  • Emissions of nitrous oxide (N$_2$O) and methane (CH$_4$) from poultry enteric fermentation were investigated using a respiration chamber. Birds were placed in a respiration chamber for certain intervals during their growing period or for the whole life cycle. The accumulated gas inside the chamber was sampled and analyzed for N$_2$O and CH$_4$ production. A curve for gas production during a life cycle was fitted. The calculated area under the curve estimated the emission factor of poultry enteric fermentation on a life cycle basis (mg bird$^{-1}$ life cycle$^{-1}$). This method can be used to estimate CH$_4$ or N$_2$O emissions from different types of avian species taking into account factors such as diet, season or thermal effects. The CH$_4$/N$_2$O emission factors estimated for commercial broiler chickens, Taiwan country chickens and White Roman Geese were 15.87/0.03, 84.8/16.4 and 1,500/49 (mg bird$^{-1}$ life cycle$^{-1}$), respectively, while the calculated CH$_4$/N$_2$O emission from enteric fermentations were 3.03/0.006, 14.73/2.84 and 9.5/0.31 (Mg year$^{-1}$), respectively in Taiwan in the year of 2000. The described method is applicable to most poultry species and the reported emission factors were applicable to meat type poultry only.

  • The activated carbon fibers of different surface area and pore structures were modified by carbon deposition from the pyrolysis of benzene, in an attempt to obtain carbon molecular sieves of high adsorption capacity and selectivity for the separation of $CO_2/CH_4$ gas mixtures. The ACFs molecular sieves prepared from different temperature and time were tested by the static adsorption of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ gas, and their pore structures were characterized by the $N_2$ adsorption isotherms. We are able to prepare ACF molecular sieve with good selectivity for $CO_2/CH_4$ separation and showing acceptable adsorption capacities from the change of porosity by carbon deposition of pyrolyzed benzene.

  • Theoretical analysis was conducted on the combustion and the NOx formation characteristics of the coal-derived synthetic gases with medium-BTU heating value. The synthetic gas was assumed to contain the major species of CO, $H_2,\;CO_2$, and $N_2$ and the minor species of $CH_4$ and $NH_3$. Through thermochemical analysis on the combustion of the synthetic gas, the flame temperature, major and minor species of exhaust gas, and thermal and fuel NOx emissions were computed. In addition, the effects of the $CH_4$ and the $NH_3$ components in syngas fuel on combustion and NOx emission were investigated. Based on the computed results on the synthetic gases, basic direction and guidelines were provided fur the low NOx design of gas turbine combustor.

  • Next to carbon dioxide, methane is the second largest contributor to global warming among anthropogenic greenhouse gases. Methane is emitted into the atmosphere from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Natural sources include wetlands, termites, wildries, ocean and freshwater. Anthropogenic sources include landfill, natural gas and oil production, and agriculture. These manmade sources account for about 70% of total global methane emissions; and among these, landfill accounts for approximately 10% of total manmade emissions. Solid waste landfills produce methane as bacteria decompose organic wastes under anaerobic conditions. Methane accounts for approximately 45 to 50 percent of landfill gas, while carbon dioxide and small quantities of other gases comprise the remaining to 50 to 55 percent. Using the closed enclosure technique, surface emission fluxes of methane from the selected landfill sites were measured. These data were used to estimate national methane emission rate from domestic landfills. During the three different periods, flux experiments were conducted at the sites from June 30 through December 26, 1999. The chamber technique employed for these experiments was validated in situ. Samples were collected directly by on-site flux chamber and analyzed for the variation of methane concentration by gas chromatography equipped with FID. Surface emission rates of methane were found out to vary with space and time. Significant seasonal variation was observed during the experimental period. Methane emission rates were estimated to be 64.5$\pm$54.5mgCH$_4$/$m^2$/hr from Kimpo landifll site. 357.4$\pm$68.9mgCH$_4$/$m^2$/hr and 8.1$\pm$12.4mgCH$_4$/$m^2$/hr at KwanJu(managed and unmanaged), 472.7$\pm$1056mgCH$_4$/$m^2$/hr at JonJu, and 482.4$\pm$1140 mgCH$_4$/$m^2$/hr at KunSan. These measurement data were used for the extrapolation of national methane emission rate based on 1997 national solid waste data. The results were compared to those derived by theoretical first decay model suggested by IPCC guidelines.

  • Gas explosion accidents are steadily being issued due to increased gas consumption in Korea and foreign countries. To analyze the effects of these gas explosions, a TNT equivalent method is used. In this study, the TNT equivalent was calculated in the event of an explosion due to the volume content in the air of CO, CH4 and C2H4, the typical flammable gases emitted by coal. Also, the peak overpressure and impulse variation with the distance from explosion point were compared and analyzed by gas using the calculated equivalent value of TNT. The upper limit of the TNT equivalent for the three mixed gases is up to five times larger than the other gases mixture. In addition, the peak overpressure and impulse, which are factors of the TNT characteristic curve, are also increasing as the number of gases increases.

