  • Cr(VI) reduction was successfully achieved in the presence of cationic micelles (CMs) under visible light illumination. Micelle formation of cationic surfactants seems to be critical in Cr(VI) reduction. Cr(VI) was reduced very fast above the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of CTAB solutions, but was not reduced at all either below or around the cmc of CTAB. The reduction rate of Cr(VI) was enhanced in the absence of dissolved oxygen, supporting that the removal of Cr(VI) should be achieved via a reductive pathway. When CTAB was substituted by Brij 35 or SDS, the reduction of Cr(VI) was negligible. This indicates that the electrostatic interaction between Cr(VI) and headgroups of surfactants is important in the visible light-induced Cr(VI) reduction in micellar solutions.

  • The comparative detergency of Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution near the first critical micelle concentration (CMC) was measured by means of a 131 I-labelled castor oil as a soil. More than 95% radiochemical purity of 131 I-labelled castor oil was obtained using potassium lidide as a carrier. Polyester test fabric was soiled with 131 I-labelled castor oil, and washed in a conventional washing apparatus mounted on appropriate devices. Fabric radioactivities were measured before and after washing by a scintilation counter. Near the first CMC, the detergency of SDS was increased with decreasing of surface tension of SDS. It was also shown that 131 I-labelled castor oil was useful for studying the detergency of SDS.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in some alcohol-aqueous solutions were determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy at 25$25^{\circ}C$. The CMC of CPC was increased with the addition of methanol and ethanol, while with the addition of propanol it was decreased because of the solubilization of propanol into the micelle of CPC. The ratio (${\beta}$) of the number of counterions to that of surfactant ions associated into micelles in alcohol (methanol, ethanol and propanol) aqueous solutions was measured by using the Shinoda $equation^{17}$. The ratio of counterion binding to the CPC micelles in methanol-and ethanol-water mixtures was larger than in pure water, while the ratio in propanol-water mixture might be much decreased.

  • The solution properties of sodium n-dodecyl sulfate, as an anionic surfactant in the presence of a cationic watersoluble 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis (N-methylpyridinium-4-yl) porphyrin (TMPyP) has been comprehensively studied by means of conductometry, UV-vis and resonance light scattering (RLS) spectroscopies. The results represent the decreasing of critical micelle concentration of SDS solution due to increasing of TMPyP concentration. The stabilization of SDS micelle is due to neutralization of negative charge at the micelle surface. The presence of three different species of TMPyP in SDS solution has been unequivocally demonstrated: free porphyrin monomers, porphyrin monomers or aggregates bound to the micelles, and nonmicellar porphyrin/surfactant aggregates. Our results show SDS induced an aggregation in TMPyP. In fact two kinds of J-aggregations were observed: one of them for porphyrin monomers or aggregates bound to the micelles and the other for nonmicellar porphyrin/surfactant aggregates. However, the results represent the electrostatic interaction of TMPyP with SDS anion below the cmc.

  • Platinum plays an important role in many applications because of its extraordinary physical and chemical properties. All these applications require the use of platinum in the finely divided state. Therefore the preparation of platinum nanoparticles by reducing platinum-surfactant salt with reducing agent in the solution was investigated in this study. The net interaction between C14TABr and $H_2[PtCl_6]$ in aqueous solution results in the formation of $[C14TA]_2[PtCl_6]$. The concentration of C14TABr and the concentration of $H_2[PtCl_6]$ has to be above cmc and 0.32 mM, respectively in order to obtain complex-micelle aggregation for mono dispersed Pt particles. Pt particle size increases with increasing $H_2[PtCl_6]$ and C14TABr concentration. And the shape of Pt particles was well controlled with increasing surfactant concentration.

  • In this study, a cationic surfactant BHMAS (N,N-bis-(3'-n-dodecyloxy-2'-hydroxypropyl)-N-methyl-2-hydroxyethylammonium methyl sulfate) having two lauryl and three hydroxyl groups was synthesized by the reaction of n-dodecyl glycidyl ether and 2-aminoethanol followed by the quarternization with dimethyl sulfate. The structure of the product was elucidated by $^{1}H-NMR$ and FT-IR. The CMC (critical micelle concentration) and surface tension of BHMAS at CMC condition were found to be $9.12\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$ mol/L and 28.71 mN/m respectively. Dynamic surface tension measurements using a maximum bubble pressure tensiometer indicated that a relatively long time was required to saturate the interface between air and aqueous surfactant solution. The interfacial tension measured between 1 wt% surfactant solution and n-decane reached an equilibrium value of 0.045 mN/m in 5 min. The adsorption capacity of the synthesized surfactant was observed to be excellent, which suggests that the surfactant can be used as a softening agent during a laundry process.

