The object of this paper is to investigate collapse characteristics of CF/Epoxy(Carbon Fiber/Epoxy resin) composite tubes on the change of interlaminar number and fiber orientation angle of outer and to evaluate reappearance of collapse characteristics on the change of tension strength of fibers under static and impact axial compression loads. When a CF/Epoxy composite tube is mushed, static/impact energy is consumed by friction between the loading plate and the splayed fiends of the tube, by fracture of the fibers, matrix and their interface. In general, CF/Epoxy tube with 6 interlaminar number(C-type) absorbed more energy than other tubes(A, B, D-types). The maximum collapse load seemed to increase as the interlaminar number of such tubes increases. The collapse mode depended upon orientation angle of outer of CF/Epoxy tubes and loading status(static/impact). Typical collapse modes of CF/Epoxy tubes are wedge collapse mode, splaying collapse mode and fragmentation collapse mode. The wedge collapse mode was shorn in case of CF/Epoxy tubes with 0$^{\circ}$ orientation angle of outer under static and impact loadings. The splaying collapse mode was shown in only case of CF/Epoxy tubes with 90$^{\circ}$ orientation angie or outer under static loadings, however in impact tests those were collapsed in fragmentation mode. So that CF/Epoxy tube with 6 interlaminar number and 90$^{\circ}$ outer orientation angle presented to the optimal collapse characteristics.

This study aims to examine an effect of stacking sequence and curvature on the penetration characteristic of a composite laminated shell. For the purpose, we manufactured specimens with different stacking sequences and curvatures, and conducted a penetration test using an air-gun. To examine an influence according to stacking sequence, as flat plate and curvature specimen had more plies, their critical penetration energy was higher, Critical penetration energies of specimen A and C with less interfaces somewhat higher than those of B and D with more interfaces. The reason that with less interfaces, critical penetration energy was higher is pre-impact bending stiffness of composite laminated shell with less interfaces was lower than that of laminated shell with more interfaces, but bending stiffness after impact was higher. And it is because interface, the weakest part of the composite laminated shell, was influenced by transverse impact. As curvature increases, critical penetration energy increases linearly. It is because as curvature increases, resistance to in-plane deformation as well as bending deformation increases, which need higher critical penetration energy. Patterns of cracks caused by penetration of composite laminated shells include interlaminar crack, intralaminar crack, and laminar fracture. A 0$^{\circ}$ply laminar had a matrix crack, a 90$^{\circ}$ply laminar had intralaminar crack and laminar fracture, and interface between 0$^{\circ}$and 90$^{\circ}$laminar had a interlaminar crack. We examined crack length and delamination area through a penetration test. For the specimen A and C with 2 interface, the longest circumferential direction crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the first interface from the impact point. For the specimen B and D with 4 interface, the longest crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the third interface from the impact point.

A correlation between fatigue damage and acousto-ultrasonic (AU) parameters has been obtained from signals acquired during fatigue loading of the single-lap joints of a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates and A16061 plate. The correlation showed an analogy to those representing the stiffness reduction $(E/E_0)$ of polymer matrix composites by the accumulation of fatigue damage. This has been attributed to the transmission characteristics of acoustic wave energy through bonded joints with delamination-type defects and their influence on the change of spectral content of AU signals. Another correlation between fatigue cycles and the spectral magnitude of acoustic emission (AE) signals has also been found during the final stage of fatigue loading. Both AU and AE can be applied almost in real-time to monitor the evolution of damage during fatigue loading.
The present paper focuses on experimental verification of the ply-by-ply basis inelastic analysis of multidirectional laminates. First of all, rate dependence of the tensile behavior of balanced symmetric cross-ply T800H/epoxy laminates with a $[0/90]_{3S}$ lay-up under off-axis loading conditions at $100^{\circ}C$ is examined. Uniaxial tension tests are performed on plain coupon specimens with various fiber orientations $[{\theta}/(90-{\theta})]_{3S}$ ($\theta$ = 0, 5, 15, 45 and $90^{\circ}C$) at two different strain rates (1.0 and 0.01%/min). The off-axis stress.strain curves exhibit marked nonlinearity for all the off-axis fiber orientations except for the on-axis fiber orientations $\theta$ = 0 and $90^{\circ}$, regardless of the strain rates. Strain rate has significant influences not only on the off-axis flow stress in the regime of nonlinear response but also on the apparent off-axis elastic modulus in the regime of initial linear response. A macromechanical constitutive model based on a ply viscoplasticity model and the classical laminated plate theory is applied to predictions of the rate-dependent off-axis nonlinear behavior of the cross-ply CFRP laminate. The material constants involved by the ply viscoplasticity model are identified on the basis of the experimental results on the unidirectional laminate of the same carbon/epoxy system. It is demonstrated that good agreements between the predicted and observed results are obtained by taking account of the fiber rotation induced by deformation as well as the rate dependence of the initial Young's moduli.
The objective of this study is to improve the survivability and reliability of the FBG sensor network in the structural health monitoring (SHM) system. Therefore, a model reconstruction soft computing recognition algorithm based on support vector regression (SVR) is proposed to achieve the high reliability of the FBG sensor network, and the grid search algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of SVR model. Furthermore, in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model reconstruction algorithm, a SHM system based on an eight-point fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor network is designed to monitor the foreign-object low velocity impact of a CFRP composite plate. Simultaneously, some sensors data are neglected to simulate different kinds of FBG sensor network failure modes, the predicting results are compared with non-reconstruction for the same failure mode. The comparative results indicate that the performance of the model reconstruction recognition algorithm based on SVR has more excellence than that of non-reconstruction, and the model reconstruction algorithm almost keeps the consistent predicting accuracy when no sensor, one sensor and two sensors are invalid in the FBG sensor network, thus the reliability is improved when there are FBG sensors are invalid in the structural health monitoring system.
Through the use of finite element analysis and acoustic emission techniques we have evaluated the interfacial failure of a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) repair patch on a notched aluminum substrate. The repair of cracks is a very common and widely used practice in the aeronautics field to extend the life of cracked sheet metal panels. The process consists of adhesively bonding a patch that encompasses the notched site to provide additional strength, thereby increasing life and avoiding costly replacements. The mechanical strength of the bonded joint relies mainly on the bonding of the adhesive to the plate and patch stiffness. Stress concentrations at crack tips promote disbonding of the composite patch from the substrate, consequently reducing the bonded area, which makes this a critical aspect of repair effectiveness. In this paper we examine patch disbonding by calculating the influence of notch tip stress on disbond area and verify computational results with acoustic emission (AE) measurements obtained from specimens subjected to uniaxial tension. The FE results showed that disbonding first occurs between the patch and the substrate close to free edge of the patch followed by failure around the tip of the notch, both highest stress regions. Experimental results revealed that cement adhesion at the aluminum interface was the limiting factor in patch performance. The patch did not appear to strengthen the aluminum substrate when measured by stress-strain due to early stage disbonding. Analysis of the AE signals provided insight to the disbond locations and progression at the metal-adhesive interface. Crack growth from the notch in the aluminum was not observed until the stress reached a critical level, an instant before final fracture, which was unaffected by the patch due to early stage disbonding. The FE model was further utilized to study the effects of patch fiber orientation and increased adhesive strength. The model revealed that the effectiveness of patch repairs is strongly dependent upon the combined interactions of adhesive bond strength and fiber orientation.

