Purpose: This study was evaluated the shade of feldspathic porcelain with various concentration of silver ion. Materials and Methods: The control group was conventional feldspathic porcelain with no silver ion, the experimental groups were the feldpathic porcelain with 5%, 10%, 20%, 30% silver ion. The number of specimens on the each group was 5. Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage (CIE) $L^*a^*b^*$ parameters were recorded twice for each specimen with a spectrophotometer (Model CM-2600d, Minolta, Japan). One-way Anova was used for statistical analysis. Results: L value was similar. a value was increasing and b value was decreasing with silver ion statistically significantly. ${\Delta}E$ was increasing according to silver ion significantly. Conclusion: The shade of feldspahtic porcelain was influenced by silver ion. Ag ion under 10% concentration is acceptable clinically.
To get a satisfactory result in the composite resin restorations, it is necessary to choose correct shade. At present, most of the commercial composite resins are based on the Vita Lumin shade guide or Bioform shade guide, but color differences might be expected even using the same shade in various materials. In this study, five kinds of light-cured composite resins with A2 and B3 shade were used to measure and compare the color each other while one porcelain served as a control. All composite resins (Spectrum TPH (SP), VeridonFil- Photo (VE), Z100 (Z100), Charisma (CH), Prodigy (PRO)) were filled in to the metal mold (12 mm diameter, 2 mm depth), followed by compression, polymerization and polishing with wet sandpaper. The specimens of porcelain were fabricated by using the refractory mold for porcelain. After 24 hours, the specimens were placed on the spectrocolorimeter and spectral reflectance were measured under CIE illuminant D65. After measuring the values of $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ and ${\Delta}E^*$, following results were obtained; 1. The $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of both shade of porcelain specimens showed significantly higher than those of resin specimens(p<0.05). 2. In comparing the resin specimens of the A2 shade, differences were significant except $L^*$ values of SP-CH and PRO-VE, $a^*$ values of the VE-SP and $b^*$ values of the VE-Z100 and SP-PRO(p<0.05), 3. In comparing the resin specimens of the B3 shade, differences were significant except $L^*$ values of PRO-SP, $a^*$ values of the SP-PRO and Z100-VE and b* values of the PRO-SP(p<0.05). 4. In comparing the resin specimens of the A2 shade, color differences between materials (${\Delta}E^*$) showed the lowest value of 1.66, and the highest was 5.16. ${\Delta}E^*$ values of the materials of VE-PRO, CH-PRO, SP-PRO, SP-Z100 and SP-CH were lower than 3.3. 5. In comparing the resin specimens of the B3 shade, the lowest value of the ${\Delta}E^*$ was 0.57 and the highest was 5.92. ${\Delta}E^*$ values of Z100-CH and SP-PRO were lower than 3.3. The present study revealed there was perceptible color difference between materials even if they have the same designated shade based on Vita shade guide. The results of the present study suggested that it would be necessary to establish the reproducible and constant color specification system for an esthetic restoration.
Statement of problem: Recently, as patients' expectation and interest for esthetics are increasing, concerns of esthetic restoration for removable dentures as well as fixed prosthodontics are also increasing. And the color stability of artificial teeth will affect a long term success rate of the denture. But the stain or discoloration of these artificial teeth as well as denture resin has caused esthetic problem. Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the influence on color stability of artificial teeth when soy sauce, red pepper paste and coffee which many Koreans have eaten were applied. Material and methods: For artificial teeth type(Endura $Anterio^{(R)}$, Physio $Duracross^{(R)}$, Trubyte $Biotone^{(R)}$) selected for the study, 10 specimens each were soaked into individual beakers of soy sauce, red pepper paste, coffee and distilled water. And $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ value were measured for evaluation of the color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) with spectrophotometer on the 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks after immersion. Results: 1. ${\Delta}E^*$ value of artificial teeth which were soaked in soy sauce and coffee was various according to soaking periods. However there was significant difference between Trubyte $Biotone^{(R)}$ and Physio $Duracross^{(R)}$ in red pepper paste regardless of soaking period(P<.05). 2. Except for 8 weeks of Endura $Anterio^{(R)}$, 4 weeks and 8 weeks of Physio $Duracross^{(R)}$, artificial teeth soaked in red pepper paste regardless of the type had significant difference of ${\Delta}E^*$ value compared with other groups (P<.05). 3. $a^*$, $b^*$ value of Endura $Anterio^{(R)}$ and Trubyte $Biotone^{(R)}$ which were soaked in red pepper paste had significant difference compared with the value of other group(P<.05). Conclusion: Red pepper paste had the greatest effect on color difference of artificial tooth. Physio $Duracross^{(R)}$ showed relatively less color difference than Trubyte $Biotone^{(R)}$ and Endura $Anterio^{(R)}$. But as ${\Delta}E^*$ difference were all less than 3.3, these artificial resin teeth seemed appropriate for clinical use.