  • Polyurethane(PU) prepolymer was synthesized from ethylene oxide/propylene oxide(EO/PO) random polyether polyol, toluene diisocyanate and chain extender such as ethylene glycol and 1,4-butanediol. PU foams having various compositions were fabricated from PU prepolymers with different hard segment contents(%) and mixed foaming solution of different compositions. PU foam from chain extender-introduced PU prepolymer and mixed foaming solution containing glycerin showed better mechanical property than other groups. Various PU foams were tested on their mechanical property, moisture vapor transmission rate, absorption speed, absorptivity, morphology and cell culture test. According to the test, the PU foam fabricated from chain extender-introduced PU prepolymer and mixed foaming solution containing optimum composition of F-68, glycerin and CMC was found to have the best property for wound dressing materials. From in vivo animal study, it was confirmed that above PU foam showed rapid wound recovery.

  • The effects of $Ca^{2+}$ ion on the charge transfer(CT) interaction of $4-(C_9H_{19})C_6H_4O(CH_2CH_2O)_{40} [NP-(EO)_{40}]$ with iodine in aqueous solution were investigated by UV-visible spectrophotometer. Maximum absorption wavelengths to the CT interaction were in the vicinity of 390 nm, and by the addition of $Ca^{2+}$ ion shifted toward 370 nm. Above CMC, the intensity of the CT interaction by the addition of $Ca^{2+}$ ion were increased and then decreased. The increase in the intensity of CT band were attributed to the increase of the donor-acceptor overlap with iodine caused by the compactness of micelle in the presence of $Ca^{2+}$ ion. These phenomena suggest that the linear oxyethylene(EO) chains, relatively free to assume various configuration in aqueous solution, could form a pseudo-crown ether structures capable of forming complexes with $Ca^{2+}$ ion.

  • A bacterium producing the extracellular cellulase was isolated from cattle feces and screened as cellulase activity was excellent upon congo red straining method and activity measurements. Isolate was identified as Bacillus subtilis CH-10 on the basis of morphological and biochemical properties as well as cellular fatty acids composition. The enzyme which the isolate secretes had the optimum initial pH and temperature for its induction was 7.5 and 50${\circ}C$, respectively. The maximum CMCase activity in crude enzyme solution was observed at pH 7.5 and 75${\circ}C$ and was stable for pH 7.5 to 9.0 to maintain 70% activity. When the isolate was cultured in CMC media at 37${\circ}C$ for 24 hrs, CMCase and FPase activity was 1.13 U/㎖and 0.16U/㎖, respectively whereas Avicelase and ${\beta}$-glucosidase activity was not detected. When crude supernatant was used for zymogram, three major bands, cel 1, cel 2 and cel 3, were detected approximately 39, 41 and 57 KDa, respectively on CMC-SDS-PAGE.

  • 1. Crude cellulase extracted from wheat bran media of Chaetomium globosum with pH 7.0 McIlvaine buffer was fractionated by precipitation with ammonium sulfate and by treatment with the cellulose powder, DEAE-Sephadex A-25 and Amberite XE-65 (IRC-50) column chromatography. 2. Consquently two cellulases C-1 and C-2 were obtained by cellulose column chromatography. Cellulose C-1 was a powerful CMC-saccharifying and CMC-liquefying activity but cellulose C-2 was stronger CMC-liquefying activity compared to CMC-saccharifying activity and cellulase C-2 had smaller protein than that of cellulose C-1. And cellulose C-2 was fractionated by DEAE-Sephadex A-25 column chromatography into cellulase C-1-1 and cellulose C-1-2. 3. It can be obtained, therefore, that cellulose produced Chaelomium globosum consisted, at least, of three cellulases C-2, C-1-1 and C-1-2. 4. Cellulose C-1-1 was homogenous in the ultraviolet and the ultracentrifuge pattern. And cellulose C-1-1 had enzyme for CMC-saccharifying activity. 5. The optimum pH for the enzyme activity of cellulose C-1-1 was 4.0 in any methods of meas urement reducing sugar and viscosity. The optimum temperature was $40^{\circ}C$ in any methods. 6. The pH stability of cellulase C-1-1 was within pH 5.0 to pH 6.0 at $40^{\circ}C$ and fairly stable in acidic solution. 7. The heat stability was below $50^{\circ}C$ at pH 4.0 and complete heat inactivation of this cellulase occurred at $70^{\circ}C$.