  • Landfill gas (LFG) emissions from a given amount of landfill waste depend on the carbon flows in the waste. The objective of this study was to more accurately estimate the first-order decay parameters through methane (CH4) and carbon flow balances based on the analysis of a full-scale landfill with long-term data and detailed field records on LFG and leachate. The carbon storage factor for the case-study landfill was 0.055 g-degradable organic carbon (DOC) stored per g-wet waste and the amounts of DOC lost with the leachate were less than 1.3%. The appropriate CH4 generation rate constant (k) for bulk waste was 0.24 y-1. The the CH4 generation potential (L0) values ranged 33.7-46.7 m3-CH4 Mg-1, based on the fraction of DOC that can decompose (DOCf) value of 0.40. Results show that CH4 and carbon flow balance methods can be used to estimate model parameters appropriately and to predict long-term carbon emissions from landfills.

  • Diamond-like carbon(DLC) films were synthesized using the rf-plasma CVD technique with the addition of small amounts of nitrogen and oxygen to a gas mixture of $CH_4$ and $H_2$. The gas flow ratio of $CH_4$ to $H_2$ was 2.4:1, and 3% , 13.6% of nitrogen were added to the gas mixture of $CH_4$ and $H_2$ for the deposition of DLC films. The film stress tended to decrease as the nitrogen concentration increased from 3% to 13.6%, probably due to the decrease of the number of the interlink between carbon atoms. The residual stress tended to slightly decrease when 3% of oxygen was added. Scratch tests were performed to investigate the adhesion between the DLC films and the Ti intelayer after pretreating the TiN surface with direct hydrogen plasma. The adhesion was enhanced by adding nitrogen and oxygen to the $CH_4$ and $H_2$ gas mixture. The adhesion for the 3% nitrogen addition was better than that for the 13.6% nitrogen addition. The Vicker's hardness of the DLC films was measured to be 1100Hv.

  • Rice paddy cultivation is one of the major sources in methane (CH4) emission of which accurate assessment would be a prerequisite for agricultural greenhouse gas management. Biomass treatment in paddy fields is an important factor that affects CH4 emissions and thus needs to be taken into account. The objectives of this study were to apply drone images to investigate organic matter practices and to incorporate into the estimation of CH4 emissions from paddy fields. Three study areas were selected by one from each of the three different regions of Yeongnam, Honam and Jungbu, which are the most active region in paddy cultivation. The eBee drone was used to take images of the study sites twice a year; Jul mid-season for identifying rice cultivation area; Jan for investigating rice straw management and winter crop cultivation. Based on biomass management practices, different emissions factors were assigned on an individual paddy field and CH4 emmisions were estimated by multiplying respective areas. The ratios of rice straw application and winter crop cultivation were 1.4% and 37.2% in Hapcheon, 1.3% and 19.8% in Gimje, and 0.0% and 0.5% in Dangjin, respectively. The CH4 emissions estimates for respective sites were 0.40 ton CH4/year/ha, 0.34 ton CH4/year/ha, and 0.29 ton CH4/year/ha. On average, estimated CH4 emissions of this study were 28.5% less than the current Tier 2 CH4 emission estimation method.

  • The growth behavior of $CH_4$ and $SF_6$ mixture gas hydrate has been investigated by a combined approach of Raman spectroscopy and molecular modeling. Raman spectroscopy results presented that when $CH_4$ is used only, $CH_4$ guest molecule is inserted first into the large cavity of the host structure built by $H_2O$ molecules and then into the small cavity to stabilize the whole gas hydrate structure. In the other hand, when $SF_6$ is mixed together, $SF_6$ is favored over (or competing with) $CH_4$ in being inserted into the large cavity and the small cavity still prefers $CH_4$ insertion. The calculations of binding energies clearly supported this. While $SF_6$ has a binding energy of -26.9 kcal/mol a little lower than -24.2 kcal/mol of $CH_4$ in the large cavity, $SF_6$ and $CH_4$ has 1.2 kcal/mol and -22.0 kcal/mol, respectively, in the small cavity. It indicates that the sizable $SF_6$ is not preferred in the small cavity but has a relative energetic advantage over $CH_4$ in the large cavity.

  • In this study, CO2 separation experiment was performed on a CH4/CO2 mixed gas using a ceramic hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC). In order to fabricate high-performance HFMC, experiments were conducted to manufacture high-permeability hollow fiber membranes, and the prepared hollow fiber membranes were evaluated through N2 gas permeation experiments. HFMC for CH4/CO2 mixed gas separation was manufactured using the manufactured high-permeability hollow fiber membrane. In the experiment, mixed gas of CH4/CO2 (34.5% CO2, CH4 balance) and monoetanolamine (MEA) was used, and the effect of CO2 removal efficiency on the flow rate of the absorbent was evaluated. The CO2 removal efficiency increased as the liquid flow rate increased, and the CO2 absorption flux also increased with the liquid flow rate.
