  • The squash strength and design strength are smaller than the experimental strength of square shaped concrete-filled steel tubular columns in a short concentrically loaded column. This study presents an evaluation procedure accounting for the confining effect of concrete. For the purpose of evaluating a confining effect of concrete, the 3D finite element method was used. The influence of parameters, width-thickness ratios, strength of the concrete and the yield strength of the steel, were examined. The suggested evaluation procedure that assembled three parameters was compared with previous experimental results. Also, the tendency of the confining effect of concrete was examined in the three types of load application.

  • In this paper a systematic numerical analysis is performed to obtain the hysteresis behavior of partially restrained top and seat angle connections subjected to cyclic loading. This connection includes superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) angles and rods in order to secure the recentering capacities as well as proper energy dissipation effects of a CFT composite frame. The three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models are constructed to investigate the rotational stiffness, bending moment capacity and failure modes. A wide scope of additional structural behaviors explain the different influences of the connection's parameters, such as the various thickness of connection angles and the gage distance of steel and SMA rods.

  • Prefabrication technologies are making bridge construction safer and less disruptive to the environment and traveling public, making bridge designs more constructible and, improving the quality and durability by shifting site work to a more controllable environment. Modular bridge substructures with concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) piers and composite pier caps were suggested to realize accelerated bridge construction. The precast segmental pier cap consists of a composite pier table and precast prestressed segments on the table. The pier table has embedded steel section to mitigate stress concentration at the connection by small tubes. Each bridge pier has four or six CFT columns which connect to the pier cap. Shear strength of the pier cap was obtained by extending vertical reinforcing bars from the table to the precast segment. Transverse prestressing was introduced to control tensile stresses by service loadings. Structural performance of the proposed modular system was evaluated by static tests. Design requirements of the composite pier cap were satisfied by continuous reinforcing bars and prestressing tendons. Standardized modular substructures can be effectively utilized for the fast replacement or construction of bridges.

  • The strength of steel material in a concrete filled steel tube (CFT) is reduced in fire, but the filled interior concrete structurally ensures the fire resistance due to its high thermal capacity. More, the contractibility of CFT is excellent since it can be constructed without form work. This research analyzed the interior concrete strength and deformation characteristics, which are the influence factors of the fire resistance of CFT, in proportion to the axial load ratio. The fire resistance performance according to changes of the axial load ratio showed great fluctuation. As $280{\times}280{\times}6$ CFT columns with the concrete strengths of 24 MPa and 40 MPa and the axial load ratios of 0.9, 0.6, and 0.2 in accordance with KS F 2257-1 and 7 were heated with loading to examine the fire resistance performance, the 24 MPa concrete exhibited the fire resistance time as 27, 113, and 180 minutes for the axial load ratios, 0.9, 0.6, and 0.2 respectively. In case of 40 MPa concrete, the fire resistance time were turned out to be 19 and 28 minutes for the axial load ratios, 0.9 and 0.6 respectively. The results of 40 MPa concrete showed the much lower fire resistance performance when comparing with those of 24 MPa concrete. The fire resistance performance was not increased significantly when the axial load ratio was reduced. Therefore, the deceased fire resistance performance of high strength concrete is assumed to be caused by the internal pressure increase upon the heat application.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the axial-flexural load-carrying capacity of concrete-encased and-filled steel tube (CEFT) columns. To restrain local buckling of longitudinal bars and to prevent premature failure of the thin concrete encasement, the use of U-cross ties was proposed. Five eccentrically loaded columns were tested by monotonic compression. The test parameters were axial-load eccentricity, spacing of ties, and the use of concrete encasement. Although early cracking occurred in the thin concrete encasement, the maximum axial loads of the CEFT specimens generally agreed with the strengths predicted considering the full contribution of the concrete encasement. Further, due to the effect of the circular steel tube, the CEFT columns exhibited significant ductility. The applicability of current design codes to the CEFT columns was evaluated in terms of axial-flexural strength and flexural stiffness.

  • Constructions of buildings downtown are increasing as much as ever with a strong demand. Top-Down Method is suitable for its advantage in minimizing its disturbance to the neighborhood. Pre-founded when applied to CFT Column on-site welded is required for splicing. To complement the welded built-up square composite Column was developed. Top-down process will be pouring concrete in accordance with a step-by-step process. Thus, Pre-founded Column and cover concrete to determine the stress condition. Therefore, Concrete filled steel square tubular columns encased with precast concrete were studied. Five Centrally loaded Columns were tested to investigate the axial load carrying capacity. we analyzed the strength and behavior of CET Column by Loading conditions and concrete strength, thickness of cover concrete through structure experiments.

  • The diaphragm used for CFT columns has a small amount of steel to be used, but has a disadvantage that welding is difficult and openings are required because the steel tube and four sides must be welded. The improved diaphragm to be examined in this study was cut into four corners by cutting the center hole for concrete filling. In the improved diaphragm, the width of the center hole is the same as that of the previous diaphragm, but the width of the diaphragm contacting the steel tube is reduced, thereby reducing the welding length by about 70% compared to the previous diaphragm. The in-plane strain of each specimen was analyzed when the same load was applied to the interior diaphragm through a simple tensile test. Using the general FEM program(ANSYS 19.2), the analysis was performed under the same conditions as the actual simple tensile test, and the load transfer between the improved diaphragm and the previous diaphragm was compared. When the width of the diaphragm is equal to or smaller than the flange width, stress is concentrated from the end of the diaphragm, and when the flange width is larger, stress is concentrated at the center.

  • The goal of this paper is to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of concrete-filled tubular column to H-beam connection with external T stiffener through the elasto-plastic finite element method and to offer basic data for the design of T stiffener. For the accuracy, analysis results are compared with experimental results. It makes use of several stress and strain indices to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of connection. An alternative plan that decreases the stress concentration of beam flange to horizontal stiffener connection is proposed through the elasto-plastic finite element method.

  • This paper is to study the effect of longitudinal reinforcement ratios and axial deformation on the frame analysis in reinforced concrete(RC) columns and to investigate the effect of confined concrete core, the length-width ratio and longitudinal steel ratios on frame analysis in Concrete-Filled steel Tubular(CFT) columns. An equation if derived to evaluate the modulus of elasticity for core concrete. The 34 reference data have been collected for the purpose and are processed by the mean of a multiple regression analysis technique. The equation and longitudinal reinforcement ratios was applied to RC columns for structural analysis. Then, the difference of beam moment was identified. In general, the results of analysis was indicated reasonable differences in beam moment, in case of longitudinal reinforcement ratios applied to RC columns when compared with the plain concrete columns. In CFT columns the equation was also applied in order to the effect of confined concrete core on structural analysis. Beam moment was increased as volumetric ratio of lateral steel was decreased. The effect of longitudinal steel ratios was investigated in CFT columns and was confirmed beam moment variety. The result was appeared reasonable difference in beam moment as longitudinal steel was increased.