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to colorimetrically evaluate the masking effect of different opacity of ingots on the final shade of IPS Empress Esthetic$^{(R)}$ laminate veneer restorations using the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ system. Materials and methods: Six porcelain disks of IPS Empress Esthetic$^{(R)}$ system (translucency: E 01, E 03, E 0C-1, E TC-1, E TC-2, E TC-3) were fabricated with 7 mm in diameter and 0.6 mm in thickness. Six extracted human incisors (shade: A1, A3, A4, B2, B3, C3) were used as the abutment specimens. The incisors were prepared using a diamond wheel and made with a flat labial surface on the middle 1/3. For each combination of different shades of abutments and copings, the change in color was measured with a colorimeter. CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ coordinates were recorded for each specimen. Color differences (${\Delta}E$) were calculated. Descriptive statistical analysis was done. Results: ${\Delta}E$ values were significantly affected by coping translucency and abutment shade (P<.05). The color differences (${\Delta}E$) of laminate veneers among abutments with A3, B3, C3, and A4 shade were mostly below 2.7 which was within the clinically acceptable range, while color differences between A4 and B2, A3 and B2, and A1 and A4 showed more than 2.7. Conclusion: The final color of IPS Empress Esthetic$^{(R)}$ laminate veneers were significantly influenced by translucency of the coping and shade of abutment teeth. The large value difference of abutment teeth limited the masking ability by laminate veneers.

A system which provides multispectral near-IR and visible gray images of objects is constructed and an algorithm is derived to acquire a natural color image of objects from the gray images. A color image of 24 color patches is obtained by recovering their CIE (International Commission on Illumination) LAB color coordinates $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ from their gray images using the algorithm based on polynomial regression. The system is composed of a custom-designed LED illuminator emitting multispectral near-IR illuminations, fluorescent lamps and a monochrome digital camera. Color reproducibility of the algorithm is estimated in CIELAB color difference ${\Delta}E^*_{ab}$. And as a result, if yellow and magenta color patches with around 10 ${\Delta}E^*_{ab}$ are disregarded, the average ${\Delta}E^*_{ab}$ is 2.9, and this value is within the acceptability tolerance for quality evaluation for digital color complex image.
Porcelain and resin are widely used in esthetic dentistry. In the field of esthetic dentistry, the color and color stability of prosthetic materials are very important in esthetics. In this study, porcelain and resin with the same color were used to veneer on the 3 different metal alloys. Color was evaluated by the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ system. The purpose of this study was evaluated the cole, difference and cole, stability of the specimens, according to the veneered materials and types of metal alloys. Specimens were divided into 6 groups as follows ; Group 1; Porcelain on the precious metal alloy Group 2; Porcelain on the semiprecious metal alloy Group 3; Porcelain on the nonprecious metal alloy Group 4; Resin on the precious metal alloy Group 5; Resin on the semiprecious metal alloy Group 6; Resin on the nonprecious metal alloy The results obtained were as follows; 1. In porcelain specimens, $L^*$ values showed no significant difference and $a^*$ value of group 2 was lower than that of groups 1, 3 and $b^*$ value of group 2 was higher than that of groups 1, 3. The ${\Delta}E^*ab$ values between group 1-2, group 2-3 were higher than 1.5. 2. In resin specimens. $L^*$ value of group 6 was lower than that of groups 4, 5, $a^*$ value of group 4 was higher than that of group 6, $b^*$ value of group 4 was higher than that of groups 5, 6. The ${\Delta}E^*ab$ values between group 4-5, group 5-6 were higher than 1.5, and between group 4-6 was higher than 3.0. 3. Comparing with veneered materials, $L^*$ flues of porcelain were higher than that of resin. 3. Comparing with veneered materials, $L^*$ values of porcelain were higher than that of resin. In semiprecious metal alloy, $a^*$ values of porcelain were lower than that of resin. In semiprecious and nonprecious metal alloy, $b^*$ values of porcelain were higher than that of resin. The ${\Delta}E^*ab values were higher than 6.0. 4. The color stability of resin specimen was relatively inferior to porcelain specimen.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface color of indirect resin restoration according to the layering placement of different shade of incisal composite. Materials and Methods: In this study, CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ value of 16 Body composite of Tescera ATL (Bisco, Schaumburg IL,USA) was measured by spectrophotometer (NF999, Nippon Denshuku, Japan), and compared to CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ value of Vitapan shade guide. Nine shade Incisal composite of Tescera ATL were buildup to 1 mm thickness on Body composites inlay block, and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ value was measured. Incisal composite was ground to 0.5 mm thickness and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ value was re-measured. Color difference between Body composite and Incisal composites layered on Body composite was calculated as a function of thickness. Results: Color difference between corresponding shade of Tescera Body composite and Vitapan shade guide was from 6.88 to 12.80. $L^*$ and $b^*$ value was decreased as layering thickness of Incisal composite on Body composite was increased. But, $a^*$ value did not show specific change tendency. Conclusions: Surface color difference between Body composites and Incisal composites layered on Body composite was increased as the layering thickness of Incisal composite increased (p < 0.05).