  • The conventional computerized numerical controller (CNC) of machine tools has been increasingly replaced by a PC-based open architecture CNC (OAC) that is independent of a CNC vendor. The OAC and machine tools with an OAC have led to a convenient environment in which user-defined applications can be efficiently implemented within a CNC. This paper proposes a method of diagnosing the cause of operational faults. The method is based on the status of a programmable logic controller in machine tools with an OAC. An operational fault is defined as a disability that occurs during the normal operation of machine tools. Operational faults constitute more than 70 percent of all faults and are also unpredictable because most of them occur without any warning. To quickly and correctly diagnose the cause of an operational fault, two diagnostic models are proposed: the switching function and the step switching function. The cause of the fault is logically diagnosed through a fault diagnosis system using diagnostic models. A suitable interface environment between a CNC and developed application modules is constructed to implement the diagnostic functions in the CNC domain. The results of the diagnosis were displayed on a CNC monitor for machine operators and transmitted to a remote site through a Web browser. The proposed diagnostic method and its results were useful to unskilled machine operators and reduced the machine downtime.

The OAC and machine tools with OAC led the convenient environment where it is possible to implement user-defined application programs efficiently within CNC. Tis paper proposes a method of operational fault cause diagnosis which is based on the status of programmable logic controller (PLC) in machine tools with OAC. The operational fault is defined as a disability state occurring during normal operation of machine tools. The faults are occupied by over 70% of all faults and are also unpredictable as most of them occur without any warning. Two diagnosis models, the switching function (SF) and the step switching function (SSF), are propose in order to diagnose the fault cause quickly and exactly. The cause of an occurring fault is logically diagnosed through a fault diagnosis system (FDS) using the diagnosis models. A suitable interface environment between CNC and develope application modules is constructed in order to implement the diagnostic functions in the CNC domain. The diagnosed results were displayed on a CNC monitor for machine operators and provided to a remote site through a web browser. The result of his research could be a model of the fault cause diagnosis and the remote monitoring for machine tools with OAC.

  • In this paper, we propose software algorithms which provide acceleration/deceleration characteristics essential to high dynamic performance at the transient states where industrial robots or CNC machine tools start and stop. Software acceleration/deceleration methods are derived from the mathematical analyses of typical hardware systems controlling acceleration/deceleration. These methods make servo motors, which drive axes of motion, start and stop smoothly without vibration in the repeated tools. The path error, which is one of the most significant factors in the performance evaluation of industrial robots or CNC machine tools, is analyzed for linear, exponential, and parabolic acceleration/deceleration algorithms in case of circular interpolation. The analyses show that path error consists of the distance between the required path and generated one through acceleration/deceleration, and that between the generated one through acceleration/deceleration algorithm and the actual one of the end effector of the industrial robot or tool of the CNC equipment.

  • In order to make industrial robots and CNC machine tools perform tasks efficiently, each axis has to be accelearated and decelerated appropriately. The existing techniques for the acceleration and deceleration of industrial robots and CNC machine tools are not efficient to generate velocity profiles. Thus, these previous techniques cannot generate velocity generating velocity profiles that cannot be generated by them. Based on the proposed approach, an acceleration and deceleration circuit for industrial robots and CNC machine tools is designed with a FPGA by using the VHDL.

  • Recently, demand on machine tools has been increased because the machine and automobile industry is booming. Therefore, the machine tools need to have a high accuracy and productivity. To build a high precision machine tool and increase its productivity, structural analysis needs to be carried out for vibration and stiffness of the machine tool before its detail design. However, it is the fact that many manufacturers of machine tools depend on their know-how about design experience. Therefore, in this paper, the static and dynamic analysis is carried out for evaluating a horizontal CNC lathe and then, applied to its detail design. It is positive that the analysis can lead to reduction of design time and improvement of the quality of the lathe as its design proceeds.

  • We have investigated the variation of dwell and warm-up time for effects of positioning accuracy of the CNC machine tools with an laser measuring system. Also, we strdied the effect of improvement of the positioning accuracy by variation of the temperature for hollow ball screw, which mostly used as drive mechanism of CNC machine tools. We dbtained the effectiveness of cooling effect of the new cooling system, compared with the conventional cooling system.

  • In order to improve in quality and productivity using the CNC machine tools, it has been endeavored to elevate production process by adding supplementary axes(2 axes) to 2,3 axial CNC machine tools. It is because the movement between the progress of work in processed goods is remarkably decreased more than that of general CNC machine tools that productivity improvement with precision maintenance can be improved. VBScript in CAD/CAM is applied to utilize CNC machine tools added supplementary axes so that Multi-axial &Multi-process manufacturin g program can be conveniently drawn up. However, there is generally much skilful work and operation by the manual program of CAD(2.5D) and CNC machine tools in the filed. As a result of conducting an experiment by COM-filing VBScript at the spot of Insert Tip for milling Face Cutter in CAD/CAM Software(2.5D), it was not only timesaving to draw up program but also more convenient than complicated Multi CAD/CAM Software to approach and possible to program various products instantaneously.

  • The drum cam with rotational follower is used to apply the ATC and index table of machine tools and it has the merit of minimizing the backlash. In general, to machine the drum cam with rotational follower, 5-axis CNC machine must be used and its kinematic principle must be included in modeling on CAM. So, the commercialized CAM software can't be applied to this machining of drum cam. Though some special software for machining drum cam was developed, it could be applied to special 5-axis CNC machine tools and the finish machining module was not applied. To solve this problem, this study includes the induction of the post processing algorithm for the rough machining of drum cam on several 5-axis CNC machine tools, type AC, AB and Be. The finish machining software will be treated in next study. A sample drum cam was machined on 5-axis CNC machine tool of AC type. The designed geometric profile of drum cam consist to the measured profile after machining well. This post processing algorithm for rough machining of the drum cam was clearly verified.

  • In operating automated manufacturing system, the long term stability and reliability of NC machine tools become most critical issues. Especially the machining accuracy is dominated by the thermal deformation of machine tools which remains still unsolved and causes troubles in manufacturing operations. Although researches have been carried out on the thermal behavior of a machine tools to minimize or control the thermal deformation of machine tools, the computer models for an analysis of the thermal behacior in machine tools has yet to appear in the open literature. The object of the paper is to present a method of modeling the thermal behavior of a machine tool. The method will make use of finite elements ad be capable of modeling whole machine structures as well as of heat generation processes in the kinematic system components. And temperature distributions and thermal deformations of a CNC lathe are analyzed using the finite element method and are compared with those measured in practice.
