Study on Dispersion Characteristics for Fire Scenarios in an Urban Area Using a CFD-WRF Coupled Model (CFD-WRF 접합 모델을 이용한 도시 지역 화재 시나리오별 확산 특성 연구)

  • The characteristics of flow and pollutant dispersion for fire scenarios in an urban area are numerically investigated. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model coupled to a mesoscale weather research and forecasting (WRF) model is used in this study. In order to more accurately represent the effect of topography and buildings, the geographic information system (GIS) data is used as an input data of the CFD model. Considering prevailing wind, firing time, and firing points, four fire scenarios are setup in April 2008 when fire events occurred most frequently in recent five years. It is shown that the building configuration mainly determines wind speed and direction in the urban area. The pollutant dispersion patterns are different for each fire scenario, because of the influence of the detailed flow. The pollutant concentration is high in the horse-shoe vortex and recirculation zones (caused by buildings) close to the fire point. It thus means that the potential damage areas are different for each fire scenario due to the different flow and dispersion patterns. These results suggest that the accurate understanding of the urban flow is important to assess the effect of the pollutant dispersion caused by fire in an urban area. The present study also demonstrates that CFD model can be useful for the assessment of urban environment.

Optimal Design of Impeller according to Blade Shape Variation Using CFD Simulation (CFD를 이용한 블레이드 형상 변화에 따른 블로워 임펠러 최적설계)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the blade shape on the impeller performance, for design optimizing of the high airflow impeller. First, the quantity, angle, and length of blades, which are considered to have a large influence on the impeller performance, were selected as design variables. Then, 27 cases of impeller shapes were selected according to the design of experiment (DOE). To predict the conduct of the blower based on the selected impeller shape, flow analysis was performed using the immersed solid method of ANSYS CFX. In the CFD results, the highest airflow was expected in the impeller having a combination of 50 EA, $6^{\circ}$ and 5 mm. Finally, a blower with the original impeller shape and the optimized impeller shape was fabricated using a 3D printer, and the analysis tendency and experimental tendency were verified through experiments.

An Experimental Study on the Cause of Signal Inhomogeneity for Magnetic Resonance Angiography Using Phantom Model of Anterior Communicating(A-com) Artery (전교통동맥 모형을 이용한 자기공명혈관촬영술의 신호 불균일에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Aneurysm-mimicking findings were frequently visualized due to hemodynamical causes of dephasing effects around area of A-com artery during magnetic resonance angiography(MRA) and these kind of phenomena have not been clearly known yet. We investigated the hemodynamical patterns of dephasing effect around area of the A-com artery that might be a cause of false intracranial aneurysms on MRA. For experimental study, We used hand-made silicon phantoms of the asymmetric A-com artery as like a bifurcation configuration. In a closed circulatory system with UHDC computer driven cardiac pump system. MRA and fast digital subfraction angiography(DSA) involved the use of these phantoms. Flow patterns were evaluated with axial and coronal imaging of MRA(2D-TOF, 3D-TOF) and DSA of Phantoms constructed from an automated closed-type circulatory system filled with glycerol solution [circulation fluid(glycerol:water = 1:1.4)]. These findings were then compared with those obtained from computational fluid dynamic(CFD) for inter-experimental correlation study. Imaging findings of MRA, DSA and CFD on inflow zone according to the following: a) MRA demonstrated high signal intensity zone as inflow zone on silicon phantom; b) Patterns of DSA were well matched with MRA on trajectory of inflow zone; and c) CFD were well matched with MRA on the pattern of main flow. Imaging findings of MRA. DSA and CFD on turbulent flow zone according to the following: a) MRA demonstrated hyposignal intensity zone at shoulder and axillar zone of main inflow; b) DSA delineated prominent vortex flow at the same area. The hemodynamical causes of signal defect, which could Induce the false aneurysm on MRA, turned out to be dephasing effects at axilla area of bifurcation from turbulent flow as the results of MRA, DSA and CFD.

Performance Analysis by CFD and Aerodynamic Design of 100kW Class Radial Turbine Using Waste Heat from Ship (선박 폐열을 이용한 100kW급 구심터빈 공력설계 및 CFD에 의한 성능해석)

  • The purpose of this study is to secure the design data for the optimization of the radial turbine and heat cycle system, by using the CFD analysis technique and the design of 100kW class radial turbine applicable to waste heat recovery generation system for ship. Radial turbine was comprised of scroll casing, vane nozzle with 18 blades and rotor with 13 blades, and analysis grid was used to about 2.3 million. Mass flow rate and rotational speed was 0.5kg/s, 75,0000rpm, respectively. Eight kinds of inlet pressure was set between 195 and 620kPa. As the flow accelerated through the nozzle passage to the throat, the pressure level at the pressure and suction sides becomed similar to about Mach number of 0.35. When the inlet temperature and pressure was $250^{\circ}C$, 352kPa respectively, the isentropic efficiency and mechanical power showed the analysis results of 74% and 108kW.

  • The safe operation of high pressure pipe line systems is of significant importance. Leaks due to faulty operation from the pipelines can lead to considerable product losses and to exposure of community to dangerous gases. There are several leak detection methods, which have been recently suggested on pipeline network. The negative pressure wave detection technology, which has advantages of short time detection availability, accurate leaking location estimate capability and cost effective, is concentrated in this study. Theoretical analysis of the flow characteristics for leaking through a hole on the pipe wall has been performed by using CFD++, commercial CFD package. The results of 3-dimensional analysis near leaking hole confirm the occurrence of negative pressure wave and verify the characteristics of propagation of the wave which travels with speed equal to the speed of sound in the pipeline contents. For the application of long pipe line system. The method of 1-dimensional analysis has been suggested and verified with results of CFD++.

  • This paper has been conducted to estimate cooling capacity of the dehumidification tower using hot water from a solar water heating system as a energy source of regeneration process when the dehumidification and drying system is applied to room cooling. A solar water heating system was operated and indoor temperature distributions were simulated according to weather conditions when the concerned solution was used to dehumidify room air in the dehumidification tower. Through this simulation researches we found th following results ; It was found that air velocity through supply and return diffusers should be controlled because it can cause uncomfort in dwelling area. It was found that in the sunny morning temperatures of dwelling area 1 and 2 are higher than those of dwelling area 3 and 4. In this research all the calculation results of heating and cooling system supported by solar water heater have confirmed that its cooling capacity could not reach PMV 0, thermal comfort.

  • Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) has low operating temperature and high efficiency. And PEMFC consists of many components as bipolar plate, gas diffusion layer, membrane etc.. Flow-field in bipolar plate roles path for transporting reactants to membrane. Therefore a design of flow-field has an effect on PEMFC's performance. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed for comparing mixed multiple serpentine (MMS) flow-field and multiple serpentine (MS) flow-field. And we studied an effect according to change mixing region design in MMS flow-field. Finally the applicability of results is verified by performing CFD simulation about fixed MMS flow-field which is combined good designs.

  • Conveyor-type transporters have been widely used as a typical delivery system of semi-conductor, FPD and other IT-related products. However, as the IT-product is getting larger in size and higher in resolution, several problems are caused by mechanical contacts between the transporter and target object. In this context, recently, lots of efforts are being devoted for development of various contact-free handling systems to get rid of deffets and oil contaminations. The objectives of this paper are to characterize suspension mechanisms and to investigate air flow effects on air levitation transport system. For this purpose, a series of CFD analyses were carried out and the simulation data showed a good agreement with the corresponding experimental ones. It is anticipated that the promising result can be used as a basis for concept design of the transport system.