Steel-concrete composite beam with profiled steel sheet has gained its popularity in the last two decades. Due to the ageing of these structures, retrofitting in terms of flexural strength is necessary to ensure that the aged structures can carry the increased traffic load throughout their design life. The steel ribs, which presented in the profiled steel deck, limit the use of shear connectors. This leads to a poor degree of composite action between the concrete slab and steel beam compared to the solid slab situation. As a result, the shear connectors that connects the slab and beam will be subjected to higher shear stress which may also require strengthening to increase the load carrying capacity of an existing composite structure. While most of the available studies focus on the strengthening of longitudinal shear and flexural strength separately, the present work investigates the effect of both flexural and longitudinal shear strengthening of steel-concrete composite beam with composite slab in terms of failure modes, ultimate load carrying capacity, ductility, end-slip, strain profile and interface differential strain. The flexural strengthening was conducted using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) or steel plate on the soffit of the steel I-beam, while longitudinal shear capacity was enhanced using post-installed high strength bolts. Moreover, a combination of both the longitudinal shear and flexural strengthening techniques was also implemented (hybrid strengthening). It is concluded that hybrid strengthening improved the ultimate load carrying capacity and reduce slip and interface differential strain that lead to improved composite action. However, hybrid strengthening resulted in brittle failure mode that decreased ductility of the beam.
Airframe structure development of the 35 kg class 'Disaster and Public Safety Multicopter' UAV is described in this paper. To reduce the airframe weight, T-700 grade CFRP composite material was used, and the fuselage was designed with the semi-monocoque structure and plate installed with the control and communication devices designed in a sandwich structure. The specimen tests for the laminated plate and pipe were conducted to verify the strength and stiffness of the designed parts. The stacking sequence of composite materials was determined by the static strength and vibration analysis, and landing gear strut was designed by the nonlinear analysis with decent speed and ground clearance requirements. The static strength test was performed to evaluate the structural integrity and to verify the landing gear behavior.
An impact localization for a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite plate was performed using the multiplexed fiber bragg grating (FBG) sensors and the error-outlier based impact localization algorithm. We found that the optimal impact localization with the maximum error of 31.82 mm and the averaged error of 6.31 mm are obtained when the error threshold (ET) and constant level (CL) are 0.3 nm and 110, respectively. Moreover, the detailed process of impact localization under certain optimal parameters and the relevant results were thoroughly investigated. We conclude that the multiplexed FBG sensors and the error-outlier based impact localization algorithm are suitable for an impact localization on composite structures, and expect that they can be utilized for various structural health monitoring (SHM) in the future.
The elastic waves in a plate are dispersive waves due to the characteristics of Lamb waves. However, S0 symmetric mode is less dispersive in the frequency region below the first cut-off frequency. The wave Propagation velocities vary with the direction in anisotropic plates such as Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Plates. The wave vector direction and energy flow vector direction are same in isotropic plates. However, the wave vector direction same as the phase velocity direction is not in accordance with the energy flow direction same as the group velocity direction in anisotropic plates. In this study. the dispersion curves or the phase velocity from anti-symmetric and symmetric Lamb wave dispersion equation are calculated for unidirectional laminated composite plate. Slowness surface is sketched using phase velocity under the first cut-off frequency. The direction and magnitude of group velocity are corrected with this slowness surface. The measured group velocities are in good agreement with the corrected group velocity curve except near the fiber direction zone which is called the cusp region.
