This paper is a basic study on volatile organic compounds(VOC) recovery system in a crude oil carrier. VOC is easily evaporated in cargo tankers during loading and transportation of crude oil, causes serious environmental contamination and a huge economic loss. An ejector system is designed to mix VOC gas into crude oil flow to reduce VOC concentration. Detail two-phase flow inside the ejector is simulated using a commercial CFD code. To verify the numerical prediction, a scale-down experiment is conducted. Instead of crude oil and VOC, water and air are used as the working fluids. Flow characteristics and main parameters are obtained by two-phase flow visualization and PIV measurements. Air volume flow rate induced by the ejector is compared with respect to the volume flow rate of water using experimental and numerical results. Overall performance of the two-phase ejector predicted by the CFD simulation agrees well with that of the experiment.

Steam jets ejected from a rupture zone of high energy pipes may cause damage to adjacent structures. This event could lead to more serious accidents in nuclear power plants. Therefore, to prevent serious accidents, high energy pipes of nuclear power plants are designed according to the ANSI / ANS 58.2 technical standard. However, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) has recently pointed out non-conservatism in existing high energy pipe fracture evaluation methods, and required the assessment of the unsteady load of the jet caused by a potential feedback mechanism as well as the impact range of steam jet, the jet impact loads and the blast wave effects at the initial breakage stage. The potential feedback mechanism refers to a phenomenon in which a vortex formed by impingement jets amplifies vortex itself and induces jet vibration in a shear layer. In this study, CFD methodology using the LES turbulence model is established and numerical analysis is carried out to evaluate the dynamic behavior of impingement jets and the potential feedback mechanism during jet impingement. Obtained results have been compared with an empirical correlation and experiment.

A numerical investigation of stage separation behavior of a two-body vehicle focusing on its flow characteristics is carried out. For this simulation, the separation of a booster from a vehicle is modeled using a chimera grid system and calculated with commercial code, $CFD-FASTRAN^{TM}$. Consideration of spring force, gravity and relative acceleration of a booster is the essential factor of a realistic simulation. In this study, it is validated that the booster separation time decreases with an increase in flight Mach number and angle of attack. In view of results thus far achieved, it is expected that the dynamics modeling and boundary condition set-up applied in this study will be useful for estimating safe stage separation and event sequencing of flight tests.

Due to its accuracy and efficiency, reduced kinetic mechanism of diesel surrogate is widely used as fuel model when applying 3-D diesel engine simulation. But for the well-developed prediction of diesel surrogate reduced kinetic mechanism, it is important to know some meaningful factors which affect to ignition delay time. Meanwhile, ignition delay time consists of two parts. One is the chemical ignition delay time related with the chemical reaction, and the other is the physical ignition delay time which is affected by physical behavior of the fuel droplet. Especially for chemical ignition delay time, chemical properties of each fuel were studied for a long time, but researches on their mixtures have not been done widely. So it is necessary to understand the chemical characteristics of their mixtures for more precise and detailed modeling of surrogate diesel oil. And it shows same ignition trend of paraffin mixture with those of single component, and shorter ignition delay at low/high initial temperature when mixing paraffin and toluene.

A numerical analysis for the performance of compound gyroplane in forward flight was performed. TSM(Transient Simulation Method) was used to analyze the performance of autorotating rotor. CFD was conducted for the fuselages to recognize the variation of aerodynamic performance according to flight speed. At given conditions; airspeed, shaft angle and collective pitch, the quasi-static states of autorotation were determined and the variation of rotor performance was observed. Performance analysis results showed that the effect of aerodynamic characteristics in accordance with the shape of fuselage is so important that the streamlined fuselage is essential to fly fast. Forward flight speed limit is dependent on the autorotation performance of rotor.

Computational simulations of adsorption columns were carried out to investigate the removal characteristics of VOCs from a laundry shop. n-Decane was selected as the representative component among the VOCs emitted, and the activity of the adsorbents, such as activated carbon, was evaluated using commercial CFD code. The mathematical framework was composed of continuity and Navier-stokes equations, and the simulation was performed using the Matlab program. The adsorption isotherms of LDF, Freundlich, and Langmuir were evaluated, and the adsorption amount of the adsorption isotherms with the adsorption parameter was compared. The simulation was carried out using a particle porosity, dispersion coefficient, particle density, bed diameter, and bed length of 0.79, 42.4 ㎠/min, 485 g/L, 2.0 cm, and 2.5 cm, respectively. The effect of the gas velocity, dispersion coefficient, and voidage on the adsorption amount was compared in the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The simulation was carried out in the velocity range of 50 to 200 cm/min, dispersion coefficient range of 100 to 400 ㎠/min, and particle porosity range of 0.66 to 0.79. The simulation results of activated carbon with benzene coincided with the Langmuir isotherm. Three types of adsorption isotherm were compared under similar conditions, and the simulation results showed the efficient adsorption condition for hydrocarbons.

Flow characteristics analysis and tracer test simulations for the rectangular typed sedimentation basins, which have been operated at D_water treatment plant in Korea, were carried out using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques for design ($15,864m^3/day$) and operation flowrate ($33,333m^3/day$). Also, each efficiency of the sedimentation basin was evaluated by application of the Lagrangin technique on the assumption of the particles flowing into the inlet of the sedimentation basin. From the results of simulation, the mean velocity values for making the flow in the settling basin as a plug flow region were derived as 0.00193 m/s and 0.00417 m/s, respectively. In addition, ${\beta}$ (effective contact factor) values were calculated to be 0.51 and 0.46, and the Morrill Index values were 6.05 and 3.21, respectively for both flowrate conditions.

Fuses are used to protect electric circuits or devices from excess current. Glass-tube fuses are typically used, but problems have arisen due to the mandated switch from conventional solder to lead-free solder. This study used CFD to simulate the phenomenon of molten solder being poured out of a fuse during the soldering process for a fuse cap and fuse element. In addition, a method is proposed to prevent solder from overflowing, and its effectiveness was verified based on the analysis results. The results show that a sufficient increase of the temperature inside the glass tube before soldering and gravity can help to prevent the solder from overflowing.
Recently, pressure grouting is widely being used in construction site for strength improvement of ground and water proof, reinforcement and so on. It is necessarily required to estimate an appropriate injection pressure and injection time for economical and reasonable construction in the site through the size and shape of the hardened grout measured according to ground condition. However, sampling for the hardened grout is time-consuming and needs high cost on preliminary test in the site. The system which could predict the size and shape of the hardened grout does not exist until now. Thus, numerical method based on VOF method and porous model was used for the calibration chamber injection test with injection pressure (50 kPa, 100 kPa, 150 kPa) in this study. The results indicate that the numerical technique based on VOF method and porous model among CFD analysis is expected to be a basic study for the prediction of the behavior and solidification of pressure grouting.