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of color measuring instrument by measuring the color of dental composite resins. Nine shade light cured composite resin disks were prepared (diameter : 15 mm, thickness : 4 mm). CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color scale of each disk was measured with 3 different types of spectrophotometer [MiniScan XE plus (Model 4000S, Hunter Lab, USA), CM-3500d (Minolta, Japan) and Specbos 2100 Miniature VIS Reflection spectrometer (Serial No: 319416, JETI Technishe VIS Instrumentic GmbH. Germany)]. Miniscan XE Plus and CM-3500d using identical measuring geometry with different size of viewing aperture. But Specbos 2100 using different measuring geometry. Within the limitation of this study, there were color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) from 2.4 to 7.8 between Miniscan XE Plus and CM-3500d, but $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values showed the high correlation. However, there were great color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) in the extent of about 20 between instruments with the different measuring geometry. Therefore, color scale measured by color measuring instrument should be used as a relative value rather than an absolute value in the field of dentistry.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare color correspondence of different sizes of Vita Mark II$^{(R)}$ and TriLuxe$^{(R)}$ Feldspar blocks. Methods: The three commercially available shades(1M2, 2M2, 3M2) of Mark II & TriLuxe blocks for the CEREC$^{(R)}$ CAD/CAM system were examined. For each of three colors, three different sizes were tested, 5 blocks each. The measurements were made using a spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere using the CIE $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ colorimetric system. Results: The $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ value of Vita Mark II$^{(R)}$ ceramic block showed significantly higher than TriLuxe$^{(R)}$ ceramic block(p<0.05). In comparing the Vita Mark II$^{(R)}$ specimen of the three different shade, color differences between materials(${\Delta}E^*$) showed the lowest value of 2.09, and the highest was 2.24. ${\Delta}E^*$ values of the materials of Vita Mark II$^{(R)}$ were higher than 2. As the size of ceramic block differed, the color correspondence of Vita Mark II$^{(R)}$ showed statistically significant difference but, this result is clinically acceptable. Conclusion: All the different sizes of the different shades of Vita TriLuxe$^{(R)}$ blocks for the CEREC$^{(R)}$ system showed the high degree of color correspondence necessary in industrially prefabricated CAD/CAM blocks. The results of the present study suggested that it would be necessary to establish the reproducible and constant color specification system for an esthetic restoration.

Statement of problem: All-ceramic restorations have been advocated for superior esthetics. Various post and core systems have been used to improve the strength of damaged teeth, but it is unclear whether they affect the final shade of finished all-ceramic restorations. Purpose: The influence of different types of post and core systems on light transmission through all-ceramic crowns was assessed by spectrophotometric analysis. Also the masking effect of different thickness of ceramic ingot was evaluated. Material and Methods : Forty-five sample disks (15mm in diameter) at several thickness(1.0, 1.5, 2.0mm) and value(shade 100, 200, 300) were made in heat pressed ceramic(IPS-Empress). Background specimens simulating gold-alloy cast posts(Type III casting gold alloy), metal posts(Ni-Cr casting alloy) and ceramic posts(CosmoPost) were fabrica-ted. Resin composite(Z250, A3 shade) was used as a tooth substrate reference. For each combination, the change in color was measured with a spectrophotometer. Readings were performed for 2 conditions (1) ability of ceramic to mask the core in relation to its thickness(1.0, 1.5, or 2.0mm) ; (2) influence of post and core types on the final color of the ceramic. Data were recorded according to the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ systems and color difference($\Delta$E) was calculated. Results: 100 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post larger than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 2. 200 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post was smaller than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5 mm, only the $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. 300 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2 and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. Conclusion: The final esthetic result of the IPS-Empress glass-ceramic restoration was not affected by the presence of different core materials when the thickness was more than 2.0 mm. When ceramic thickness decreases to 1.5mm, it is advised to take the substrate aspects into consideration. If the ceramic thickness is less than 1.0mm, using the tooth color matched substrate is strongly recommended.
