  • Internet provides the useful method to monitor the current states of the machine tool no matter where a personnel is monitoring them. In this paper, a monitoring method of the torque of the machine tool's spindle induction motor using internet is suggested. The torque of vector controlled induction motor is estimated without speed measuring sensor. Only stator currents are measured to estimate the magnetizing current which is used to calculate flux linkage, rotor velocity and motor torque. Graphical programming is used to implement the suggested algorithm, to monitor the torque of an induction motor in real time and to make the estimated torque monitored on client computers. To solve the fluctuation problem of estimated torque caused from instantly varying rotating speed of an induction motor, the rotating speed is reconstructed based on the measured current signals. Mechanical part of the machine tool is also reconstructed using the data obtained from preliminary experiments. Torque of the spindle induction motor is well monitored on the client computers with 3% error range under various cutting conditions.

  • Dieless CNC forming is an innovative technology which can form various materials with complex shape by numerically controlled incremental forming process. In this paper, a method of NC tool path generation based on an STL file for dieless CNC forming is proposed. Tool trajectory adopts the principle of layered manufacturing in rapid prototyping technology, but it is necessary to consider STL offset because of the ball shaped tool with a radius. Vertex offset method which enables to compute offset STL directly is engaged for STL offset. The offseted STL is sliced by cutting planes to generate contouring tool path. Algorithm is implemented on a computer and experimented on a dieless CNC forming machine to show its validity.

  • Interactive Measuring part Program Generating Tools (IMPPGT) realized on the FANUC 15MA using touch trigger probes and interactive macro functions os the CNC were developed for an intelligent measuring and inspection systems on the machine tools. Menu driven measuring and inspection functions of the IMPPGT were studied and implemented on the CNC through the macro executer and ROM writer. In order to automate measurement and inspection procedures in machine shops measuring G Code system was also proposed. Using the developed measuring G Code system on the machine tool untended measurement and inspection operation was able to be realized in FMS lines.

  • Recently, there is an increasing need for highly precise processing with the rapid development of precision machinery, electrical and electronics, and semiconductor industries. Cutting machine control relies on the operator's sense and experience in tradition, but it has been greatly enhanced by the adoption of CNC(Computerized Numeric Controller). In addition, cutting dynamics technology has been paid attention to reflect the operating state of machine in real time. This paper presents a method to detect and stabilize tool vibration by attaching an acoustic sensor to a CNC machine. The sensed acoustic data is synchronized with the tool position and the abnormal vibration frequency is separated from the collected acoustic frequency, then analyzed to detect the tool vibration. Also the reliability the tool vibration detection and stabilization is improved by applying the cutting dynamic method. The proposed method is analyzed and evaluated in terms of the surface roughness.

  • Recently, a computer numerical control (CNC) machine is used widely for mold making in various industries. In the operation of a CNC machine, the production quality and safety of workers are becoming increasingly important as the product process increases. A variety of tool life prediction studies has been conducted to standardize the quality of production and improve reproducibility. When the tool life is predicted using the conventional tool life equation, there is a large error between the experimental result and result by the conventional tool life equation. In this paper, an algorithm that can predict the precise tool life was implemented using a genetic algorithm.

  • For the machining of the sculptured surfaces on 5-axis CNC milling machine, the milling cutter direction vector was determined in the study (I) with 5-axis post-processing. Thus, it was possible to cut the sculptured surfaces on five-axis CNC milling machine with the end mill cutter. Then, for smooth machined surfaces in five-axis machining of free-from surfaces, this study develops an algorithm for prediction of cusp heights. Also, it generates tool path such that the cusp heights are constrained to a constant value or under a certain value. For prediction of the cusp height between two basis points, a common plane, containing the line crossing two basis points and the summation vector of two normal vectors at two basis points, is defined. The cusp height is the maximum value of scallops on the common plane after end mill cutter passes through the common plane. Sculptured surfaces were machined with CINCINNATI MILACRON 5-axis machining center, model 20V-80, using end mill cutter. Cusp heights were verified by 3-dimensional measuring machine with laser scanner, WEGU Messtechnik GmbH.
