  • Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is undoubtedly one of the most influential concepts to have been introduced into the manufacturing world in recent times. The successful CIM application is greatly depended on the way of the approach to given manufacturing environments. This paper suggests a new approach in building CIM systems and also discusses roles of a open cell controller for this purpose.

  • As the significance of quality in the sense of customer satisfaction is growing, the management of quality becomes one of the main interests in the manufacturing systems research. This paper presents the concept of quality-driven CIM(Computer Integrated Manufacturing) system which is composed of a business process domain and a quality domain. In the business process domain, business functions are integrated by conventional design and manufacturing databases on the one hand, and an integrated quality system is interlinked to them via several quality modules on the other hand. Quality information model connects the business process domain with the quality domain where various types of quality data are stored in the form of quality database. This framework helps a manufacturing enterprise to implement the quality-driven CIM system to achieve its final objective "customer satisfaction".ion".uot;.

  • One of the consideration issue in implementation and maintanence of CIM(Computer Integrated Manufacturing) database is exchange and sharing of information between heterogeneous databases. For efficient operating of SIM systems, it must be able to organize and to manage the information. In this paper, we propose method that can make enhance the efficiency of CIM database, classfying the data in database using self organize neural network to each database systems, and computing between classfied heterogeneous database using extended operator that is defined.

  • A major problem in the adoption of advanced manufacturing systems such as C.I.M. (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) is the prerequisite economic justification Process because of high investment needed for the acquisition and installation of C.I.M. While some of the benefits expected are readily qualifiable, others are very difficult or even impossible, using conventional method. Thus the investment in C.I.M. should be considered as a strategic decision rather than a tactical decision which concerns with only financial implications. In this Paper we review papers on major justification techniques developed during the last decade and identify the benefits of C.I.M. and describe the considerations in the justification of C.I.M. Also we deal with the current and future research directions in justifying C.I.M.

  • This paper describes computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems as strategic information systems for business which play an important role in accelerating the speed of business, and develops a measure showing a degree of business tendency to be CIM which enables the business to check on its present status as far as CIM is concerned. It is well known that the productivity of knowledge workers is lower than that of other workers. Nowadays, a great deal of effort goes into the productivity improvement of knowledge workers. In this respect, this paper also develops a quantitative model for the productivity of knowledge workers. Finally, this paper deals with following four steps which our small business should follow through its process of CIM: [Step 1] Using expert knowledge; [Step 2] Invention of technological information; [Step 3] Feedback of factory information to the management; and, [Step 4] Accelerating the speed of business.

  • Two key data areas of the integrated production database in computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems are the product structure in the forms of bills of material(BOM) and the process structure in the forms of routings. The great majority of existing information systems regard the BOM and routing as two separate data entities, possibly with some degree of cross-referencing. This paper proposes new information structure called the bills of material and routings(BMR) that logically integrates the BOM and routings for the CIM systems in ship production. The characteristics of ship production are described as: 1) make-to-order production type, 2) combined manufacturing principles (workshop production and construction site production), 3) significant overlapping of design, planning and manufacturing, 4) very long order throughput time, 5) complex product structure and production process. The proposed BMR systematically manages ail parts and operations data needed ship production considering characteristics of ship production. Also, the BMR situated on the integrated production database more efficiently supports interface between engineering and production functions, and integrates a wide variety of functions within production such as production planning, process planning, operation scheduling, material planning, costing etc., and simplifies information flow between sub-systems in CIM systems.

  • 최근 제조업과 공작기계 기술에 있어 세계를 지배하는 추세는 CIM (computer integrated manufacturing)의 도입이다. 그 이유는 CIM을 도입하여 발전시키고 개발시키는 국가에 대해서 장기적인 경제적, 사회적 이익을 주기 때문인 것이다. 이러한 추세는 제조업과 공작기계 분야에 컴퓨터와 관련된 기술의 개발과 응용에 있어 다음의 5가지 영역으로 구분된다. 즉, 일체화된 제조 소프트웨어 시스템 (integrated manufacturing software system), 그룹 기술 (group technology), 구획식제온 (cellular manufacturing), 공작기계의 컴퓨터제어 및 시험, 그리고 컴퓨터 제어식 산업 로봇(robot) 및 가변 제조(flexible manufacturing)이다. 미국에서 이러한 각 분야에 행해지고 있는 예로 응용되고 있으며, CIM이 가져다 주는 경제적, 사회적 이익을 추구 하는 국가들에 의해 많이 연구되고 있다. 이러한 노력은 이십세기말 이전에 이들 국가의 제조 업에 대단한 변화를 가져올 것이다.

  • This study investigates the reasons why firms choose to adopt CIM technologies and the decision making process involved in justifying them. In addition, factors that contribute the successful implementation of CIM are identified. Finally, this suggests a strategical model based on the above result of analysis with investigating the justification, evaluation, implementation, and adaptation of CIM.

  • Characteristics of the present world market include demanding and sophisticated customers, requirement of high quality and innovative products, greater product diversity, increasing labour and products costs, availability of diverse alternatives to the customers and smaller batch sizes to satisfy a variety of customer profiles. To fulfil these characteristics, manufacturing companies need to be flexible adaptable, proactive and able to produce variety of products in short time at low cost. The aim of the study is to develop a computer-aided design system for water-gate on AutoCAD R2000 system. The developed system has been written in AutoCAD and VisualLISP with a personal computer, and is composed four modules which are the gate-lifter input module, guide-frame input module, and upgrade module. Based on knowledge-based rules, the system is designed by considering several factors, such as width and height of a water-gate, material, object of product and maximum depth of water.
